Topic: Being Raw / Life Worth Living

deuce that moth. My girlfriend is slowly turning the page to the chapter I’m on. She’s coming to realization that school isn’t a necessety to survive. She just doesn’t know if she can take the leap.

Moth, go to Peru! You have nothing holding you back.Make life out there. Go now. Why must you wait? Get involved in a program that will help you transition. I’ve been doing a lot of research on Peru, and it has everything you love. The best part is it’s so easy to get around, and so beautiful. I have to go back, I didn’t spend enough time there. Maybe you can have a place for me to stay when I get out there…!

Zoe- Thanks for the link, i’ve been looking to doing something along those lines to get me started on my journey.

Pianissima- I didn’t realize that about the Australia. My friend is there right now and she said everything is so expensive. She said something along the lines of the minimum pay rate is $16/hour since everything is so expensive. I don’t know if she was over excaggerating, must have been.

I can deal with the crappy government, I’ve been doing it for 20 years now. I’m more worried about working 60-70hrs/week to only have my funds mean nothing when I try to leave the states.

New Zealand sounds LOVELY!

I will consider checking it out…

My dream is to move to Peru – I feel like my plans might be pushed forward because of the current world-economic situation.

Topic: Being Raw / Clean, Icelandic fish; to eat or not to eat, that is the question.

It seems to be a sad trend that more and more GR members are unable to discuss a topic without nasty responses to imaginary insults or just nasty responses in general. If I didn’t know better, it would think there was a direct correlation between eating raw foods and being disagreeable and/or illogical thinking.

While there is no doubt heavy meat consumption has a negative health and environmental impact, as do most things mankind commercializes (exception being intentional sustainable projects), it has been a mainstay for many vegans to disagree with anything a meat eater says and to blame them for all the world’s ills. There are plenty of devils to go around in every group, including vegans.

If figuring out complex problems so meaningful solutions can be had, this kind of discourse is never going to get us there.

QUIORA To comment on your post, which I did not think was intended as an assault – While there have been studies in the past that indicate newly cleared land is used to grow grains to feed cattle, that has been outstripped for at least the past two years by those who grow grains for biofuels. Biofuel crops are much more profitable and have been found to be responsible for app. 80% of the rise in world food prices.

In some parts of the world, ranchers have had to lower the price of their cattle because biofuels have driven grain prices up to where it is too expensive to feed cattle. Biofuels are now more profitable to grow than food crops due to the surge in oil prices. Another downside is that the carbon footprint of processing biofuels actually contributes more to global warming than fossil fuels like gas/oil.

The rise of the middle-class in India and Asia is contributing to more demand for meat products, if the biofuel market holds steady then the cost of these products may soon make them an occasional treat rather than a diet mainstay.

More Americans are willing to call themselves flexitarians for environmental reasons, I suspect many are also motivated by financial decline.

We are now overfishing the last 9% of the ocean’s fish. That source is going to dry up very soon for commercial fishermen. Fish farming will soon be the only alternative.

As world populations soar and food resources are strained, these factors should eventually lead to an overall decline in meat consumption. I suspect that would be many years out though.

Topic: Other Stuff / Economic Meltdown in Iceland

Today, just today, the Icelandic Krone dropped an estimated 25-60% in total value.

Whatever money people had in their wallet has HALVED in value, just today.

All banks in Iceland have closed their doors to prevent a run on the banks. The prime minister has declared all banks Bankrupt, as well as a kind of economic martial law where the Gov’t takes over the financial system to try save what can be saved. No bailout for Icelandic banks.

Don’t allow your self-importance (aka ego) get in the way of who you are

I myself always had the same problems. I’ve realized it comes down to the one very line. Our self-importance will only hold us back. I’m not saying to think down on yourself, I’m just saying don’t let your self importance get in the way of who you are. It’s quite simple. Work on it, you will see yourself excelling in all different catagories.

Yesterday, I went out to eat with my vegan girlfriend. We sat down, she ordered her food and I pulled mine out. It was a whole lot of bananas. While she sat there and ate her food, I confidentally ate mine. I saw people staring at the pile of banana peels, and watching me as I just kept eating more, and more, and more. It didn’t allow my self-importance get in the way of fueling myself. A month ago, I would have been embarressed and uncomfortable.

Also, friday I was at a wedding. I brought my own food; nectarines, homemade apple sauce, lettuce, sunflower seeds. Everyone was eating whatever they were eating and I piled up my pits/peels, pulled out my jar of sauce, ate my greens (by themselves), and enjoyed a handful or two of seeds. Everyone got drunk and sloppy on the dance floor, I simply got down on the dance floor. Danced every song, with everyone, not making a fool out of myself, simply living. I even switched into my regular clothes (moccasins, flannel, etc) while everyone else were in there get up.

Simply, I will live in my comfort zone. No one will force me out of it. I use to be different, now I feel best.

Live, Love Peace

Dodo, go to http://www.mountainroseherbs.com (my favorite place) OR any good herbal store you feel comfortable with, and you can either buy the prepared tincture or you can buy the plants, herbs and supplies and make it yourself for a LOT less money. (I make my own)

What a lovely choice of dinner! Way to go – bringing raw to everyone’s dinner table. I bet that will help put a positive spin on raw. Good for you!!

Winona, when you said she was brushing, I assumed she was actually making full contact on the tooth surface around the braces. I wasn’t trying to insinuate anything negative, just giving good advice based on my own experience with herbs, braces, and gum disease. Sorry.

australia (and esp. new zealand) are much cheaper to live in than the US. not even funny. SO MUCH cheaper. more lush, great place to live off the land and be raw vegan.

and you don’t need a job first AT ALL. almost everyone traveling in australia and new zealand look for work when they get there. there is a whole network of “recycling” going on, esp. with cars, places to live… travelers coming and going… a lot of camping… and if you’re interested, a whole community of people to get together with who are interested in doing the same thing.

go!

TomsMom – She certainly had gum disease due to not being able to brush around the braces. It wasn’t ‘something else’ – lack of brushing WILL cause periodontal disease. It affects you for life. She had to have another tooth pulled last week because of it. I wish you luck dodo, when gingivitis hits it will be too late.

Topic: Food Preparation / Recipe transformation help needed!

The most popular raw vegan parmesan cheese is basically pine nuts ground to a flour and added lemon juice and salt. Mix it all together and spread it on a dehydrator sheet, at 110 for 12-24 hours. It should be dry and crumbly.

I second the avocado. It is really rich and creamy and definitely would replace cream.

I live in the UK with my American husband. He has been here 4 years now. He had left the USA for pretty much the same kind of thing you’re talking about. And now we are headed back to the USA because we believe we can have a freer lifestyle over there. By freer I mean that we can live rurally, and as I get paid in pounds and we’d be spending it in dollars we’ll be able to do more than we can here.

I also have Australian citizenship, so Australia is always like a carrot dangling in front of my nose, but for me right now it is just too isolated, but we plan to move there later on, after we are through with the USA. I think that in Australia that it could be easy to live off the land especially if you’re raw vegan. If you live in the tropical part you could grow anything you wanted abundantly and quickly. I haven’t been there for a while but I think it is cheaper to live there than it is in the UK, I believed the cost of living was the same as USA. Australia is brilliant, the people, the land, the sun!!

You could always join an Eco protest camp, where people are live with nature to protect Her. You could tree sit, or protect rainforest, or guard a river. Earthfirst might have a list or some links. http://www.earthfirst.org/
