Recipe Directions

juice the citrus fruits and pour the juice into a jar. (i use the basic old-school citrus reamer for this…the membranes in the grapefruit are really bitter and if you just throw the whole peeled grapefruit into an electric juicer, it comes out wickedly bitter. juicing it manually means that the membranes are not part of the juice, and thus, the juice is very sweet and not at all bitter. many people do not know this and just swear off grapefruit…) coarsely chop the gingerroot and squeeze the juice (i stick it between 2 spoons to squeeze it) into the jar…you want about 10 drops. add the vanilla, agave nectar, and cayenne, cover, and shake. this makes a concentrate which can be stuck in the fridge until you’re ready to use it. sometimes i add more agave if i’m in the mood for something sweet, sometimes i add less.

i usually divide the concentrate between 2 big glasses and add the water or sparkling water. stir and drink up!

interesting fyi-s:

if you’re thinking the cayenne sounds gross and you wouldn’t even THINK of adding it…try it! you can’t taste it…it just adds a tiny bite that goes really well in the mixture. i first had cayenne in my lemonade at pure food & wine in NYC and that’s when i fell in love with it. everyone else at the table did, too…they drank all of mine and then ordered glasses of their own. boo!

this drink is GREAT for ailing people…vitamin c is much better absorbed by the body when it comes from a whole food source, rather than a supplement…just heat the water up to about 110 degrees (it cools a lot when mixed with the juice), add a little more cayenne, and voilá! nature’s theraflu! and it doesn’t even taste like s#@t! ;-)

Jamestheraw's Thoughts

my mother forces me to make this frequently. i go through phases sometimes where I NEED citrus fruit…like, i would sell my brother to slavery to get it…and this really hits the spot. maybe that’s why my brother loves this drink also.

Oops, I mean that I used raw honey instead of agave because raw honey helps with coughs...

This was delicious and very refreshing. I made it for my son who had a cold and he drank it all, next morning he said he felt much better and he thinks it was the Citrus Ginger-Ade. No doubt it helped, what with all the medicinal citrus, ginger and cayenne. A Keeper.

Just made it and I really like it.

You might want to try to use a garlic press to get that Ginger juice going. It works super well!

Mmmmmm... just made this but I didn't have oranges or lemons so instead I used 2 tangerines and some key lime juice. It turned a BEAUTIFUL sunset orange color and tasted delicious, even my mum loved it!

Loved it! We didn't have a grapefruit or sparkling water so I used the center of a pineapple and warmed it slightly in the vitamix so it was a luke warm fruit tea sort of drink...just read that it helps a lot with sinus colds...we'll see (used raw honey instead of honey also to help with coughs) :) It was delicious! Thank you for the recipe, will buy grapefruits this week.
