The Gone Raw Blog
Gone Raw has experienced some exciting growth in the last few months and, as a result, life is getting rather slow here. This just won’t do at all! We will be moving the site to a new hosting account this week, which should help quite a bit.
We’ll keep you in touch as we go, but are likely planning the switch for Wednesday. We’ll do our best to alleviate interruptions to the site, but if you have an important event that you want to be sure to have a recipe for Wednesday to Friday, please consider printing it out in advance.
Thanks for your patience!

Looks like we aren’t the only ones swooning for rawleen’s watermelon mini cake delights! The folks over at We Like it Raw
have earmarked this delight for the 4th of July.
They also added kind words for Gone Raw – “Gone Raw is the best raw food recipe site out there. Seriously. If you’re into preparing raw foods or want to learn, you gotta join.”
Awesome!

Help us to create a category of 100% raw recipes by marking each of your purely raw recipes as pure. We’re looking for recipes that do not contain items such as agave, Bragg’s, Nama Shoyu, yeast or other items found on the dead food list (which aren’t actually raw, but find themselves moderately used in many raw recipes).

There is a great discussion going on now on this thread about creating a totally raw category of recipes (without Bragg’s, agave or the other common ingredients listed here). Do join in and help us in creating an even more useful site for everyone!

Thanks to germin8 for pointing out that Gone Raw has been linked from the Sierra Club’s Green Tip!
Their green tip: “Give the Stove a Rest…Save energy and keep indoor temperatures down by avoiding the oven on hot days. Opt for salads, fruits, cold soups, or cold sandwiches. Maintain dietary variety during warm weather by experimenting with raw food recipes.”
Hmm…we might have some recipes like this around here!

We noted a particularly interesting comment to our raw almond forum today – almondsalive.com is offering truly raw shelled almonds delivered for $10 a pound. Even better – mention Gone Raw and they’ll reduce the price to $7. How exciting!

We’ve noticed more folks interested lately in giving up nuts and finding no nut recipes. If you’d like to help make these recipes easier to find, go in and categorize your favorite nut-free recipes as nut_free and we’ll get this new category rolling. Thanks!

With much appreciation and excitement, we’d like to welcome Zoe as a moderator to the New to Raw forum. Zoe has been a member of Gone Raw for over a year now and has been so helpful (over 1,000 posts so far)! Not to mention the wealth of delicious raw food and information on Purely Raw. Thanks, Zoe!

We’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of interest the New to Raw forum has generated and want to be sure that all the new folks here are getting insight and answers to their questions. So, we’re looking for volunteer moderators to watch over the New to Raw forum and take time each week to guide some of the newer folks. We know many of you do this already, but are wanting to be sure that all answers receive a response.
Please write kandace @ needmoredesigns.com if interested!

We love that everyone is taking part in our forums (which weren’t even a part of Gone Raw on on launch)! We’ve added two new topics to our expanding conversation.
First, we’ve added a dedicated place to talk about specific health issues. This would cover anything from detox symptoms to specific ailments.
Also, we are thrilled with all of the folks new and transitioning to raw. We’ve created a space (new to raw) for asking questions and chatting about that journey. We don’t expect that everyone in this forum is going to be 100% raw – this is about your journey and initial questions.
Along the same lines, we’ll be posting a few articles about being new to raw at the top of the section. If you’d like to help us write about raw basics, please let us know!
Enjoy!

Thanks to Neeta at Integral Dynamic Health for kindly passing on a creative award to Gone Raw.
“For creating a place that allows everyone to share recipes, information and ideas about raw and living foods. What a wonderful gift for all those who need to be able to access precious knowledge and learn to prepare and eat a whole new range of fantastic foods. I am very grateful to you both and all the goneraw community, it has been such a help to me, thanks a bunch…....”
It means so much to us (this award appears to have made others happy aswell). Thanks for spreading the joy!

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, our thoughts turn to love and dessert! Why not whip up a batch of turffles (heavenly almond cinnamon truffles or nut cheese oh my)! Or, pamper your taste budys with this romantic looking cheesecake.
Thoughts on a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner idea? Do let us know!

Gone Raw has been around for just over a year now and what a year it has been; 2,500+ members have posted over 1,500 raw, vegan recipes while the forums (a later addition) now have almost 20,000 posts. How’s that for a fantastic year!
Gone Raw has far exceeded our expectations and we want to thank each of you for joining in and creating such a warm, friendly community. From each of us here at Gone Raw, Happy New Year!

We Are Back!
Raymond
November 14, 2007
Well, it’s been a really long week for us here at Gone Raw Headquarters.
As many of you are aware, a combination of horrible events conspired on Monday morning to bring our little site down. We had wind storms, we had power outages, and those who host our website made a small mistake as well!
Worst of all, our best minds couldn’t figure out how to fix it all for two days. Literally – we had three ace programmers giving it all the time they could spare, and it still took that long. Luckily, we also found a bunch of little bugs to fix along the way, so now Gone Raw is back and better than ever.
We apologize with all our hearts for this horrible inconvenience, and will do everything we can to keep this kind of thing from happening again. Thank you for all of your support.

We have a couple of exciting announcements today. First of all, congratulations to yammygirl, our 2000th member! Second, we would like to thank our first sponsors. Thanks partly to their support, we’re able to spend a little more time working on the site this month.
Which leads us to our third announcement – better recipe printing! This is probably the most requested feature of all, and we hope to have more time in the near future to keep improving Gone Raw for everybody. Thanks!

It is an exciting time here at Gone Raw. We’ve just passed our 1,000th recipe posted and Ray and Kandace are heading to London for a design festival this 15-26th. A huge thanks to Vaughn for helping out while we are away!

Thanks very much to the good people at Joyent, who host the Gone Raw site, we have fixed our problems with the website going away for hours at a time. Boy, that was no fun! Well, no worries, it’s all fixed now.
And just in time – we’ve just passed the 800 recipe mark and have more than 1500 users. Now that we’ve got our kinks worked out, we hope to find more time to add new features. So stay tuned!

Summertime is upon us and, here at the studio, our garden is brimming with collards, chard, parsley, strawberries and sweet peas! We’ve also just put out our latest newsletter highlighting some of our favorite summertime recipes. What are yours?

Hey everyone! If you’ve had any troubles signing up over the past few days, we wanted to let you know that it’s all fixed. We’ve got all our little issues sorted out, due to our move to a new web server, and everything should be smooth sailing from here on out. Enjoy!

Over the past weekend, we moved Gone Raw to a new hosting setup. In the process, our mail server broke on us, which means that you can’t sign up for an account! You can try, but you won’t get the all-important “confirmation email.” So it won’t work.
We apologize with all our hearts for the inconvenience. We will have this sorted out in the next day or two, so please do check back. We’ll let you know just as soon as it’s fixed. Sorry!

Thanks for your patience, everyone – Gone Raw has finished our move! We’re on the new web server and faster than ever. We should also stay online all the time now, and not vanish for an hour or two here or there like we were.
We hope you like it!

We’re excited to announce that, due to all the growth in the last few months, Gone Raw has outgrown its hosting plan! Tomorrow afternoon (Friday, June 8), we’re moving to a new host. It might take anywhere between 2 and 48 hours before you see Gone Raw again. Never fear – we’ll be right back, and better than ever.

Thanks to each of you who took time to take our survey! We’ve had a chance to pour over all of your ideas and are absolutely inspired to keep improving Gone Raw.
Check out the results in our latest newsletter.

Many of you have probably noticed that Gone Raw “disappeared” twice in the last couple of days. It appears that our web hosting company has been having some problems, and had to restart the computer that hosts Gone Raw. Unfortunately, this process takes a good hour or more, and there’s no way for us to let everyone know what’s going on, or how long it’s going to take.
Oh well, these things happen. All in all, they’re a great hosting company, and I’m sure they’ll get this sorted out. In the meantime, we do apologize very much for the inconvenience.

Gone Raw is still fairly new (about 3 months now) and we’re constantly looking for ways to improve as we grow. We’d love to hear your thoughts about what you like about Gone Raw and what you’d like to see added in the future. Please take our short anonymous survey (only a handful of questions) and let us know what you think. Thanks!
EDIT: Thanks everyone…the survey is offline now!

This weekend we added a couple new features. First, we added a much-requested Recipe Box to Gone Raw. You get to your Recipe Box by going to My Profile, and then click on My Recipe Box. Naturally, you have to be logged in! All recipes have a link on the right side, which lets you add them to, or remove them from, your recipe box.
We also took some time and reorganized the main recipe page as well. No more showing hundreds of recipes on one page! Also, you can now choose to see only recipes that use the equipment you have. Just look for the little check boxes on the right side of the screen. This is something we’ve wanted to add for a while. If you haven’t saved up for that dehydrator you’ve always wanted, you can just un-check the dehydrator box, and you won’t be shown recipes that need a dehydrator.
We hope you find these new features useful. Let us know what you think!

We’re putting the final touches on a recipe box feature that’s been requested, so watch for that in the next few days. We’ll also be looking at a way to make a shopping list from those recipes, as well as easier ways to browse and search the recipes on Gone Raw.
But that’s not enough! We want to hear your suggestions, ideas, and more. Maybe you could help out by writing descriptions of some of the ingredients on Gone Raw, to be shown beside the recipes. Maybe you have a great idea for looking through the recipes – all photos on one screen, perhaps? Maybe each recipe could have “related recipes?”
Whatever your thoughts, we want to hear them. Log in and post them in our forum, so we can get a better idea of what would make everyone the happiest. Because really, we’re doing this to make everyone just a little bit happier.

We’re pleased to announce a brand new Gone Raw dashboard widget for Mac users to grab. Just double-click on the file to extract the widget, then double-click on the widget to install it. You’ll need to be running Mac OS X Tiger for it to work.
It’s a simple little widget – but handy! Once it’s installed, you get a summary of the newest recipes on Gone Raw, including a photo if there is one, kept up-to-the-minute on your dashboard. If you see something that looks tasty, just click on its name, and you’re taken directly to the recipe page.
Read more about our widget, and another small new feature, in this forum topic.

We’ve just reached 100 recipes! Thanks to everyone who has shared their recipes with us. Do keep them coming!
Our goal for Gone Raw is to have such a variety of recipes that eating raw is fun, exciting and easy! This month, we are concentrating on adding basic recipes for people just getting into raw foods. What raw food helped you along in your first months? Do share!

I’m sorry about today, I really am.
First, our web host was having trouble. Gone Raw got really slow as the day wore on, until I finally contacted our service provider. We got it straightened out, and we were back to our snappy selves again.
Then, something I put into the Gone Raw code, to help me troubleshoot… well, it kinda blew up. So the site has been broken for the last half hour or so. Needless to say, I got rid of that troubleshooting tool, since it has proven to be more trouble than it’s worth.
Sorry about that. But don’t worry, we’re all better now!!

Badges!
Raymond
January 09, 2007
As a belated New Years treat, we’ve added something called “badges” to Gone Raw. What are badges, you ask? They’re little graphics you can put on your own website, to show that you are into raw foods! Here’s an example:
<img src=”http://goneraw.com/images/badge_160_1.gif” />
That’s one of four. How do you get one? Go to your profile page, and click on “Gone Raw Remote” on the right side. There you’ll find instructions for not only adding a badge to your website, but also for adding lists of recipes – yours, or everyone’s.
This is just the first of many things we plan to add to Gone Raw over the coming year. So stick around!

Happy Holidays to all of you from Ray and Kandace here at Gone Raw. We appreciate the wonderful community and support we’ve found here among all of you!
Many have told us that the holidays are some of the most difficult times for raw folks. We have a number of holiday and party recipes as well quick snacks and easy travel recipes for packing along on visits with family.

Oops!
Gone Raw was down for about a half hour this evening, from about 5 to 5:30 PM. We were making a few changes, and something… er… unexpected happened.
We’re still not sure what kind of weirdness caused this in the first place, but we’ll be looking into it, and won’t make any more changes until we’ve figured out how to keep it from happening again.

It’s been really great to see Gone Raw grow as it has been the past few weeks. We passed our 100th membership milestone last week, and kept on going. The brand new forums have almost 50 posts, but we’re hoping a lot more discussions start up there. And, we’ve been working on some features behind the scenes, mostly to make it easier for you to share your recipes.
We also sent out our first newsletter to all members and anyone else interested. We hope to keep up that tradition, highlighting great recipes and new features every month.
Let us know what you think of the new forums, and if there’s anything else you’d like to see at Gone Raw.

Slowly but surely, we’re working on some features we’ve really wanted to see. Yesterday, we fixed a few nagging problems folks were having, and we added discussion forums to the site. It’s a new place to talk about your favorite raw food recipes, techniques, and ideas.
It’s also a great place to let us know where you’d like to see Gone Raw headed. Got an idea for a great feature? Something driving you crazy? Let us know. So long as you’re “logged in,” you can join or start a discussion at any time.

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and we’re busy planning our first raw Thanksgiving here at Gone Raw. We have a number of raw Thanksgiving recipes up and we’re on the lookout for more ideas. So, I spent today at the Oregon Culinary Institute learning a complete raw Thanksgiving menu. Chef Bruce Horowitz inspired me to believe that you can make a raw version of just about anything you could think of! For beginners, take a look at his Parsnip-Pine Nut Whip and Orange-Chipotle Cranberry Relish. Absolutely delicious.

We’ve added a few small features to Gone Raw tonight. First, you can comment on the blog posts! There’s a link on the home page and in the list of all the blog posts. We’re hoping to get more feedback and discussion going around the site. What would you like to see us change or improve? Has Gone Raw helped you at all?
Also, there’s a couple shortcut links on the home page, if you’re logged in. You’ll see them in the upper left part, where the website overview / description is otherwise.
We hope you find these little changes helpful, and hope to add a few new features every week.

We’ve been up and running just about a week now, and it seems that folks are starting to take notice. The Oregon Live Tech Blog mentioned us yesterday, ”...from the same design team which brought us Cuppin’.” Emily Chang yesterday also linked to us in eHub. We got some press!
On a personal note, it’s been nice to see people in several raw food forums say nice things about us, and the emails people have been writing are very kind and encouraging. We’ve learned a lot from the feedback we’ve been getting – thanks for that. We’re working on adding a forum to Gone Raw, to make it easier to talk about your questions or make feature suggestions, but for now, you can just write rbrigleb@gmail.com with your comments or questions.
Finally, thanks to local Portland web innovators Adam and Ryan, for cheering on our latest efforts.

Well, it’s been a couple days since we put this site out there, but already we’ve had lots of great feedback. Please, keep it coming! Send any suggestions to rbrigleb@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do.
We just added a Quick Search feature today on the home page. Now it’s easy to find a recipe if you remember just part of the name. Simply type in something like “onion” and click Search, and presto! There’s some Onion Bread!
We hope you’ve been enjoying Gone Raw, and we look forward to bringing you more great recipes and features.

Well, as of November 1st, Gone Raw is open to the public. Welcome! We hope you’ll take some time to look around, and maybe try some recipes.
We have a lot planned for the future, so be sure to check back often. Have an idea? We’d love to hear it. Write to rbrigleb@gmail.com and we’ll see what we can do!
