the label on lara bars states that they are ‘no added sugar, unprocessed, raw, non gmo, gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan, kosher’ the base of all the bars is dates. then according to the flavour you choose the nuts and fruits vary. i keep at least one in my bag at all times, for me or my children to munch on while we are out. i find them at almost any grocery store in the natural section and i’ve also found them in a large box at costco. there is a website on the label: www.larabar.com and a phone no.: 1-877-larabar.
I LOVE Larabars. These things got my teen off of “cereal” and energy bars. My family will continue to use them as they are close enough to perfect for my standards. They’ve saved me from a binge many times when I’m away from home longer than I planned to be.
The only issue with their “raw-nes” that I know of is whether the Almonds are still “truly” raw.
I called Larabar months ago to ask about the nuts being germinated. They could not answer my question nor anyone else there (at that time). So, I assumed they are not germianted… and an almost-perfect raw product. The fruit is raw, living… since they dehydrate below 118.
Unfortunately, they do not use organic ingredients, if that is a factor you consider.
Also, the chocolate flavoured ones are not raw. They use cooked cacao.
i think they are, but the chocolate ones are not as morning theft said
I think the most delicious form of a homemade larabar is eating fresh dates with pecans or walnuts.
This way you can use soaked or soaked/dehydrated nuts to make sure they’re germinated. You can have all of your ingredients organic and uber fresh. It doesn’t get easier than that :)
Just keep a little baggie of fresh dates and nuts ready to grab when you leave the house. You’ll always have your snack. Cheers!
The almond cinnamon truffles posted in the recipe section taste very much like a larabar. If you flattened it out and dehydrated it, it would be very similar. I brought it to my family’s traditional thanksgiving and everyone liked them. I followed that recipe but used soaked almonds instead.
Oh yeah… I forgot about the chocolate… the Jocalat bars (a Larabar product). The Jocalat bars use all organic ingredients. But again, no germinated nuts, I assume… so, almost-perfect raw product.
Any of the Lara bars containing cashews are not raw. Any of the Lara bars containing almonds are not raw. None of the nuts are soaked and sprouted.
And the fruit/nut combination (especially ungerminated nuts!) is probably the most difficult to digest, practically guarantees gas and other digestive troubles.
I would save them for emergencies only, if I were you, or stop eating them altogether.
There is a much better bar (if you must eat bars—and I do understand the value of bars as transition foods away from, say, Snickers bars or Cliff bars…) now hitting certain Whole Foods: Yoga Bar, by Everything Raw. It is truly raw, and organic, and does not contain as much bad food combining. And it’s absolutely delicious. Or just order a case of them to have on hand. And no I don’t work for them, I just think they made a very fine product. Here’s the link:
