I can’t wait to hear how that works out.
I expect the pantyhose will melt if boiled. Others have been using paint filter bags. I think you’ll have more success with those.
I thought you could get cheese cloth at a reg. grocery store?I have in the past for making herb bundles?
Paint strainer bags are sturdier than pantyhose and aren’t dyed. I can barely get more than one use out of pantyhose, let alone trying to squeeze the crap out of one. 8)
Thanks everyone I guess Ill go look for a paint strainer bag!
Cheesecloth is only good for one use and it doesn’t hold up for all that squeezing. The nylon nut milk bags or paint strainer bags are the ones to get. They’re sturdy, washable, do the job right and will last for a long time.
Cheesecloth is good for make seed/nut cheese, letting it hang and drain. It leaves a lovely imprint/texture on the outside of the cheese and makes it look authentic.
ive never tried this bag method so dont know if better than this , but i just blend almonds and water . let sit say 15 minutes then strain through a fine mesh metal kitchen strainer .
I used pantyhose to strain juice and I guess I squeezed the ball too hard because it EXPLODED and I had green smoothie all over my kitchen!
I just stared in wonder.
I’d say to cut the hose about 11-15” above the tip toe of the hose. I don’t know why you should boil them, wouldn’t washing them well in hot water work just as well? I’ve heard that they work well as nut milk bags, but haven’t tried it myself…BUT my nutmilk bag is as fine of a mesh as a pantyhose and is as soft as pantyhose (not course).
MOTH, you made me smile!
Smoothielove, I use a paint strainer bag. It works quite well, but I have to tell you that the most succulent, silky smooth milk I have ever made was with a cotton teatowel. It’s a little more wasteful, because the fresh milk soaked up the cloth, but OH, it was such smooth and divine!! Try it and tell us what you think of it.
im thinking that because panty hose are such a synthetic material that you wouldn’t put anything hot through it or anything to acidic..might leak some of the chemicals into your juice.
Isn’t nylon or the material nut milk bags are made of a synthetic material also? I think that is what the paint bags are, or am I wrong? Thanks for your help :)
I like my paint strainer bags. Cheap and work just fine. Of course I don’t see some of the issues people bring up about some things being toxic. Sure synthetic things like plastic arent natural but doesnt mean that our bodies wouldnt try and remove them because they don’t belong. I can understand trying to use them less, but sometimes we just have to use what we have available. Remember with a better way of eating our bodies will flush out the evil things much more effeciently.
Chris,
I completely agree and applaud at your opinion. Nicely said!
Can you just get the paint strainer bags at hhome despot or some such?
Heehee… chasmyn, did you write despot on purpose? Cause that’s hilarious. ;o)
I use flour bags for my straining they are large 100% cotton with no dye. Afterwards you just soak them in food grade hydrogen peroxide. After work I left them hang dry. I have five of them for each day and then on Friday I just wash them all for the next week. Panty hose don’t work if you want to squeeze hard, paint strainer bags sound harsh, and nut mylk bag’s cost to much and they seem to bust holes in them often. Last resort you could use a clean white cotton T-shirt.
I have used cotton dishtowels, & now I have some sprout bags – just cotton bags with drawstrings – they are not as tight as the cotton fabric I bought to try it with. They work great!
Edit: I have also used cheesecloth just fine; I just put about 4 layers together so it would strain the pulp out, and I had a big enough square that I could put it over the opening of my jar/pitcher. I hand washed them in the sink & reused them.
I use panty hose or the tea towels that my grandma cross stitches. All i do is wash the pantyhose in hot water, and don’t squeeze to hard. The thing with panty hose is that you can never get all the residue off of it, so you have to get new ones often. But yes just cut a leg off. The tea towels work great because you can squeeze as hard as you want and than i just throw them in the washing machine with no detergent.
jenergy – Yes ;-)
