I have no idea if this would help or not, but I’ve seen a recipe here for hash browns using sweet potato. It calls for a lot of oil, lots of garlic, and is yummy. If I made it again, I wouldn’t use as much oil or garlic, but maybe it would help satisfy your craving.
My bf made a raw hash brown for a raw brunch we through. He used sweet potatoe and olive oil and spices and flax seeds. They were marinated and dehydrated and turned out pretty good. I think what you are craving are the crunch and oil and maybe saltiness?
Yeah, I tried these today… didn’t do the trick, but i think i can improve on it… I’m definitely craving the “fried” not the other stuff… I narrowed that one down today! But, i’m staying strong! I actually bought some white potatoes today (actually they’re baby red’s) and i’m going to try those. I honestly don’t know why we don’t use white potatoes, but i’m going to try it. I think the real potatoe taste might help the fried craving to go away. We’ll see :)

Don’t eat the white potatoes raw! They’ll make you fart like crazy and there can be bad levels of solanin(?) in the green stuff.
I say just get the hashbrowns, or homefries, or french fries, or sweet potato fries or whatever. I used to have wicked potato cravings and would have french fries or sweet potato fries pretty frequently. I did that for a while, then got over it. Now, I don’t really crave potatoes anymore. Sweet potatoes, especially, are great for you, raw or cooked.
Don’t be too hard on yourself!
Carrie6292 – last winter I made this raw recipe using sweet potato. It was good but I think it could be tweaked a bit to make it excellent (I cut way back on the garlic).

I tried making hashbrowns last fall using a regular potato and the results were not edible, but I was still pretty new to raw and using a dehydrator….
Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions! I’m glad i didn’t try to do anything yet with the red potatoes – i think i’ll skip that one now :) I’m over my hashbrown craving… i did cave in and had one. I made sure it was organic and had nothing in it that i couldn’t eat (it was just potatoe, onion and salt). So, that was good :) It did the trick and now i’m okay! I hated giving in, but i’m glad the craving is gone now. Joyce, i tried your recipe and it was good, but just didn’t do the trick for me (it wasnt crispy like a has brown, it was just drier). I also added too much oil, so that wasn’t good for me – my stomach did not appreciate that very much :) Thank you again, everyone!!!
You could always try making something for another person and just eating a couple tablespoons, seeing how you feel, etc.
carrie- I have made raw potato chips using raw yukon gold potatoes and they taste AWESOME! They tasted just like regular potato chips, only they were slightly chewy, but still somewhat crunchy too. There’s nothing wrong with raw potatoes – they are actually considered to be very cleansing. The key is getting them very thin. Here’s what you do:
Using a spiralizer, spiralize raw Yukon Gold potatoes and soak them in water (or vinegar for sea salt vinegar chips) to remove the starches for about an hour. Drain off the vinegar (you can keep it for the next batch if you want) and toss them around in some olive oil and sea salt, pepper, etc, and lay them on teflex sheets. Dehydrate the slices for 12-20 hours and dig in! You’ll love them.
How come my spiralized chips never come out? I’ve tried spiralizing some sweet potatoes and it just doesn’t work out for me! Am i doing something wrong? The end prongs aren’t strong enough – or so it seems – and it just keeps twisting without really grabbing on good. I get a few good chips out of it, but they’re not as thin as they could be and i end up wasting so much of the potato… I’ll have to play around some. Thanks again!!
carrie6292~ Here are a few suggestions that might help…
BTW, is your spirilizer the type that is horizontal or the one that is vertical with a container to catch the threads?
These suggestions might sound a bit complicated, but in practice they take seconds to do. However, if not done, it doesn’t work well. The better one gets at spiralizing, the less precise one has to be because you learn how to compensate and adjust. It’s kinda hard to figure out what you are doing wrong without seeing in person. Now if you could take a vid, we might be able to more precise with the help… :)

Your welcome, and I TOTALLY suggest playing around with the spiralizer! There is one brand, I believe that people say is really good is the Spirooli, you can get it at Natural Zing. Saladacco has a good one too, that’s the one I have and it pumps out ribbons. Works like a charm!
