I’m a music nut and want to work in the music industry. I’m mostly a folkie and a Celtophile…I am obsessed with Celtic folk and folk rock. By Celtic I mean the traditional folksongs like working songs (sea shanties and such), airs and storytelling songs from the British Isles, as well as traditional Celtic instrumental music like the fiddle jigs and reels and such. I sing and play bodhran, an ancient Irish drum, as well as a mediocre guitar, a wee bit of piano, and have dabbled in tinwhistle, fiddle, and bouzouki (basically a giant mandolin, only an octave lower…originally a Greek instrument but was adapted into Irish tunes).
My absolute favourite band is Celt folk rock band from Newfoundland (has a long history of Scottish/Irish/English settlement, and pirates!) called Great Big Sea! A close second is another Celtic folk rock band called Gaelic Storm, which occasionally incorporates some world elements into their music…like didgeridoo! (I just love saying the name of that instrument!) I also absolutely love Flogging Molly, an Irish punk band, as well as some other random punk/folk-punk.
I’m a huge fan of other folk artists like Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls, and older stuff like Bob Dylan. I also like newer bluegrass…which is really just Celtic music after it developed in Appalachia. And while she’s not really a folk artist, I love love love Tori Amos, at least her older stuff. I still listen to Little Earthquakes on a regular basis.
I trained in musical theatre and classical music, so I still listen to that from time to time too.

I love a variety of music but my hot spots right now are: crystal singing bowls, meditation, chanting, nature sounds, birds, the wind and windchimes (I have a cute little collection outside my bedroom window)...classical ballet music…
I am a huge fan of WORLD music… songs from African, India, Middle East, Italian and French Cafe kinds of songs…
When I am in the mood to get crazy … Riot Grrrl… hardcore punk in your face feminist fury stuff.
and this one shocks a lot of people but some hardcore dirty RAP… i love hip hop culture, especially break dancing, that is an art!
Mixed amongst the songs are many that are Celtic and Scottish. For me, it was easiest to sort by artist. Enjoy the adventure if you choose to explore the site.
Dont’ forget about SLACKER.com .. Its a great radio station for people who love music you can go on and create your own stations to your liking.. ITs great.. I love the CHILL radio station on there its soothing but yet has enough beats and drums to keep you up beat.
ardesmond2 – I might just have to check out slacker.com. I’ve been grooving on a lot of downtempo lately. Nothing says summer to me more than listening to some Zero 7 while sitting out in the sun, enjoying the warmth and the light!
I have very eclectic tastes, driven by my moods. My favorite band, for the last 10 years or so, has been Jamiroquai, and I still listen to them on a regular basis. Music with a cause that makes you want to dance – what’s not to love?
Genres I dabble in include: old-school brit pop, alternative, industrial, EBM, synthpop, 80s pop, hip-hop, trip-hop, downtempo, acid jazz, acoustic guitar… and so on and so forth. I’ve never been very musically-inclined, but one day, I would love to learn how to play an acoustic guitar. I find that instrument to sound incredibly soothing, while electric guitar just drives me up the wall.
I love Erik Sanko, Skeleton Key, and Havergal.
Other than that you guy should check this San Francisco based band out, I hear their bassist is rockin! And she’s super sexy :P

Pandora.com is another really good create your own radio station type of sites. You type in artists or songs that you like and it gives you similar songs. Its also really fun to get to know new artists – for free!
Anyway, I’m into classical music of all shapes and sizes (though I shy away from a lot of serialist works). Opera and musical theatre are my passion and one or both will be my eventual career path, I just don’t know which yet. Other than that, I love folksy singer-songwritery kind of music- one person, one guitar or piano, good lyrics. That sort of stuff. And I like Celtic music, too! The music from that area has the most lovely lovely harmonies. I listen to the Wailing Jennys a lot for the Celt sound. But I love music! All kinds! I’ve been known to get down to a dirty beat in my day… LOL!

I played drums through college but havent as much as tooted a whistle since then…i liked my snare drum but also enjoyed other percussion instruments like bodhran, claves, whip, marimba and timpani. i had to memorize all my music on marimba and chimes as i never did learn to read it….can you believe not one band director caught on? id either have a friend play it over and over or id number and sequence the notes on the keys…..grin….lately ive been listening to a new station here in san diego called the walrus, 50 and 60s and 70s great old stuff! my cd collection has everythng from slaughter, to anna nalick…with pit stops in micheal buble’,soundracks like les mis, and dances with wolves and moulan rouge.. ok so im a bit ecclectic…. I listen to music rarely compared to most of the people i know….its not background for me…if im listening to it i want to hear it…ya know? like when im at the ocean, i dont want to hear my ipod over the waves, i want to hear the waves….
Thank you RawDance! I would love to have a listen to some of the meditation type music you mentioned. I like more world stuff too, especially drumming from Africa and the Middle East. I’m planning on getting a djembe and learning drumming from both areas at some point.

Rawoperasinger-high five on Wailin’ Jennys and musical theatre! Squee! If you like Wailin Jennys, you should check out The Duhks. They’re a Canadian folk band with elements of Celtic, bluegrass, gospel, and blues. Excellent band, on of my faves. What are some of your fave musicals? I never got into opera as much, though I did do classical vocal training.
omshanti – Yay! Do you like Crooked Still? They’re an AMAZING Boston-based young bluegrass (maybe altgrass?) band. I highly recommend them! I like native Aussie music…I made a didgeridoo out of PVC pipe and beeswax that I can make some amusing noises with…still working out that one. :)
I do have some more eclectic things in my library too besides folk, though different types of folk (Celtic, bluegrass, Americana, old school country) do make up the bulk of it. I like quirky folk rock bands like Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and Moxy Fruvous. I like classic rock and classic folk rock like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. I have some random hard rock/”cock rock” in my iTunes, like a few AC/DC tunes and such. I also love swing and some big band like Frank Sinatra, and used to swing dance a little in high school, I miss it! Some other random stuff like Etta James too. I have some darker music too, I’m not really sure how you’d classify it…folk metal, classical/opera metal? Like Apocolyptica (a bunch of classical string players who play, like amazing arrangements of Metallica..really amazing) and Nightwish (very epic sounding metal/film music with an opera singer)...Rawoperasinger, you should check em out! And some kinda poppy punky dark emo rock like Evanescence and My Chemical Romance. (I’m so pop culture-challenged, I don’t even know what the name of that genre is!)
I like punk alot and am trying to expand more beyond folk punk like Flogging Molly & The Pogues and pop punk like Green Day, tho they’re all huge faves of mine. I think punk and folk are very much the same. They are music for, and by the people, and very often protest music, and music of truth that tells stories about real people.
As an offshoot of that, I’m a huge fan of the queer punk musical, Hedwig and The Angry Inch, and regularly listen to the cast album and movie soundtrack with my other bands. I also love The Rocky Horror Show! Apart from Rent, the rest of my taste in musicals tend toward the more legit, if grossly overdone stuff, like Les Mis and Phantom.
I love traditional Irish Music. I have seen Gaelic Storm and Great Big Sea at the Celtic Fest back in Chicago and Milwaukee when I lived back there.
Have you ever heard of The Muck Brothers? They are more of a local Chicago band but I think they used to tour. I used to go to see them everytime they played in Chicago. I have a CD out I believe. Really energetic traditional Irish stuff!.
If you like the traditional Appalachian stuff, you would like the movie the “The Song Catcher”. It is sort of the story about how the Appalachian music was discovered – don’t know if the story is the true story or not but has lots of Appalachian music in it.

Queenfluff- YAY GREAT BIG SEA FANS! Teehee.:) I’ve loved them for years, met all the guys quite a few times and actually ended up being good friends with one of their audio engineers through their web board…where I also met my now ex-bf (he’s still a great guy). And the audio engineer introduced me to another music board, where I met my now fiance! So I owe alot to GBS, in a roundabout way. I actually went to visit St. John’s, Newfoundland a few years ago…it is a breathtaking, heartbreakingly beautiful place. Without a doubt my favourite place on earth. And there is SO MUCH MUSIC there…all the pubs, the coffeeshops, buskers all over the streets, guitars carved into the sidewalk, it’s unbelievable.
I’ve hung out with the guys from GS too, I ran their merch table when they were here in Atlanta a little over a year ago, and drank in the pub with them afterwards. They are an absolute hoot!
I’ve not heard the Muck Brothers, but the name actually does sound very vaguely familiar. I’ll have to look em up! And that movie as well! I love Appalachian music, it’s so much the great great grandchild of Celtic.

You would never guess it, not even people who know me would guess, but I listen to heavy metal. Mostly gothic style heavy metal. Some of my favorites are Tristania, Opeth, Nightwish, In Flames, Lacuna Coil, Evanesence, and Therion. I also listen to some really cheesy, nerdy, fantasy based heavy metal like Battlelore and Dragonforce. It seriously awakens my soul.

Quiora – my fiance loves gothic metal…Mightwish, Lacuna Coil, and Epica are some of his favourites. When we first got together he sent me a bunch of Nightwish songs and gained a real appreciation for a genre I knew next to nothing about. There’s quite a bit of Nightwish I really enjoy now. And I’ve always loved to sort of aesthetic surrounding it all…I always say I wanted to be goth in high school, but the clothes were too expensive. :p And I listened to too much folk music! :)
Oh, I forget to mention what other kind of music I like too. :)
Favorites are The Alarm, U2, and Sting. Anything 80s pretty much ( hey, I grew up in the 80s – can’t help it). Including some of what my bf calls “butt rock” – like Def Leppard. Also reggae, any kind of 60s hippie music (yes, the Dead too) or funky disco.
I used to be regular at the new wave/goth clubs back when I lived in Chicago. Ah, the good old days. :)
Hmm, maybe it would be easier to say what I don’t like?(hip hop, rap and country)

I was forced by my mother to play piano when I was younger. I did play faux drums in High School for class and I took guitar for a while but I guess I had practicing because I never stuck with it.
Branwyn-Yeah I actually was “a goth” in high school, but I stopped caring about the clothes and makeup when I really started to simplify my life and material possessions. However, since I stopped dressing goth, I’ve gained a much deeper appreciation for, and broadened my tastes for gothic music. I think I kept and improved upon what was most important about the lifestyle for me (the music) and got rid of what wasn’t important for me (the clothes).
