WISDOM TEETH pulled ???

Okay here is my problem I have four wisdom teeth that are giving me major trouble. I have been 100% raw since Thanksgiving of last year 07 and I have not taken any drugs or medication of any kind. Is there anyone that knows a way I can have my teeth fixed in the most holistic way, without the serious pain killers and antibiotics they give you after procedures. I remember having dental work done in the past and feeling like a drug addict to the meds. Please any help is appreciated I have shattered my two back wisdom teeth and constantly having serious pain.

Perhaps these sites can help you locate a holistic dentist in your area and you can talk to them about alternatives.

So sorry to hear your pain. I can relate. I had all 4 out quite some time ago, but I remember the pain and discomfort. If they are not impacted, you might be able to have them pulled like any other tooth (with local numbing). Have you considered having 1 pulled at a time? That way, the pain may be tolerable. As far as pain management, my personal take is mind-over-matter, to the extent possible. I delivered a 10.8 lbs baby all naturally and never felt the need for pain meds, but I prepared mentally leading up to it.

It does sound like you need to have them out though. I would consider doing one at a time to make the experience less traumatic.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Yikes dude, I feel for ya! I’ve been meaning to bring this topic up. I’ve already had my wisdom teeth yanked but I was just wondering in general if there was holistic or natural ways to go about solving major dental problems, like say you needed a root canal or something. I have read before that using tea tree in a mouth wash can eliminate the need for antibiotics. I fear antibiotics more than I do pain. But I’m sure there’s ways to naturally reduce the pain.

  • Yeah I thought about one at a time, but what i fear is what coconutty is saying. I can’t fathom having to take the antibiotics, I think I can deal with the pain “MAYBE” :( but the antibiotics and all the other little unsafe drug practices you never thought about until you go raw. It helps that I am juice feasting most of the day with one salad meal at the end of the day chewed on one side.

Thanks Pundee I checked those website out as I had hoped to see more then what I googled myself, but it seems no one speaks of extractions that don’t require the drugs.

    THANKS ALL

Actually thank you because I have a dental appointment coming up and you just shed light into a new area for me. Holistic Dentistry! If it turned out I needed a filling I was already going to opt out of mercury but if there are other beneficial dental alternatives for me to look into, I think it is worth it. Unfortunately for the links I sent you the closest one for me is in Queens or Manhattan. I will have to look a little more locally.

    Good luck!

ardesmond2, you won’t need any antibiotics unless you have an infection now. It’s not really standard procedure to give an uninfected patient having a wisdom tooth extraction automatic antibiotics, although some paranoid oral surgeons like to do it, of course.

You do not have to take them, in any event. If you do have an infection, my own suggestion would be to take them. No, I’m not a lover of most medications, drugs or even medical professionals, but I wouldn’t mess around with any infection near the head.

If I misunderstood your circumstance, then ignore me!

Edit: by the way, my cheap fricking oral surgeon didn’t give me any painkillers afterwards and it didn’t kill me. Just made me cry for a week. Make sure you fix up big batches of raw fruit purees for yourself before you have your surgery, because you’re not going to be able to chew for a while.

  • Alix1962 Thanks you hit the nail on the head.

  • Hi ardesmond2,
I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled all the same day about 15 years ago. After extraction I used tea tree oil as an antibacterial rinse to assure no infection would develop. I also took extracts of valerian and passion flower for their calming effect. Nothing else. After 24 hours of some pain I was back at work. These remedies are not “raw” but were certainly better than drugs and antibiotics. At the time I was vegan but not “raw”.

  • Rawnutition.ca : Now that’s what I wanted to hear. So did you use tea tree oil straight mixed with water or was there some type mouth wash you bought in the store. This sounds really promising with the valerian and passion flower.

I had some major pain caused by my lower wisdoms and had one taken out, but it was so painful that I decided to keep the other. I guess having the one out relieved pressure on the other, cuz I’ve had no pain at all since then.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed 6 months ago and it was a horrific experience, MOST pain Ive ever known…they almost broke my jaw and as a result I had atrocious TMJ, could not eat solid food for 3 weeks thereafter….I DEF needed the pain meds they gave me.

You never know what it will be like, hopefully you will have a cake walk…I wish I had :(

  • Alls I can say is UGGHHH. I don’t think mines are impacted but they are chipped. So who knows, you are right each person has there own issues. Hoping this will be a cakewalk, but looking on the positive side at least I have green smoothies. If you think about people on the standard American diet they only think to sip on chicken broth EWWWWW.. LOL

Thanks all for your post. This should give me the push to take care of this before it gets any worse. I am driving my family crazy at home eating on one side of my mouth.

I hear ya…I went over 10 years before I got them yanked…I just simply could not endure the pain any more! On the plus side that pain is a fleeting memory and I no longer have horrific migraines and chronic pain from them :)

I wish you all the best!!
  • Sorry to hear about your problem wisdom teeth. I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed about 25 years ago and they did not give me antibiotics. I was prescribed a pain medication which made me so nauseous I decided I would rather have pain. The pain was some of the worst I’ve experienced but I did manage to get through it without meds. I’ve always hated taking medications, even as a young child. You will have less swelling after the surgery if you don’t lie down completely. I slept sitting up for several nights and had little to no swelling. If the teeth are not impacted it will be a much simpler procedure to just have the teeth pulled and maybe somewhat less pain involved. Good luck and I hope you have an easy, painless and fast healing experience. Keep visualizing the positive. That should help.

  • I just used a few drops of Tea Tree oil in a 1/4 glass of water 3 to 4 times a day. I did have pain but I made sure I was at home in a quiet space after the extraction and just got through it.

  • I met a lady that had acupuncture done the day before she had her teeth pulled. She had two needles, one in each ear left in during the procedure. I guess the way they inserted them into her ears alleviated the pain, well actually it made it completely painless. She was up walking and talking just fine the next day. It was really cool. She also stated that she had absolutely no swelling and her gums were almost completely healed!

Wow, that’s amazing with the acupuncture! Well I’m glad to have read a few tips here. It’s been in the back of my mind to look for a holistic dentist and last night out of nowhere I was having some pretty extreme tooth pain. Not quite as painful today but it’s making me quite nervous. Almost feels like I have a loose filling or something, I don’t know. But me being me of course the first thing I think of is root canal! LOL. But anywhoo, wish me luck with this! I’ll definitely try to get in with someone this week. I just wanted to add another tip. The only thing I really had on hand last night was peppermint oil. I kept applying that to the whole area around the tooth and it actually did help with the pain quite a bit. Helped enough that I was finally able to fall asleep!

  • coconuttycoconutty Raw Newbie

Okey dokes guys… Well I had found myself a nice holistic dentist! That’s the good part. And what do you know it turns out that I do in fact need a root canal (on monday). I don’t want one but I can’t find any other way around it. So wish me luck! I’m going about this in as natural way as possible. I don’t see any way around having to get the novacaine, but as far as taking any pain pills, hopefully I won’t have to. I’m getting started on my pain reducing teas tonight so hopefully I can stay ahead of any pain that might come post procedure.

  • coconutty please keep us updated.

I didn’t read all the posts, but arnica montana (or something like that) is used for pain relief. We were going to try it… but you’re supposed to use it before the surgery and we didn’t find out in time… (my husband had his wisdom teeth pulled last year).

  • coconuttycoconutty Raw Newbie

Ooooooo-K… Well I made it out of there alive!!!! LOL So last night I started up with some super strong valerian tea to get the ball rolling. I also started up with some homeopathic pain relief drops the dentist had already given me. It’s got 3 things in it, arnica is one of them, the other 2 I don’t have a clue what they are but – symphtum officinale and hypericum perforatum. This morning I did another strong cup of tea along with the drops. And then since my appointment was at noon I did another dose of the drops (it says 3x’s a day). So it’s about 7pm my time and the novacaine is finally wearing off and I’m not drooling all over myself anymore (ok, It wasn’t that bad). It was kinda funny being that numbed up. Anywhoo… No real pain setting in. I have the overall feeling of discomfort like someone was screwing around in my mouth but so far so good. Knock on wood of course! I plan to do another cup of tea and another dosage of the drops at bedtime. I will post again in the morning with a pain update!

  • hmmmm arnica montana this is interesting I have to look into this as I am starting to feel some sensitivity with my wisdom teeth.

Coconutty I really appreciate you keeping us updated on this, I have to have four of my wisdom teeth pulled and you are really motivating me to take the steps needed.

    Peace and Blessing=s

  • coconuttycoconutty Raw Newbie

Hey, no prob! Gotta put the info out there in case other people have the same problems!

Today went really well. I only needed to do the drops in the morning! I just find it a little interesting that so many people were telling me “oh yeah, you gotta stay ahead of the pain, just take lots of ibuprofen…” And here I am doing absolutely fine on my natural stuff :-) Woohoooo!

Now whether it’s a factor or not, I don’t know, but I feel I must add that for the past few days I’ve been somewhat fasting. I’m not completely fasting, so I don’t know what to call it. I cut my food intake way way down. For example one of the days prior to, I ate like 3 apples, an orange and a grapefruit, and drank tons of water (felt great). I figured it would allow the natural remedies to work to the fullest extent as well as allow myself to heal better just from any associated trauma from the procedure.

But I must say I am seriously mourning the loss of my tooth! Um, is this normal??? LOL I mean my tooth is still there obviously but it’s dead now. I feel horrible, I killed my tooth!!!!!! Although it is nice to chew my food on that side of my mouth now and not feel pain, haha. But I think partly it’s due to the fact that I could have easily prevented this, and I could punch myself in the face for not getting into a dentist sooner. But all you need is one bad experience to create the fear!

So this was round one. I’ve heard of different ways about doing root canals, and maybe it just depends on the severity, or just the doc’s preferences. I go back again in a couple weeks to have him clean it out again to make sure it’s all good and no infection is brewing. After that it gets sealed up for good. It’s interesting cause my mom recently had one done and they put her on antibiotics. So of course she was telling me all this crap and I was worried they were gonna try to do that with me. Maybe that’s why he’s having me come back for a second time (yeah, he already knew darn well I wasn’t takin no darn anitbiotics lol), I don’t know… My credit card doesn’t seem to know either, haha!

  • Removal wisdom teeth at modern level is one of extreme methods of treatment when the tooth cannot be restored, or it injures a nerve and causes damages to a mucous membrane of cheeks, language and stirs to a normal bite.

Operation removal wisdom teeth needs to be made only as a last resort when other methods to rescue a tooth are already impossible or such tooth can be the reason of other, more terrible complications. For example, if there are the teeth, which can cause cysts, inflammations of a trigeminal nerve. Such teeth is better for removing.

The most frequent reason of removal wisdom teeth is a necessity of sanitation of an oral cavity in the presence of such diseases, as a chronic periodontitis in an aggravation stage when it is impossible to liquidate the inflammatory centre at a tooth top. Therefore treatment of a periodontitis should be timely. A multiroot teeth which are the osteomyelitis reason also leave. The stomatologist can remove a teeth at adjustment of a demountable artificial limb, but for this purpose there should be more strict indications.

The reasons of removal of a teeth are various. Candidates on removal are teeth strongly destroyed by caries which cannot be restored other methods.

    - The teeth amazed with illness at started cases teeth start to be loosened.

    - The broken teeth which cannot be restored.

    - Incorrectly located teeth in a tooth number.

If it is impossible to restore such teeth conservative methods of treatment the stomatologist resorts to removal. After removal of a teeth in a jaw defects are formed, and an adjoining teeth starts to bend towards the formed defect. The Tooth-antagonist from an opposite jaw starts to be put forward towards defect. It is all can occur even at removal of one tooth. These phenomena lead to that chewing process is broken, chewing loading in respective area sharply raises. The habitual condition of jaws is broken and bite deformation develops. And it can strongly be reflected in the general condition wisdom teeth.
