Inspired by Shazzie’s recipe, “The Great Glass Elevator.” Enjoy! But don’t eat before a job interview or a first date. Tips: It’s easiest to wait until the durian is ripe enough that it starts to split open. Also, you can try blending the durian/agave/vanilla separately if it’s too much for your blender, and then...

Recipe Directions

1. Remove the meat and the water from the coconuts. Place all the meat in a blender and add just enough of the coconut water until you get a consistency resembling yogurt.

2. Add the durian, agave, and vanilla into the blender and blend until it’s as creamy as your blender can make it.

3. Either use your ice cream maker, or else freeze the ice cream and run it through the blank plate of your juicer. If you don’t have either, try to re-blend it to get rid of the ice crystals.

4. Drizzle the cacao sauce on top and eat!

rkbush...the exact same thing happened to me, except they really DID call the fire department...it was soooooo embarrassing. I have to admit...I never told my boss that it was my Durian.

FreshFruit, once you smell a durian you'll understand. Some people say they don't really smell, others say the fruit smells like a mixture of turpentine, onions, and dirty socks. Apparently some places in Asia have signs stating that durians are not allowed. The fruit tastes great though!

Oh... one more thing for the warning label... Not responsible for arrests or other adverse experiences.

From what folks have said about their experiences, I think Durian should carry a warning label that says something like... Caution, not suitable for workplaces, high security areas, or other closed in places. Open in highly ventilated places, when by yourself. ;)

Sorry, but that is just too funny! I haven't had a good laugh like that for a while! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who has wild durian stories!

i was once on an airplane getting ready for takeoff, and i took out my tuperware of durian to eat. a few seconds later, the pilot came on to the loudspeaker announcing that there was an odor of fuel in the cabin and the plane had to be checked for leaks before the we could take off! embarrassing!

anyway, despite the smell (which won't even bother you if you're a true durian lover) durian is my favorite food, period!

I love Durian. Its the "King" of fruits. But you're right about the smell. I had some in the office once, and they almost called the fire department because they thought there was a gas leak. They could smell it 40 feet away. The best I ever had was this last January in the MeKong Delta in Viet Nam. It was fresh from the tree! I can't wait to try this! Thank you!
