What should I eat? I am so hungry!!!!!!

AVLAVL Raw Newbie

OK so can someone tell me what I am doing wrong, because I was SO HUNGRY today, like to the point of passing out. This is what my day looked like:

5:00am woke up and jumped rope for 1 hour 10 min

7:00am smoothie with 2 scoops of VEGA powder, 10 strawberries, 1 banana & handful of spinach, 1/4 buckwheat porridge (measured dry)

9:00am apple & Cliff bar (why I only eat in case of emergencies)

10:00am 300ml fruit juice because my blood sugar was very low and I was on a field trip with my students, and that's all they had there

12:40pm salad: 1 zucchini, 1 tomato, 1 mango, 1/4 avocado, 1/4 large carrot, 1/4 red pepper. Smoothie with 2 scoops of VEGA powder & 5 strawberries

3:45pm 2 large apples

5:00pm 1/2 cup edamame beans & 7 strawberries

Now it's 5:45pm and I feel like I haven't eaten all day. So I still have dinner left to eat. I usually eat dinner between 7:30pm-8:00pm. I am trying SO HARD to be mostly raw (except for my porridge in the morning), but I just kept feeling so hungry and light headed all day because nothing seemed to fill me up. What should I do? What should I have for dinner?

Days like these don't happen too often (thank goodness), but I don't know what to do when I have days when I am super hungry all day long.

SO I just had dinner, and was full for about 10 minutes, but now I am STARVING again! Here's what I had:

Salad: 2 tomatoes, 1/2 avocado, mixed greens, 1 cucumber, 1/2 yellow pepper, parsley, 1 orange, juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 lime

2 cups of broccoli & cauliflower (pureed in food processor) with tomato sauce.

    ARGH!!!!! I'm so frustrated!

Honestly, I would skip the powders and bars (except if you have no time for anything else, nothing else sounds good) and go for some fresh, ripe melons and/or bananas. The sweet fruit will up your calories, and in my opinion, is the healthiest, most nutrient-rich way to be raw.

AVL~ I hear you and feel your frustration... When I look at your munchies, I don't see any seeds or nuts... If I don't eat hemp, pumpkin, sunflower or chia seed in my smoothies or alone as a snack, I too starve... They aren't high in fat like nuts... Is there a reason you don't ingest them???

  • I agree with Waterbaby, you need a bit more in the way of nuts and seeds. Not a ton, just a few. I use Nutiva Hemp Protein powder and I feel it fills me up better than any other powder I've tried. I mix it with almond milk and greens powder and sometimes fruit.

I think the almond milk would be a great addition. Also try adding some chia seeds to your diet. I mix 1/3 cup dry seeds with 2 cups of water and it makes a gelatinous mass. I eat about 2 Tbsp. of the gel mixed in a smoothie or with water. This really helps fill the hole:)

    Here's a link for the chia: http://www.therawfoodworld.com/product_info.php?products_id=1002259

    Hope that helps,

    Nicole

when i was first raw i had to have a huge salad and flax crackers and a smoothie for lunch. and i was losing weight. eat more! of whatever you like! veggies don't have tons of calories so you'll need to add veggie juice or smoothies or seeds to add more calories. yes fruit too will work although try to have it on it's own.

  • TheFitnessFreak said "Hope that helps"

    that defiantly helps me..

i'm a pedicaber and i have been looking for something like this for a while...thanks

but i'm not going to have plants growing out my back am i?

  • AVL,

As a raw vegan while in the military, I can assure you I have faced just about every dietary challenge out there! I am going to have to agree with the recommendation for some nuts and seeds. When I was in Affrica I was eating primarily fruit, and due to my activity level and the heat, I was always starving. I added a few glasses of almond milk, and raw hemp powder to my daily diet, and my hunger subsided. I eat a lot of avocados too when they are available, mostly because they are my favorite food ever! Good luck.

Add a couple more bananas to your smoothies and waaaaay more fruit during the day.

  • AVL,

Although I dont 100% agree with the nuts and seeds thing, since your eating avocado which is a fat, you may want to give it a try. Personally, I dont think you are eating enough food. Since you are a teacher (i believe) you probably dont have enough time during the day, but if you get a chance while home, put your food into a cron-o-meter or my favorite nutridiary.com. You will quickly see that fruits and veggies dont have alot of calories, and according to what you listed as eating you probably didnt eat more than 500-700 calories. Eat More!! Yesterday I ate 2 cantaloupe, 2 cup of watermelon, 4 bananas, 10oz bag of cherries with i freshly squeezed lemon smoothie, a salad of spinach, two cloves garlic, one sweet onion, 4 plum tomatoes, green pepper, cucumber (peeled) and some liguid braggs (as dressing). and I still didnt eat enough! I only consumed around 900 calories! But I am active and it just is not enough to keep me going.

Try to drink a big green smoothie in the morning will give you alot of energy and make you feel fuller longer, and then add more fruits that you like!!

    Good Luck!!

    Good luck!

  • Oh and i should also mention that I typically dont start eating until Lunch (noon) to give my body a rest from digestion... and I fell asleep around 8! So that was only 8 hours of eating. :-)

I also disagree with adding nuts and seeds or eating any of those regularly, but it's up to you. See how you feel!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!!!!!!

So I went to the store today and bought chia seeds, hemp seeds, almonds and goji berries. The thing is that I'm trying to lose 5-10lbs so I don't know how much and how often I should eat seeds/nuts. Could anyone tell me?

Today was another one of those days :( For breakfast I added another banana but that didn't seems to make a difference. My breakfast was 600 calories and then I had a cliff bar 1 hour later because I was still hungry. Like, seriously...that very rarely happens. And it's not "that time of the month" either...I just finished.

I kinda "cheated" too. I had a lot of crackers (like crappy kinds...Ritz) & almond butter at work. I feel so bloated and guilty. ARGH :(

I just want to continue eating raw vegan because I LOVE IT, but I've just been feeling so hungry.

  • AVLAVL Raw Newbie

Oh ya, I bought ground flax seeds too

  • First of all don't feel guilty,

The true idea behind going raw is doing what's good for your body, sometimes the transition can be difficult, and we are not trying to discourage you from being raw by you being hungry all the time, or getting you sick.

Almond butter is great, you can make/buy it raw is well, so if that is something that helps, stick to it. As far as how much seeds/nuts you should be eating depends on your activity level really. I get most of mine in the morning to get a strong fuel base for the day, and then do fruits throughout the day and get my veggies in at night. Also, I'm curious if you are transitioning from vegan to raw, or from veg, or omnivore. If your diet was heavy in meat or cheese prior to you going raw, weight loss will be emanate pretty much regardless of how much seed and nuts you eat.

Lobo is right about the quantity of food you are eating. When I went from vegan (about 5 meals a day) to raw (about 8 meals a day) i just had to keep eating glorious fruits all day (it so terrible) :-) People all need different amounts of food at different times of the day, so there is no set amount you should be eating. The beauty of eating sooooo healthy, is that you can eat when your hungry and it is fairly hard to become "fat."

Making some raw hummus and snaking on that throughout the day with some peppers might work for you too.

Good luck, keep us posted on your progress!

    rubber duck,

Thank you for your input. I started transitioning 2.5 weeks ago. I was vegetarian for 14 years, but ate eggs and fish. I started eating chicken, turkey, (no cheese) 3 years ago. So I wouldn't say I was eating a lot of meat, but a bit every day.

I'm also trying to recover from an eating disorder (ED-NOS) and exercise compulsion, so eating a lot can be very scary for me. I am fairly active every day, but eating foods with a lot of fat can cause me to feel very anxious. But

I know that I need to eat fat and that good fats won't make me gain weight.

Also, I absolutely LOVE fruit, so I'm not worried about eating that.

My brother has been raw vegan for a few years now and has also given me pointers on how to get started, so at least I have someone to look up to in my family (too bad he lives far away).

  • AVL,

I am glad you have the support of family, always a plus, and it is too bad he doesn't live closer to you. Based on your exercise routine, and past protein intake, I would definitely incorporate some seeds like hemp or chia (I prefer hemp, but that is just my preference). Your exercise compulsion is definitely the main issue you are facing here. I had a girlfriend who also had an ED/EC, and she was a veg (lot of cheese and eggs) when we first met, tried the raw thing with me, and too was starving. We started incorporating Avocados, Yams, Sweet potatoes, and cashew butter into her diet, and then some hemp seeds in her morning smoothies, and that seemed to to the trick. Fruit is awesome, don't get me wrong, but with your activity level, you could eat fruit until you are blue in the face and never fill up. Keep on eating them though, great staple in your diet.

Let me know how everything works out, we'll do some more brain storming in a few days if you are still having problems. Good Luck

    Thanks Rubber Duck,

Well for dinner, I kind of had a mish mash of things, because I felt like eating a lot of different things. I had: 1 mango, 1 orange, 1/4 cantaloupe, 1/4 avocado, goji berries, tried some chia seeds in a tiny amount of buckwheat porridge. Man, it looks like nothing "matches", but it was juicy, sweet and good!

I'll try to put some hemp seeds or chia seeds in my porridge tomorrow morning and see if it keeps me full longer.
