Recipe Directions

put the tumeric root, and the the lemon through your juicer, you can put the pulp back a second and maybe even a third time to get all the goodness out

leave the juicer running and pour about 1/2 cup warm water through.

mix the honey or sweetner in. if you dont want to use a concentrated sweetner, swap the lemon for an orange (it wont be as medicinal, but it will be sweeter…)

top up with 1-2 cups cold water and store in fridge. it keeps for a few days

serve over ice in short glasses.

tumeric also goes really well with freshly juiced pinapple and gives you a nice natural buzzy feeling..

Artistruth's Thoughts

By artistruth

a super yummy ayurvedic drink to help your liver, support immune system and is great for keeping a singer’s throat soothed. i first tried this drink at Indus restaurant in Bali, and it blew my mind!!! as soon as we came home i recreated it in my kitchen…

rawmaste- im australian, so not so good with inches... id say about the size of my little finger, but then sometimes i buy it and it is more swollen looking, like ginger. im really bad at measuring, i just use however much i have on hand... i mostly wanted people to try drinking fresh tumeric juice... its an experience!!!

i buy my tumeric from the farmers market. if you can get some that has a little shoot on it, you can plant it out like ginger and one day harvest your own tumeric

mopoke- i think my recipe tastes exactly like the one at indus, and i think the drink works so well as all the ingredients work synergistically. ive never heard of the raw egg!! but, how good are all the traditional herbal remedies in bali? and i LOVED your red cow recipe, super yum

do you think its possible to make this using tumeric powder instead of the root and blend it rather than juicing???

this was really strong, but I love the earthy flavor of the turmeric. I juiced 2 carrots to add to this just to make it a little sweeter and it still has a kick but just a bit milder. thanks for this, this recipe has been on my radar for when I got a juicer, which I finally did this weekend and this was the first recipe I made with it!

I couldn't find fresh root, so I bought the whole dried root (raw?) from India. I soaked it in warm water and it got a little softer. Then I vitamixed the hard root with the warm water and a whole lemon (peel and all). I strained it and added more water and sweetener. I don't know if it tastes like yours, but it is yummy and will have to suffice until I find the fresh one. Thanks :)

When you say 5 pieces of tumeric root - how big are these pieces - 1 inch each, 2 inches each? Thank you. (=^_^=)

Artistruth I love Indus! And the turmeric jamu! Apparently in Bali it's a standard breakfast, and when they want a real 'pick-me-up' a raw egg gets added in!

Are these the same ingredients as they serve at Indus?

Wow, I bought turmeric root for the first time just last night. How wonderful to see this recipe posted this morning! Matt, I've seen turmeric root occasionally at whole foods, but they don't always have it.
