where to find ingredients??

Hello! My husband and I just switched to a raw diet about 2 weeks ago. Things are going great! I just had a question. We bought a raw foods 'cookbook' called Rawvolution, and many of the recipes require Coconut Water and Dulse Flakes. I have searched every store I can think of in the area, and only one carried pure coconut water. The trouble is, it was the size of a pop can, and for many of the recipes, it requires more than that, plus it seems, we will be using it a lot. Does anyone know of a place to buy it in bulk online? I am in the Washington area, so even if you know of a store, that would be helpful.

My second question is, how do I know if we are getting a well rounded raw diet? I feel we're doing what we can, but am afraid we may be missing crucial vitamins.

Thanks for your help!

hi kelly, maybe for a week you and your husband should put your meals into www.fitday.com.

it breaks down everything you've eaten so you can see what's in your food. it's pretty easy to get all your vitamins if you're eating lots of fruits and veggies.

  • Awesome! I will do that. Thanks so much!

On the coconut water, in raw recipes it means the water from a baby coconut. You can find them in asian markets, some grocery stores and health food stores. They look like a pointy white fibrous thing. You have to cut off some of the white at the top to get to the coconut inside. There are many methods to opening them. I cut away the white fiber from the top and then use my power drill with a big bit on it (pencil sized) and drill two holes, then I drain out the water into a glass. Now that it's empty, I hit the top with a hammer and lift off the part I smashed and now I can scrape out the flesh inside, which is creamy and white. if it is pink or purplish, it's gone bad. You can also order them online. I saw them recently either on naturalzing.com or rawguru..com.

  • Cool, I will definitely look into that. Thank you!

  • Wow! I entered in all my food from today on www.fitday.com, and it seems to me I've only eaten around 900 calories. Today was a lighter day than usual, but not that much lighter! Should I be having more? It also says I've only eaten about 1/2 of my nutrients, excluding Vitamin C which was WAY over the percentage!

    Any advice?

    I use the color method...

For each meal I make sure to eat something dark red, orange, green and black or purple from the fruits and veggies...

I also add a protein to each meal, usually sprouted pumpkin seeds, Hemp seeds, Chia seed, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, pecans, mac's, pistachios, Brazil nuts &/or Hemp powder...

In the morning my smoothie is a mixture colorful fruits with aloe vera juice plus more items...

In the afternoon my smoothie is a mixture of colorful veggies with aloe vera, spriulina and chorella and more items

My dinner meal is a huge colorful veggie salad that I slowly eat to completely masticate before swallowing...

Hope this theory help you to balance your nutritional intake... smile

    Edit~

Buying in bulk is easy from iherb.com, I have a $5 discount coupon code on my profile if you would like to use it... smile

I buy cholrella, Krill oil, coconut oil and many other items from them...

Calorie intake depends a lot on your size, energy level, and weight goals - but 900 calories is half of what the official tables say I should take in (five foot six, weight in the low 120s, sedentary lifestyle).

As for where to buy your ingredients...check for the internet storefront thread. If it's not on the first page I'll try to give it a bump, since this is a question that comes up every few days.

I've seen many ways to open a young Thai coconut. Many seem a bit scary/dangerous to me! This one is the *easiest* I have ever seen, and it is how I do it now. Plus, the vid will show you what it looks like too, so you can find one easier!

  • Wow, thank you all!

waterbaby12347- I have been trying to do the color method, but my question is...where to get blacks/purples? I don't like onions or eggplant...

Thank you for the coupon offer! I'll look into it.

Suasoria- Yah, I am 5'3 120, actively chasing a 2 yo around all day...but I'm FULL from what i'm eating already! I've been making some smoothies and hopefully that will help. I am going to check out the storefront page right after this!! Thank you.

Pixx- Awesome!! That is very helpful...I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a young coconut. I'm in Washington state, so they aren't quite as abundant as other areas, I'm guessing.

kellycalkins~ I never saw them either, until I knew what I was looking for! :~) Now, I have found them in a few places. I'm not entirely sure if they are newly there, or if I just never noticed them before. :P

As for blacks, and purples- Don't forget the fruits! Grapes, raisins, plums, blackerrries, etc...

  • OH yah!!! I didn't even think of those. Awesome!

Don't forget purple cabbage either, I've seen but not tried purple cauliflower... smile

I do use blackberries and seeded purple grapes daily in my morning fruit smoothie... In my lunch veggies smoothie and my huge night time salad, I use the purple cabbage along with all the other colorful veggies...

  • Cool! Great suggestions. I forgot all about these things.

  • I would highly suggest checking out The Raw Food World( http://www.therawfoodworld.com/index.php?ref=591&affiliate_banner_id=12 ). They have fabulous customer service and can answer your questions and supply a ton of Raw food necessities:).

I live in Washington too and I saw a whole lot of fresh coconuts in Whole Foods this weekend. I buy all my bulk nuts and grains like buckwheat, quinoa, millet, and amaranth there.

For sprouting, I found a great online store for my alfalfa and broccoli seeds at http://www.mountainroseherbs.com, they ship fast and they are next door in Oregon :)....they also have amazing spices and clays if you like to make your own facial masks. Let me know if you have trouble finding the website or have any questions, go to my website and email me if you need (don't want to post my email here).
