Where has all the spinach gone???

Is it just here in Atlanta, or is the organic spinach missing from shelves elsewhere?

  • I just bought some last night from Whole Foods here in KC area.

I am having problems finding it here in Arizona as well. You can find the pre-packaged kind, but not the "whole plant" bunches in the general produce section....very mysterious!

  • It's some kind of mildew that organic spinach is prone to during this time. Hopefully it will be back soon! We're having the same problem here in Portland, Oregon.

  • I can only find pre-packaged spinach in my part of Georgia as well. I just spoke with the produce manager of our local store (Publix). He went on to tell me that they are discontinuing organic ginger, organic broccoli, organic grapes, and the nice, big & juicy organic oranges. He does not know if the organic pineapple will be discontinued as well or not. He also mentioned that he did not know if they would be receiving any organic peaches, nectarines, or apricots this year. He could not explain why they were discontinuing...that it had to do with the distributors. We definitely prefer organic over conventional. But will do conventional if we just cannot find the organic produce we are looking for. (Cringe) It is about a 1 1/2 hour - 2 hour drive to Atlanta Whole Foods. But it would be worth the drive to us. Does the "Dekalb Farmers Market" sell organic produce?

I am also interested in checking out the "Decatur Organic Farmers Market".

We have a small local organic farmers market in the area, but it doesn't meet all our needs. Growing some of our own with a small backyard. Someone recently brought the following site to my attention...(I have not checked it out yet.)

A few weeks ago I ran into Whole Foods and they had none in bunches, but I've been able to find it at the farmers market.

Where does our spinach mostly come from?

My hubby went to Wegman's and saw a sign 'apologizing' for the inconvenience... of lack of food due to the drought in California. He said many 'shelves' were only half full.

  • it's missing from Indiana as well! So is the organic celery!

    SimplyRaw,

The Dekalb Farmer's Market is good place to get organic produce most of the time. They have their sparse days but I usually can at least get the basics when that happens. Another place you should check out for organic produce and all other kinds of great health foods and books is Rainbow Natural Foods.

  • Rawaholic - Thanks! Happy to hear I can purchase organic at the Dekalb Farmer's Market. I also appreciated the link you posted. Rainbow Natural Foods looks quite inviting. :)
