cashews not raw because they are a member of the posion ivy family and need to be heated, bummer. Walnuts not always raw, bummer. Pecans not always raw, bummer once again. Macadamias,and brazils not raw unless in the shell, bummer :). I suggest that you find a raw online shop that buys the nuts from the actual farmer who produces them. Almonds purchased from a farmer are raw, so Im guessing the same goes for other nuts. Here are some of the top raw websites! Well Whole Foods was okay but not really worth the drive (IMHO).
SarahJ – what did they have at Whole Foods that would be good for our lifestyle? I’m going to visit my mom over Easter and there is one about 45 minutes from her and I’m trying to figure out if i want to go there. There’s also a Trader Joes which i heard has good prices on nuts/seeds, etc… Anyone have any ideas? I went on sunfoods.com and they are sooooooooo expensive! Good stuff, but expensive. I’ll keep searching for the best price out there and post when i find it :)
I have just placed an order with real raw foods. They state very clearly that their stuff is raw and organic. It is a British Columbia based e-store. I am happy it is in Canada.
The only thing is that they have a minimum order of 100 bucks. But you know, I needs so much stuff it wasn’t hard to reach that min. They have dried fruit as well. Also nama shoyu and coconut oil.
This is what I got: 2 poounds almonds 2 pounds cashews 1 pound mac. nuts 1 pound walnuts 1/2 pound sundried tomatos 2 pounds medjool dates 1 32 oz. bottle of Nama shoyu That came to 105 bucks before shipping. They will get hold of me tomorrow with the shipping cost. My hubby figures it will be 20, 25 bucks. Their pricing is pretty good. The more you buy, the better the deal. So kinda whole sale. So if we could get a bunch of us together from this area, we could start our own little, is co-op the right word? The ‘nut’ club! ;) It would give us greater purchasing power!!!

Hold a sec!!!!! I thought only ALMONDS are pasterized!! Someone please clarify because I’m about to freak out!
I have heard that pecans may be heated so that they come out of the shells easier! I wouldn’t put it past them to do that with walnuts as well. I am quite annoyed!

Natural Zing sells unpasteurized almonds… and My Organic Market (I saw in Laurel, MD) sells steam pasteurized almonds that still sprout! (that’s what their sign said)
Lots of kinds of nuts are routinely heat-pasteurized in shell before they are shelled. Industry standard. Other kinds are heated becuase it makes shelling easier. Pecans, brazil nuts, macadamias, etc., are usually heated before being shelled. Ask the real source of the nuts, like the company who actually does the processing(the stores selling them are not neccessarily being honest although many are).
I’ve asked three raw stores and two conventional and only one raw and both conventional answered, the other two raw stores will not answer my questions on how they know their nuts are not pasteurized and how they are processed. That’s how I make my decisions on where to buy nuts from. Anyone who charges 50 percent mark-up for raw nuts but refuses to speak to you is not trustworthy, no matter how cool they seem to be.
Wow, the prices are high for organic unpasteurized… I never did the math. Good thing we (should) only eat a small amount of nuts per day.
carrie6292 – the Whole Foods Market was beautiful – chock full of organic vegetables. My comment that it was ‘okay’ stems from the prices. There would be no way I could maintain my mortgage and buy my produce there.
I have made a decision to buy organic when it’s reasonable but also buy what I need from the regular suppliers. It’s the only way I can manage it. If you are close to Hamilton and have the same feelings, there is a wholesale fruit and vegetable distributer that has fantastic prices. They are on Ewen Rd (I think the number is 30, not sure…but it’s not a long road) and are called W.F.S. Wholesale Food Supplier. They supply local restaurants with fresh produce so the quality is really good and you just can’t beat the prices.

Actaully, the prices beat what I am paying now for what are probably not unpasturized! So I am quite content with the pricing. I am going to have a boatload of nuts!! Lucky I have a big chest freezer! Gonna last me a long time!!
I pretty much do the same as SarahJ. I buy all that I can organically grown, the rest is regular produce. I buy a natural veg. wash for things that I can’t peel. I don’t know if it is helping, but at least it takes off the outer residue! So we do the best we can!!
Yes that is a great website. But the 10 lbs. which are now 59.99 are not organic, but yes not pasteurized.Their organic 10 lbs. is 127.50.
rawguru.com sells all nuts, truly raw, and if you buy more than $100 they give you free shipping. But I think it’s through UPS. How come your against UPS?
Hi Luna. I work in Burlington/Oakville and have recently discovered that there is a Whole Foods in Oakville – just 10 minutes away – woo hoo. I am going to go there tonight after work and see what they have. I will keep you posted.

I spoke to them on the phone and they seem like real nice folks. They got their business started because they were wanting good stuff for themselves. They eat raw too, and now they are able to share with us. They do have a minimum order though of $100. But it isn’t like you are going to be doing that too often anyway. I told him I was making macaroons and wanted to add some of their coconut to my order and he wanted the recipe! Cute. ;)
I have yet to recieve the product, as it went out only yesterday from B.C. I will post again when I get it and let you know what the stuff is like!
