thanksgiving?

i have been a vegan for a little over a year and recently made the switch to raw (slowly but surely :)). my mom has informed me that as far as thanksgiving is concerned i'm "on my own" and i need help!! what are some good thanksgiving day recipes that wouldn't require a dehydrator? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • ha! I'm the only veg*n in my family so they have informed me that I, too, am "on my own"

I am making the thanksgiving dinner in Rose Lee Calabro's Living in the Raw Gourmet. I am in love with this book. I think only the bread needs a dehydrator. I'll check and post the names of the recipes when I get home.

  • Charles, Kandace posted a fantastic recipe for whipped parsnips that was a big hit at my house last year. There is also a lovely cranberry sauce recipe on the site that I've served with great success. Matt Amsden has a nice stuffing recipe (tho' nut heavy) in Rawvolution, and Ani Phyo as a delicious looking apple pie recipe in her book. Good luck!

I think for thanksgiving I am going to make a raw lasanga, a massaged kale salad and perhaps a raw desert. Nothing to extravagent, I like my meals simple. On my blog ive made cauliflower mashed potatoes which turned out super delicious. This website is chock full of scrumptious recipes :) you just have to poke around a find a few that suit your fancy.

let us know what you decide!

i am definitely making ani phyo's apple pie and then a baked spaghetti squash with sesame oil and sundried tomatoes. i know i'll have whatever is there in the line of veggies and nuts. i like enjoying myself too much on holidays to be so strict about my food choices.

mikfizzle, i made the mashed potatoes you mentioned and i'm sorry to say but i couldn't stomach them!! i had to throw them away because i just found them inedible. maybe i'm so used to eating mashed potatoes made with potatoes. the texture was just really off.

Last year I brought a big salad to share with everybody. My father actually got made at my for "bringing my own food", but yet it was for the whole family. I would suggest making a tasty desert too, so you can show them how awesome raw foods can really bee. I will be honest though, I am contemplating actually partaking in some turkey this year, even though I have been 99% vegetarian for over a year now (high-raw foods of course).

why on earth would you even contemplate eating turkey?

last year I made an entire raw Thanksgiving-while camping! I made about 10 different dishes. i did use a dehydrator, but not for everything. I made a recipe called "mock turkey" from another site, although I don't remember where I found it. If you are interested, I will find it and post it. It was more or less a pate, but it was delicious. I also made a broccoli/cauliflower salad that was a big hit. I just made it yesterday. It's chopped broccoli, cauliflower, sliced green onions, dried cranberries and chopped pecans dressed with dressing made of pureed cashews, lime juice, agave and salt. The dressing tastes a little like mayonaise. It's an excellent salad. I also made carrot raisin salad, that recipe is posted here. I made pumpkin pie, that could be made with no dehydrator, there are several good recipes here. This year I am going to make whipped butternut or yams topped with pecans,, too. I took kale salad to two different dinners at others houses and it went well with their traditional Thanksgivings.

there is the turkey recipe-it's really good.

daniefon, i can't wait to make that turkey loaf!! i love bringing "my food" to parties for everyone to try. what pumpkin pie recipe did you use??

  • daniefondaniefon Raw Newbie

can't find the pie recipe I used. I may have just made one up. I just saw one that Kandace posted, that is about what I did, except no avocado. I use psyllium alot it makes things set up very nicely. I think a small amount of coconut butter would be good in place of the avocado. I don't care for avocado in sweets-but that's just me.

  • thank you so much this is all so helpful!!

does anyone have a favorite pie crust recipe?? i'm thinking a raw apple pie with some cinnamon/banana "ice cream"....

I'm making the Portobello Steaks and Mashed Potatoes from Matthew Kenney's Everyday Raw. I'm also making his Sausage Patties into meatballs and making his Pumpkin Pie and Chocolate Torte... I cannot wait for Thanksgiving to come! I'm on day 17 of a juice fast and i'm ending it this coming Sunday. Yay! I'm traveling for the 2 days after Thanksgiving and I'm making some of Russell James' bread (i'm not sure which one yet) and sandwich stuff - mayo, avocado, tomato, onion, lettuce, sprouts. I'm also making a mock Tuna and a few other side salads. My husband's family thinks i'm nuts anyway, so it doesn't really matter what i bring :) Oh, I think i'm going to try out Matthew Kenney's recipe for Potato Salad. Someone mentioned a good potato salad by Alisa Cohen... does anyone have that recipe? Thanks!

Carrie, is that the first solid food you're eating after your juice feast? I'd be careful about all of that processed, poorly combined, high fat raw first off and especially on a holiday and not at your home - you may not feel well!!!

As for me, I'm just eating fruit and greens like I normally do, I think. If my friends want to hang out (they're vegan or mostly vegetarian), maybe I'll make a special raw dessert but I doubt it.

I made a delicious raw vegan stuffing last weekend as a test run that turned out great! I'm making it again and bringing to a family vegan Thanksgiving dinner this Saturday.

Here's my blogpost with the recipe details and photo :-)

  • I tried Pure Jeevan (Wendi Dee's) pumpkin pie recipe. It was great. I really like the crust.

I preferred the lightness of fresh pumpkin vs. canned.

Their zucchini humus and cashew cheese is really good too!
