I am very interested in starting a raw food diet but have no idea where to begin. My current diet is awful full of fried foods and lots of sweets!! I don’t feel well on a daily basis. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroid, I have mitral valve prolapse w/ regurg, pvc’s, migraines with and without auras. Which I feel has left my vision abnormal, almost like static on a tv screen. I took antidepressant medicine several years back and had terrible side effects, people might think I am crazy but I feel like I never have gotten back to my old self. I have heard alot about raw food diets good & bad. If anyone can tell me how to get started that would be great. thanks!!

  • Books are the best. Information and knowledge are the key when starting any new diet. My favorite are Raw Power and Living Cuisine. Living Cuisine may be the best for beginners.

As far the migrains. Raw may help but it may be more serious. I used to have migrains and when I went to a chiropractor he found that my back was almost twisting around on itself. I would see a chiropractor for your migrains before anything honestly. It literally saved me from everything I thought was normal in my life… headaches, bad sleep, etc etc

  • Hi dnacol,

I am wishing you a lot of success in your pursuit to heal yourself. I am trying to enable my body to do the same. I am not 100% raw but when I am not I make sure it’s healthy food. The most important thing to me is keeping enough raw food around so I can reach for that first. Almond milk is a good thing to start with and guacamole with veges as a snack. Soups and fruits are easy too. Good luck!

Welcome dnacol, This is a great place to start with a raw diet, as it is one of the most supportive raw sites on the web. Books are a great idea too. I would suggest just looking through websites and/or books and finding as many recipes that sound good to you as possible, even if they would be considered dessert (they are still healthier than any other dessert you could eat!). Then….indulge yourself and eat! Most raw food recipes are absolutely delicious. A good way to start is eat raw until dinner. It doesn’t matter what you eat, as long as it is raw. After you do that, the next transition is to eat all raw (if you want to go the high raw route). Then, it is still eat whatever you want as long as it’s raw. After a while of doing this, your body will start to tell you what it wants, and you will eat it naturally.

Oh, a good book is 12 Steps to Raw by Victoria Botenko. It helps you get over your reliance on cooked food and has a lot of helpful hints. I ordered mine this week and can’t wait to get it! Even though I have been raw for a while I think it is something every person doing a raw lifestyle should have.

  • Seaweads are good for any thyroid condition. I would google raw foods and just start researching!! That’s what I did! You just have to saturate yourself with information and figure out what works best for you. Several different people have different protocalls – you just have to learn by trial and error.

Like jkd_soccer801 and spiritedmamma said. Books are a GREAT way to start! Victoria Botenko has wonderful books too. You can also check out my blog www.lindaintheraw.blogspot.com I’ve got tons of recipies, links to raw websites, other raw blogs, and recipie sites. That should help you get started with some basic info.

    Good Luck!

  • I’m pretty much in the same boat as dnacol, all the recipies have these new ingredients. What is nama shoyu, for instance? Is it better than bragg’s liquid amino’s.

  • spiritedmamaspiritedmama Raw Newbie

Nama shoyu is a kind of soy sauce. It is neither better or worse than bragg’s as they are both MSG triggers. You can substitute salt for either of them.

  • You’ve made the right move coming to this site. Everyone here is supportive and knowledgeable. My transition is going smoothly, I am sure yours will too. Good luck.
