What's up with Soy/Soya Milk?

SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

Hi All

I am curious why nobody drinks Soy/Soya milk. There is probably a very obvious answer which I will find by digging through the mounds of information I have but I haven’t found it yet.

I would love to pick your brains.

Hmmm, number one, it is pasturized, so it’s not raw. Number two, I heard too much soy deppresses some function in the body. Thyroid? I can’t quite remember! Duh. :)

I avoid soy at all costs. For information on the dangers of soy…

  • i understand that store bought soy milks are pasturized however isn’t there a raw way to make it???

purified water with blended soy beans??

soy beans can be raw, no?

  • No way to be eat soyabeens raw. First thing because it would taste horrible, second is that raw soyabeans are toxic, they contain substances which disturbs digestion, and very bad for the nerves.
Thats why they can only be eaten after thorough heat tretment.

  • there’s something about soy beans messing with hormones…you’d have to check i’m not sure

  • I avoid soy because not only is it toxic raw, but even when cooked it’s not so good for you. Past all that, it’s more than likely owned and distributed by Monsanto. For the way I live I avoid, to the best of my ability, purchasing items from monopolized businesses. If you don’t know, Monsanto is a very evil distributer. Even though they own all gmo soybeans somehow all beans that are organic have been affected by them in one way or another. Maybe this isn’t 100% true, but I’ve heard enough negative facts/stories about soy that it’s a precaution I’m willing to take. I just don’t trust soy…I’m even leery about eating nama shoyu.

You can’t make it raw and taste anything remotely human, trust me. I’ve done it, lol! I made a really lovely, creamy white liquid and spit it out as fast as I could! :-D

  • Soy is getting a really bad rap lately. Most of the problems are coming from soy being used in weird forms, like partially hydrogenated soybean oil and soy lecithin. Also, soymilk is generally over-consumed because people try to substitute it for regular milk and drink several servings a day. When soy is in forms like tofu, tempeh, and miso, a lot of the reported problems are no longer an issue.

Though none of the above forms are raw, I see nothing wrong with the occasional consumption of soy by someone who is not 100% raw. The phytoestrogens everyone is worried about are found in many vegetables. Most of the hormone stuff you’ll read about soy is dairy industry propaganda.

Justine, does the fermentation in things like tempeh lessen the effects?

  • Yes, it makes it more easily digestible.

Ah ha! I thought it was thyroid! Thanks alisonwonderful for the link! I don’t eat soy, and now I certainly won’t in the future! Other than a splash of Braggs (when the bottle is done, I am swithcing to Nama shoyu) once in a while, soy is now on my ‘poison’ list!

  • Why drink dead soymilk when you can have Alive Almond Mylk! Chock full of living nutrients and living good fats! Alix1963 you crack me up & cute kitten!

  • SarahJSarahJ Raw Newbie

OK - thanks everyone – almond milk it is. I knew there were reasons :)

  • Luna blu: Nama shoya is also made from soy – unfermented, but still soy.

Oh, I’m sorry, Justine. I meant the hormone problems. I thought you meant fermented soy products posed less of a problem.

FuzzyWuzzy, I’d love to use some sort of almond milk but the price of almonds is far beyond me. To be honest, mostly I just wanted some type of creamer, like a couple of ounces a day’s worth. I tried to make mylk from sunflower seeds, but what I made was hideous, and I mean really hideous, gag.(thank you for the compliment on my real kitten and her faked eyes:-D )

  • Has anyone tried Grain Mylk from sprouted organic grains? I’ve seen it posted on other sites, but have never tried it. Much more economical, but it it tastes crappy, what’s the point?

  • Hi SarahJ, I am reading a book: The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food. Yes, I’ll admit it is biased towards the anti-soy side but the facts speak for themselves. It has really changed the way I think about soy.

  • Luna bluLuna blu Raw Newbie

Ya I know! But for the amount I use, I can live with that! Hopefully;)

in addition to the health problems mentioned, it is also now a big problem for the rain forest. south america’s “soy king” is now making way for crops. even the initial deforestation for cattle is being replaced with soy.

  • Vanilla Soy Milk is a dream on breakfast cereal.

    An evil, death-dealing dream.

I suggest almond or rice milk as a substitute.

Or raw cow/goat/sheep milk (if you're non-vegan like me)

    Personally I drink silk soymilk.

You get 7 grams of soy protein per serving which I have found helpful because sometimes even though you have reaserched a raw vegan diet you are still not getting all of the things that you need in order to be healthy. Each person has there own opinion on soy products, however I think it is personally up to you and wether or not you feel right.

  • Mike Adams "The Health Ranger" came out with info regarding very negative reports on current Silk products, since the company was acquired by new owners:
