Wild Food

Okay, I really need some help here. If anyone knows of any wild plant guides online that are free, I would really really appreciate it. I live in Florida if that helps any. I went raw in November but the past month or so I have ate very little raw. We have very little money and with my husband not eating raw, I’ve had a very hard time buying things that we can both eat for under $40 a week. There was a week there that a relative bought us groceries and I ate a bunch of pure garbage. I started out buying agave and organic produce and nuts but I can’t afford anything like that anymore. I think I remember reading on here about people eating raw on a budget so I was hoping for some tips or for someone to point me in the right direction. I do remember someone saying that foraging was the best way to get some free greens and such. I just don’t know how or where to pick.

Any tips or links on how to eat free or cheap would be most appreciated!!!

My Brother lives in Boynton Beach and goes to this little stand and loads up on his fruits and vegetables for about $10. Are you close to there? If you are I can find out where he is. Look around for road-side stands, they are very affordable, probably not organic, but cheap and raw foods. Also, in Florida, is a place called ROBERT IS HERE. I believe it is robertishere.com. He has great foods. I’ll look for some links for you :)

I’m really into foraging. I mostly gather berries (not yet in season), dandelion, chicory, and other local greens I can’t name. I had an elderly woman from the area show me the wild plants eaten during WWII. And this website helped too website link It shows wild edibles that you can forage for. If you’re having trouble economizing, buy the “dirty dozen” organic and the rest non. And sprouting is great.
    Happy foraging!

  • there’s a roadside produce stand that i frequent and usually get everything i need for about $20 but that would be a spurlge at this point. if i buy any food right now i would overdraw our account but….there is always friday! unfortunately i can’t afford to even get the dirty dozen organic. thanks for the foraging link!!
thank you so much for your help and if anyone else has any links i would love it!! hopefully this financial situation we are in will be ending soon.

    RawrAdisaurous,

You might want to consider taking a foraging class (some state parks or beaches might have some) and honestly get a GOOD book with very detailed pictures. A friend of mine who was not an amateur forager picks some greens that she thought was something else (it was very hard to tell from just a quick glance for this type of wild green) and it was the poisonous lookalike and she died. :(
So be VERY careful with the greens you pick! Stick to the very identifable ones.

Get a book that is native for your area too. My bf is very into foraging he likes “Wildman” Steve Brill. He has a website but he is in New York which may not be useful for you. I remember when we were in the Keys we ate some sort of green plant that grew on the beach – it was nice and salty because it was close to the water. I don’t remember what it is called.

  • Not sure where you live in FL but..

I live in Florida too and just started going down to Josh’s Organic Farmer’s Mkt in Hollywood. It is awesome…you can get organic greens there for cheaper than the store.

I also found a little stand at the Farmer’s Mkt in West Palm that sells hydroponic greens for VERY cheap.

If you are close to West Palm, you HAVE to go to The Hippocrates Institute. They give free open houses and answer all of your questions. They are SO nice!!! website link

  • Thanks for everyone’s help. I live in Lakeland, near Tampa. I used to live in Boca Raton but now i’m up here. I checked out some books at the library but the pictures aren’t very good. Hmmm….are you allowed to forage in state parks??

In some states you are – I just moved from Wisconsin and and up there my bf and I picked edible food from the parks – you are allowed to pick there. You would have to check with the Florida parks.
