Horchata 2

Another version of the Mexican drink, great on those hot Santa Ana days here in the Southwest!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Brown Rice
  • 4½ cups Water
  • ½ cup Madhava's Raw Agave Nectar
  • 1¼ teaspoons Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Preparation

Add 3 cups of water & rice to the blender and blend on high for 45 seconds. Turn off and add the remaining water and ingredients. Blend on high for 1 minute. Transfer to large container (about half gallon in size) and refrigerate overnight. Shake occassionally to keep the settled rice blended. Strain through a nut milk bag into a large bowl. Transfer this to a pitcher and enjoy over ice.

I miss horchata, but I don’t think brown rice is raw at all!!!

It’s uncooked & unbleached. You could also use jasmine rice, basamati rice, or any type of rice you like.

I used California Brown Jasmine Rice from Lundberg family farms. It’s organic. Why wouldn’t it be raw?

I’ve just never heard of rice being raw. I know that there is the cooked or steamed dishes that involve rice, but I just never see any recipes with “raw” rice, nor have I ever heard of raw rice. It may not be cooked in your home yet, but I don’t even know what kind of processing takes place to get it from a rice patty to a store, to you – the consumer.

If I’m wrong, enlighten me…though I don’t see raw rice anywhere in my future meals anyhow…

I tried your first horchata recipe and loved it! Is this one better, or just different?

As for rice being raw, I suppose you can always see if it sprouts or not. My guess is that some is steamed and some might not be(?)

Hey Raw_Chocoholic! I believe you tried MY horchata recipe…haha, that’s okay. Meganthevegan-Rice is usually not raw, but there are some brands of sweet brown rice that you can buy that are raw and when soaked will sprout.

This one is different in that the agave sweetner imparts a more of a neutral flavor.
