Sun-dried tomato bread
18 slices
I adapted this from Ani Phyo’s Black Sesame Sunflower Bread. It’s great with smashed avocado and alfalfa sprouts sandwiches.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sun-dried tomatoes, soaked until soft; save water
- 1 cup walnuts, soaked
- 1 cup flax seeds, ground
- ⅓ cup flax seeds, whole, unsoaked
- ¼ cup black sesame seeds
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- 1⅓ cups sun-dried tomato water, saved from soaked sun-dried tomatoes
Preparation
In food processor, mix flax seeds, salt, garlic and sun-dried tomato water. Add walnuts and sesame seeds.
Divide the mixture into two and spread them on two dehydrator trays about 1/4-inch high.
Dehydrate at 110 degrees for 4 hours. Flip and score (use a pizza cutter) the bread into 9 slices. Dehydrate another 4-6 hours.

This was quite easy to make and turned out amazing. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the soaked walnuts before adding to mix. So, I tossed them in with everything else in the food processor and it worked out. Thanks for the recipe!

hey little mango, Just was wondering if you ever got a dehydrator yet. I really want a really good one but can’t afford one right now, but I got a dehydrator from walmart, and it works just fine for now and it wasn’t to expensive, compared to the big dogs. I am dreaming of a vitamix someday. good luck,

How does the original recipe include the sunflower seeds? (I’m trying to use more sunflower seeds because I’m a little allergic to walnuts, but I wonder if I just substitute them in this version if the spices would still work?).
Looks wonderful!

These sounds great..I make a simaialr version based on Juliano’s buckwheat crust.i soak buckwheat oats till they sprout and then in food processor I pulse them with sun-dried tomatoes, basil, garlic, evoo, salt&pepper until it becomes a dough then put them in the dehydrator for a day or two..

Just finished my first batch and it turned out perfect! It took a few hours longer in the dehydrator to get them completely dry, but it probably just depends on which dehydrator you’re using. I just made a delicious sandwich for lunch! Thanks for the recipe!

I tried this bread today. I used whole sunflower seeds instead of walnuts. I soaked then first for 30 minutes and then I have to add about 1/4 cup unsoaked whole sunflower seeds more because the batter needed more meal to ball up. It was too wet. I also soaked the sun dried tomatoes for only 30 minutes, they still where a bit hard. It worked very well. Because I try to avoid salt and condiments specially onions and garlic, they do not agree good with me, I added 1/3 cup of fresh basilicum, chive, parsely and seldery. Because the tomatoes do have a bit of see salt, it turned out to be very tasty. I share this for those who wonder how it would turn out if the walnuts were not used and with the minimum condiments. I was delicious. I prepared only half of the recipe and I used my oven to dehydrate and it took about 2 hours to have it ready.

Does anyone know if you’re supposed to actually use the sun-dried tomatoes themselves? Or just the soak water? The tomatoes are listed as an ingredient, but they’re not mentioned in the instructions. Thanks!

Terilynn (The Daily Raw) responded to my query that you are supposed to use both the sun-dried tomatoes and the soak water. They both go in the food processor at the same time. This was yummy:)!

These came out pretty good. They are easy to make, inexpensive, and are done in one day, which are all pluses. I didn’t know what to put on them so I topped them with some Miso Mayo, sliced guacamole, sliced mini-peppers, sliced cherry tomatoes, and sundried olives.
Thank you for the recipe, I will probably make these again since they are so easy to prepare.

This is the first recipe I made using my new dehydrator. It is so yummy! I didn’t have flax seeds, so I used sunflower seeds and flaxseed meal instead. I can’t wait to make it again.

My dehydrator just arrived 2 weeks ago, and this is the first recipe I tried. I didn’t have black sesame seeds. Wow, this was so delicious. I turned it over after 4 hrs on 104 degrees. I simply couldn’t wait & after 1 hour, I made a sandwich with it. The bread was still moist & delicious. Yum!
