GAH! FIGS! *nom nom nom*
Do you think I could grow one potted in my kind of dark midwest apartment?
I don't see where I can grow them..only links to the scientific facts..or am i wrong.
There are lots of Fruit plants that grow Inside in a container... For instance. There is an avacado tree that gives fruit all year long and is a potted plant...
Your best bet to find out about the plants that are good for your area and use is to contact the folks at www.TopTropicals.com and get there advise... as for me I live in New Orleans so its pretty easy to grow stuff here...
You may have to search a bit to find out more about the plants you are interested in but look around as there are loads of info on most of the plants that these folks sell...
off topic...
It seems that the new format here at GoneRaw no longer allows you to edit your own post.... am I wrong???
There seem to be nothing about you on your profile, so Dewey Fish why don't you tell us about YOU and why you are raw or at least your experiences and longevity with raw....
What tropicals do you enjoy growing???
Hmm, this is fun, I want to grow cherimoyas and durians and sapotes and ice cream beans and oh...the list goes on..how do I get the seeds to plant these things? (I know durian may be very hard lol)
i have five avocado plants and two jack fruit plants in my house, i just planted seeds when i ate fresh fruit.
i don't know i can have fruit someday or not but it is fun to see what the plant looks like, how they grow.
i also have fig, lime, kumquat....haven't harvest any fruit yet but hope someday!
rawnewolreans-
thanks you for the link, i live in michigan so maybe too cold to ship plant to here but in spring i will order some babies! can't wait!
RawChefKid, you really like sapotes? I used to have a sapote, green coconut, mango, banana, pomagrate, papaya and grapes trees in my house in South America. We also had something similar to durian but it is much smaller and softer inside. It is guanabana in Spanish.
Now I live in the UK and the fruits here are really tasteless :-(
Another Tree I have in My Yard is a Japanese Plum Tree... Yummy... I had two of those but Katrina Blew One away... Not Only was it Uprooted but it ended up in my neighbors yard... I planted another one but it take like one to 2 years to produce... Oh Well... Good thing come to those who wait... I hope.... I should mention That one of my fig trees was uprooted as well I just straighten it up and Supported it with rope and Hose pipe and its been producing like a mad man... I think The Uprooting actually Helped its Growth by Loosing the Soil around the Root... Go Figure....
RawNewOrleans, it would indeed appear that at the moment you cannot edit posts. As Ray said on the home page, things will be a little crazy today as they start bringing up the new features and appearance. I would expect this issue to be resolved in the near future.

Spirulina is a blue-green alga found naturally in alkaline, warm-water lakes. Spirulina contains concentrations of nutrients unlike any other single grain, herb, or plant. It has the essential fatty acids gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), linoleic and arachidonic acids; is virtually the only vegetarian source of vitamin B12, which is (needed for healthy red blood cells; and contains significant amounts of iron, protein (60 to 70 percent), essential amino acids, the nucleic acids RNA and DNA, and chlorophyll. http://www.naturalnews.com/008421.html
The blue green algae is my main food besides fruit. It is one of the best things ever! There is a difference between spirulina and the wild version; spirulina is grown in cultures by humans whereas wild blue green algae comes from Klamath Lake. I get all my protein from it; like 70 caps a day, lol.
Legalize Pee! Legalize Pee!
The first time I saw a mango my instinct was to eat the peel... hmm.... I can buy conventional ones though cuz they have a peel so I don't eat peels anymore.
Mango - To Peel Or Not To Peel... That is the Question... The edible mango peel has considerable value as a source of dietary fiber and antioxidant pigments Contained within the peel and pulp are rich contents of polysaccharides as fiber sources, especially starch and pectins
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mangoes
Antioxidants of the peel and pulp include carotenoids, such as the provitamin A compound, beta-carotene, lutein and alpha-carotene polyphenols such as quercetin, kaempferol, gallic acid, caffeic acid, catechins, tannins, and the unique mango xanthone, mangiferin any of which may counteract free radicals in various disease mechanisms as revealed in preliminary research Contents of these phytochemicals and nutrients appear to vary across different mango species Up to 25 different carotenoids have been isolated from mango pulp, the densest content for which was beta-carotene accounting for the yellow-orange pigmentation of most mango species. Peel and leaves also have significant content of polyphenols, including xanthones, mangiferin and gallic acid.
The mango triterpene, lupeol is an effective inhibitor in laboratory models of prostate and skin cancers An extract of mango branch bark called Vimang, isolated by Cuban scientists, contains numerous polyphenols with antioxidant properties in vitro and on blood parameters of elderly humans.
The pigment euxanthin, known as Indian yellow, is often thought to be produced from the urine of cows fed mango leaves; the practice is described as having been outlawed in 1908 due to malnutrition of the cows and possible urushiol poisoning. One author claims these descriptions of the pigment's origin rely on a single anecdotal source and Indian legal records do not mention such a practice being outlawed.
