Weight Down, but Clothes Fitting Tighter (???)

Hello Everyone, I am relatively new to the Raw Food Lifestyle and am experiencing something very odd. I have actually lost about three pounds since I started eating raw, but I feel heavier and my clothes are fitting tighter. How can this be? Has anyone else ever experienced this?

  • Sounds to me like you're retaining water. I have limited knowledge about raw food as well, and I can't imagine any way that could happen with raw food unless you're sensitive to salt and have been eating *a lot* of spinach.

Hopefully, someone else can help you a little better. This will at least get you listed on the home page.

Do you work out a lot? Whenever I started cycling and running, my legs got more musclar and defined so my jeans got too tight. I guess when my legs were more flabby, they could fit in jeans better, but muscle is solid so I think it's harder to squish it in.

  • It sounds like rainy is on the right track, but the other way around. We need to keep in mind that coming from a SAD diet- wether it involves meat, veggie, or vegan- we will have water retention if we are eating exytotoxins like salt.

It is said to be the first 10lbs that we lose is water weight. It could be that you've actually lost most of your water weight but possibly put on some real weight, which has lead you to be overall lighter. Strange huh?

I cant say much seeing the fact is you haven't given me any information to work off. All you said was raw diet- not stating raw primal, raw vegan, raw began, high fat, low fat, 100% raw etc. YOu never said if you eat no exytotoxins, if you don't do oils, what you ate before you went raw, how you treated yourself before you went raw (drugs, rest, sunshine, whole foods, love, etc) how you treat yourself raw, if you excercise, how much you excercise, when you eat, how much you eat, how many times you eat; and the list goes on!

I am just simply stating this could be a possibility

  • Hmmm, all very interesting. I'm sure it's a combination of a lot of things and I think my increased exercise has probably helped change the shape of my body which would account for the tightness of the clothes in some areas. I remember after a few days of being 75-80% Raw Vegan, I noticed my skin felt very elastic, as if it were a soggy rubber-band that had snapped back into form. It must be a result of all the water I am getting now.

    Thanks everyone!!

I also think that raw fruits and vegetables are much bulkier in the digestive system so they physically take up more room than say cheese or meat. I've read in beauty magazines that models stay away from fruit and vegs when they need to have a flat stomach. Being full of good stuff could make your pants tighter while you weigh less.

so true danifon- it takes a lot more bulk to get your calories- i think dr d gave the example of 55 heads of lettuce to equal a couple slices of pizza.

keep on keepin' on catbird- sometimes starting out has weird effects, but the good stuff lays ahead of you.

  • daniefon. that is really interesting about the fruits/vegs adding more bulk. it could explain my pooch that i usually have. although i don't really mind it i was always a little confused why it was there.

  • catbird- are you consuming any nuts/seeds? I tend to feel bloated when I eat nuts. Otherwise, I feel light as a feather especially when I drink fresh juice or smoothies!

  • Yeah, I am consuming a lot of seeds and nuts too (all raw/unsalted, of course). I am still trying to figure out which amounts of everything is best for my body (I'm waiting for it to tell me). I've been trying to balance my meals daily to equal 1/3 nuts & seeds, 1/3 fruits and 1/3 veggies. I use to be a big-time calorie counter, but have since stopped (you can imagine how scary caloric intake can seem at first with this diet rich in nuts.

It's a little frightening because I basically just have to have faith that my body will adapt and even itself out (cravings, water retention, etc.). I am wondering about how long it takes to gain some normalization. Anyone?

  • Hi Catbird. I can only tell you from experience. I noticed a slight bloatedness when I consumed a lot of nuts. And this was in the beginning of my raw days when I first got into it (going into 6 months now). I started making gourmet raw food with lots of raw cashews, pine nuts, and macademia. I consumed these nutty meals once every day. It sat heavy in my tummy and seemed harder to digest. So I cut down the nut intake and upped my fruit and greens by making tons of juices and smoothies and eating tons of fruits whenever I felt hungry. I did lose a lot of weight so I just picked up on snacking a handful of nuts throughout the day. Just listen to your body. If you feel like something is off, try something different. It seemed to work for me. Good luck :)

  • Thanks, Sheik! I'm going to try cutting back on the nuts for the next few days and see if it makes a difference. I'll let everyone know how it goes :)
