“Killer Whales Are Most Toxic Arctic Animals, Study Reports”: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/12…

The marine mammals carry distressingly high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, and brominated flame-retardants.

“This new killer whale research reconfirms that the Arctic is now a toxic sink,” said Brettania Walker, toxics officer with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) International Arctic Programme. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Article from 2005, but it’s still very relevant today.. because nothing has changed. Folks haven’t stopped using PCBs, pesticides. Buy organic, support climate change measures. And think positive. Maybe something will change someday…

I remember this story and how the PCBs are in the whale’s breast milk and causing deformities in their male offspring.

This is so sad. It is bad enough that we are not taking care of our own but to bring the rest of the creatures down with us just ads to our collective crimes.

This is my husband’s area of expertise. He lead a five year study from 2000-2005 sampling sperm whales around the equator for toxins. They’re still analyzing the data, but one of the most alarming findings was the fact that some of the hot spots were remote islands in the Pacific – high in things like fire retardants and heavy metals like chromium. He likes to point out that many toxins bio-amplify up the food chain and guess who’s at the top? Whales and us. Thanks for reminding us, Winona.
