Young Coconuts?

So what is the difference between young coconuts and the regular brown kind I’m used to? Why is the young one significant to the raw diet and is it bad to eat the regular ones?

It’s not that the regular ones are bad, it’s just that they have a much more distinct coconut flavor and are very hard to work. Young coconut meat is much softer and milder; it is better for making things like ice creams where you don’t want a distinct coconut flavor. It also blends smoothly and adult coconut doesn’t.

  • Ok. Thanks so much for your knowledge! Can’t seem to find them here anyway. I’ll probably have to ask whole foods to order some. Do you think they’ll want me to order a whole case? New to all of this obviously. Thanks!

Where are you located, jadams? Are you in a city? If you live in or near a city, seek out Asian markets, particularly Southeast Asian markets. My supermarket occasionally carries them, but my Southeast Asian markets nearly always have them. If they don’t, they’ll tell me when they expect the next shipment.

I love coconut water, but coconut meat and coconut milk give me wicked indigestion. I find that the older the coconut is, the worse my indigestion. I prefer the youngest ones that have tons of water inside, but very little of the soft meat. If you buy a hard brown coconut, it may have almost no water and rock-hard meat. If you’re game to hack it out and make use of it, then more power to you, but my attempts in the past have resulted in busted knife tips, huge messes and the odd mild hand injury. The young coconuts require technique, but are infinitely easier to handle once you get inside of them.

I agree with sweetpea, while WholeFoods and some natural foods stores may carry them many people I know have better luck at Asian/cultural stores. This goes for other items as well, they have some interesting things in there!!

Coconut water and I get along GREAT!! It is a great drink for keeping hydrated and very light. Coconut milk I have to use very sparingly and could never drink the same amount. Coconut meat my body can’t seem to make up it’s mind, I can do a good amount of dried meat but the young meat(while it tastes great) I have to limit greatly or goes straight to my GI in a bad way. All that said I do LOVE coconut, I just have to watch what I eat/drink.

I don’t think you have to order a case. I have seen them individually in whole foods stores in the refrigerated produce. :)

Got my first young coconut and durian today. Please if anyone can help with the best way to open each of these up I would be very grateful. Your favorite way to enjoy these new additions to my kitchen as well. Thanks!

Gratefultobe, I strongly suggest buying yourself a cheap but heavy cleaver. I have chipped an expensive knife trying to bust into a coconut. Years ago, I bought a cleaver at an Asian market. It is probably for dismembering poultry and hacking through meat bones. I never used it because I didn’t bother to get it professionally sharpened, but dull or sharp, it’s suddenly become a very handy tool in my kitchen for opening up coconuts.

I will take your advice 1sweetpea, I was so jazzed to get it open but a heavier cleaver that can just be used for this job is a great idea. Then I wont ruin my good cleaver. Hope it has become easier for everyone to find these neat additions to my live smoothies. I found them at an Asian market. Just wanted to thank those posting their problems getting their password and recipes back. I was so frustrated yesterday to be out of this great newly founded site. So glad to be back!
