web page color?

TomsMomTomsMom Raw Newbie

Kandace and Ray, I really loved the old web page colors. They were so pretty. Will the pages all be plain white from now on?:(

Hi TomsMom, The site should look pretty much exactly the same (color, layout). Would you mind refreshing (or even shift refreshing) your browser. I’m wondering if somehow the browser didn’t load the stylesheet. If this doesn’t work, can you let us know what web browser you are using. Thanks!

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

I have colors on all pages except the beginning Forums page and the search is gone. How do you refresh your browser?

Plus why are the threads not updating on the home page? when I posted this it was not updated so i came back in and added this part.

BTW thanks for all your hard work. I know it can be frustrating when you are trying to update programs and make changes and everyone is asking questions. I really love this site. thanks so much.

  • TomsMomTomsMom Raw Newbie

Hi, Kandace. I did a cache purge and restart, and still don’t get all of the pages in color. I know I have a cruddy way of explaining things. Some pages are normal and some are white without color, pics or tabs.

For example, the home page is fine. But the forum main page is all white. Each catagory page in the forums is also white, but the individual topics are normal. The white pages don’t have the ads or the tabs in the upper right corner.

    http://goneraw.com/forums I see a white page

    http://goneraw.com/forums/food-preparation Again, I see a white page

http://goneraw.com/forums/food-preparation/topi… Okay, I now see a regular page

I’m assuming the problem is on my side; I’m just now sure what to do. I mean, it’s not going to kill me. I just thought the new layout didn’t have those soft, pretty greens and nice design.

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

I still have the same displays as TomsMom, both on my laptop and my desktop. I’m using Internet Explorer and Refreshing (with or without Shift) does not change anything.

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

I’m just curious. Is anyone other than Internet Explorer users still getting the “white skeleton style” Forums page, or is this unique to IE?

  • TomsMomTomsMom Raw Newbie

emtpdmom, you made me think that maybe I should try to launch Firefox. Well, I can see everything with the Firefox. But I still have troubles with the IE, dang!

  • JoyceHJoyceH Raw Newbie

I’m having the same problems. I am getting that funny white screen when I click on Forums. There’s no searh option and no back arrow option. I’m using Internet Explorer here at work. At home I have firefox so I see what it looks like at home (if I have the energy later to log on)

    thanks!

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

It is Internet Explorer. But it is not the users fault – it is the programming. I have refreshed endless – does nothing.

I have the same issue as everyone else. When I use Firefox though, it is back to the way it used to be. But I like IE and have all my toolbars already set up in there and don’t want to change.

My guess is that whom ever tested the new changes did not check them out in IE unfortuately. There is something missing in code perhaps and it was tested on other browser but not IE. All browsers unfortunatley do not handle all code the same.

Some browsers have problems with certain programming languages and you often have to change settings (for the programer to do) or put in some special code – sometimes there is no way to fix it. This should be able to be fixed though – I hope it gets fixed soon.

    FYI Y’all…

From the MAJOR Update Today. Any Problems? thread, Ray posted:

If you’re on Windows, switch! No, I’m just kidding. But Internet Explorer is known to have so many problems that I don’t even test this site on it that often. We very highly recommend you use either Firefox or Safari. They’re both free, and faster and safer than IE.

Unless Ray has changed his testing procedures, he focuses on making the website work on Firefox and Safari.

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

BlueDolphin – Thanks for posting that. I must have missed it.

I still have to say hmmmm and sigh though – I mean, it worked fine before the update on IE so I don’t see why it should be different now? I mean, the things are that missing on the IE version of the forum section now are mostly formatting things. Except for the people being shown online. These formats showed up before but why not now – the other pages still have the formatting. I am just a bit confused by this.

I am not a expert on the following but when you look at the source code (you can do by doing View Source) the formatting stuff seems to coded in CSS (casading style sheets), html and javascript. All of things should work fine in IE. When I look at it in Firefox, it doesn’t seem like there were not really any “formatting” or “style” changes. The changes appear to be functional – behind the scenes, pages are working smoother. I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes though.

I know I am probably sounding picky but I hate the idea of having to switch to firefox just to get a better view of the site.

It is sort of funny to me because I don’t like Firefox for similar reasons as Ray stated about IE – there are certain version of programming languages that won’t work right in Firefox. I had to change programming languages on my website because it couldn’t be viewed in Firefox which was a little disappointing to me because I had a really nice site set up in a more complex code than just html – which is what I have it at now. So, I can’t (right now) set up a shopping site because it won’t work right on Firefox – which I had all set up before(works great on IE though!). Ugh.

Safari only works on Macs which I don’t have. I sort of have my own beefs with some Apple products like ITunes because you can’t move any music you purchased in their ITunes store to a non IPod Mp3 player. I won’t get an IPod so I stopped using ITunes altogether for this reason. I know most people are crazy about Apple products but I have to say I am not one of them.

So, anyhow, enough slightly off topic rant me by (sorry guys but I am programmer so I have my little beefs about these things too) – I think all the the browsers have their problems. IE has its problems too but I think it will be unfortuate when newbies come to the site through IE (the most popular browser) and are faced with a confusing looking Forum section with no way to navigate to the pages like main and recipe pages from there. :(

Just my little two cents there….

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

Thanks, Bluedolphon. I guess the reason we missed this one is because it’s from March of this year. That’s before my GoneRaw days. Queenfluff, thanks for the explanation. I’m on a Vista laptop (Dell). Do you have a recommendation for which one I should download? Will there be any problems if I also keep IE installed?

EDIT: It’s also very interesting that I’ve never had a problem with any other web page. Internet Explorer is the only browser I have ever used, both personally and at school. If I were new to GoneRaw, I’m afraid the Forums page would be a big turnoff for me, and I might not stay with what I now know is a wonderful site.

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

It is bad. There is no more search to look up peticular subjects that may have already been discussed.and it is the only page that looks that way.

  • drgonflydrgonfly Raw Newbie

Ok, well I am downloading firefox on my home computer, won’t be able to do it at work, so will just be stuck with forums that way. Because I have dial up it says it’s going to take 2 hours. So I’m going to jog & get my day started. Hopefully it will download & I can see things like they used to be. I really miss the search in forums.

  • BluedolfinBluedolfin Raw Newbie

drgonfly~ Upon Ray’s recommendation I started using Firefox. I really like it. I’m having less “issues” then when I was exclusively using IE. There are some features I really like in Firefox like “as you go” spellcheck (much needed for me). I can’t remember what else I like better then IE since I very rarely use IE anymore. Have fun downloading Firefox. :)

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

    emptdmom -

You can have both Firefox and IE on your computer. I have them both too. I have a Compaq laptop with Windows XP. There will not be any issues. I only downloaded Firefox to check my website on their once because people said it didn’t work on there and that was when I realized that Firefox is not perfect either.

One thing that I love about IE is that it has the automatic phishing detection. I don’t see that as an option on Firefox (and I am NOT going to test a phishing site to find out!). The other week I foolishly trusted a web site I didn’t know and IE blocked it as a phishing site which I was very happy about.

I think there are some people who just don’t like IE because it is a Microsoft product and some programmers don’t like Microsoft. I am not one of those programmers. I think other products are great too but and people have the choice of what they want to to use and I like IE. I actually used to use Netscape on my first computer. I thought it was pretty nice at the time but IE works better for me.

It is like with search engines too – my bf gives me a hard time because I like Yahoo as opposed to Google because Google is so popular. Well, I just prefer Yahoo – I like the layout etc. Google seems so plain to me. I do prefer Google Maps though because they include public transport on there. So I think it is all personal preference too – some people are willing to put up with certain things and not others.

For me, I live about a mile from Yahoo, Google and Microsoft so I guess I can pick what I want. :)

BlueDolphin – What is the spell check for? When you type in things in the search? Yahoo does that too.

drgonfly – You poor person! I think I would shoot myself if I still had to use a dialup. I remember those days.

  • drgonflydrgonfly Raw Newbie

Queenfluff-luckily it only took about an hour to download. Living out in the middle of no where can have it’s drawbacks (I have to drive 1/2 a mile to have our cell phone work!), but wouldn’t trade it for anything. We are expecting DSL in our area next summer & can’t wait! What Bluedolphin means about spell check is that it checks your typing like when I am responding now. I love it! Right now I’m in IE, so I hope everythings spelled right!

And the forums look right in firefox too!

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

Have Firefox installed and all is well. Thanks Queenfluff for sharing your expertise.

  • TomsMomTomsMom Raw Newbie

This really needs to be tested on IE. I’m not an expert in any way, but IE is the most popular browser and any site needs to run nicely on IE, Firefox and Safari. We also test for other browsers. Everyone has it’s favorite baby as far as browsers are concerned, but it irks me to be told to switch browsers for this reason.

Also, I don’t see the reason for problems with IE being inherently “bad” to use as a browser for this or any site. I hope everything gets straightened out; I know it can be a pain in the butt for a while, but the site is really a very nice site. I love the layout.

  • BluedolfinBluedolfin Raw Newbie

    emtpdmom~ Glad I could be of assistance…

queenfluff~ As drgonfly mentioned, spellcheck is for those of us who have “creative” spelling that might confuse others. The thing I think is really cool with Firefox, is, that while I am typing along, while in Firefox, no matter the page, form, could be a web-based email, etc., I have immediate feedback in the form of a red line under any word that might fall under that creative spelling category. The way the feature works is that if there is a red line under a word, one simply right clicks on the “offending” word and a list of possible properly spelled words displays and one chooses the preferred word. If you have ever worked with MicroSoft’s Office (Word, Excel, etc., as well as other programs with similar functions), you may have used this feature.

Have you every posted and when you reread your post it was gibberish or had mixed up words? I can’t understand how that happens… When I reread my post before hitting the Save Reply button, my post is “perfect”. Then I see it posted on the thread, I can’t believe I left out words or something wacky like that… Now if only Firefox had a “clarity and clear expression” function for all those posts that don’t make sense. Now THAT would be a helpful function…. or maybe a “you don’t REALLY want to post that do you?”... kinda a common sense function. ;)

In the current Firefox version (3.0.1), it does have phishing protection. From Firefox’s help: “Phishing Protection in Firefox is powered by Google”. To get to the anti-phishing option: Click Tools. Select Options. Click Security button. Third checkbox down is “Tell me if the site I’m visiting is a suspected forgery”.

Oh, one more feature I really like in Firefox is the Search feature. It displays at the bottom of the page with options of Next, Previous, Highlight All, Match Case. I really like seeing all the occurrences of the searched for text.

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

I now have Firefox installed, and things seem to be going along quite smoothly. But I’m still MISSING ONE LITTLE ITEM—the “Watch Topic” check box. It also looks like every topic I ever “watched” is now listed in my Profile. Anyone else still have this glitch?

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

Thanks guys for clearing up the searching thingy. For me, I just really like the feature for searching. I am a good speller myself. If you see something spelled incorrectly by me (or I leave words out), I was probably typing too fast! :) My fingers move faster than my brain does sometimes! :)

bluedolphin – I didn’t realize that Firefox has the phishing thing. I didn’t see it on there right away. In IE you can turn it off and on. So, is Firefox made by the Google people then? I wasnt aware of where it came from.

TomMoms – Hear! Hear! I am with ya! Yeah, it really needs to be fixed. It just looks like they left out all the formatting. I don’t see why either. I don’t want to switch either.

emptdmom – Did the Watch Topic feature ever work? I remember using it a few times a while back and I don’t remember it really doing anything. How was it supposed to work? I was expecting to receive email or something when a new reply was posted (that is how it usually works on other sites) but that didn’t happen. I wasn’t even sure where to go to look at my “Watched Topics” – I never sawthem in my profile – so I gave up on that. I can usually remember what threads I am replying too so I don’t worry about it but I do agree it is a handy thing to have for those who want to use it.

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

Queenfluff, I can certainly identify with fingers that move faster than the brain. (I wonder . . . Do my fingers move too fast, or does my brain engage too slowly? W e l l . . . at 6 am, it’s probably a brain issue. Back to the topic.) Because the display on a laptop is small and I have 60+ year old eyes, I usually type my responses in Word and then copy them onto the web page, especially if my response is going to be more than a sentence or two. I started doing this after I got kicked off the page a couple of times when I was in the middle of keying in a reply. I don’t know if it was the site or a specific keystroke I did, but working in Word has solved that problem. I’m also a former English teacher and tend to draft and then rewrite. This is definitely easier than editing from within a web site.

I really like the “Watch Topic” feature. I’m running Firefox, and as of this morning it has not reappeared. From your Profile, when you click monitored posts in the upper left of your screen, a list of all the topics you have checked is displayed. I can still see the list, but I think it must include every topic I ever checked. Without the check box on the thread, there’s currently no way to remove a topic from my monitored / watched list. Neither Kandace nor Ray has posted a response since Monday. Hopefully they will be tweaking the site again this weekend and my beloved “Watch Topic” will reappear.

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

emtpdmom – Hmm, I don’t think I have ever had a Monitored Posts thing in my Profile. I just went to check and nothing anywhere on the page of My Profile. I never remembered seeing one. This is just on the main profile page right? All I have is my text profile, my picture and my recipes. Maybe all mine got erased or something and perhaps it doesn’t show up unless you have some monitered already?

I guess I will have to wait to find out. Yes, I am anxiously waiting for the tweak too. :)

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

Queenfluff, look again. This would be most interesting if I can see it and you can’t. I can see it in Internet Explorer and in Firefox. In the upper left hand corner of your profile, under your name and member since date there should be a line or two, mostly in green—published recipes, forum topics, forum posts (view all / monitored posts). If you click on all you will see a list of all your forum posts. Click on monitored and a list of all the Forums you have checked will appear. You can also go to any member’s Profile and use the all feature to browse through everything they have posted, or see their monitored posts.

  • RawKidChefRawKidChef Raw Newbie

queenfluff, why don’t you use Firefox for Gone Raw and Internet Explorer for everything else? Do you have toolbars and tabs set as far as Gone Raw goes too?

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

emptdmom – Oh, I see now! I thought it was something separate. Yes, I have that thing where it says view all posts and then view all MONITERED posts – right underneath my profile name, date joined etc. Dumbo me! :)

I thought you were saying there is a another link to view posts you are watching. That figured out by me: I must say that I think that is in the wrong place. It seems weird too that other people can view what posts you are monitering. Why would they need to know that? Hmm, just seems like a strange way to do it. ISo yes, I never check that thing. I just looked those and boy I got some old posts there – only a few mind you. But definatley need to delete them. And yes you are right – you can’t removed them there anymore because that box is gone.

  • Blue_EyesBlue_Eyes Raw Master

If we can see the colours on all the other pages why cant they just fix the forums pages? It seems like a lot of trouble to have to download something for one page. How about all the new people coming on who have IE only? Unless they read this page they might think that is the way it is and not no what we used to be able to do with that page that we cannot now. Why are the other pages ok?

  • queenfluffqueenfluff Raw Newbie

RawKidChef – Because I am stubborn! :) (HA HA!) No, just kidding really – but it is partially true. :) It is like TomsMom said – I still think they should fix it for IE and I shouldn’t have to change browsers for one web site. The skeleton doesn’t really bother me that much anymore- I have sort of gotten used to its especially plain charms. :) (being Halloween is around the corner and everything)

I guess if I want to see who is online I can trot over to Firefox to peak. :) I do sort of like that cutesy fox wrapped around the world icon they got – so maybe for the cutesy foxes sake I may use occassionally – don’t want to hurt his little fox feelings. But the stubborn person in me is NOT moving over my bookmarks! :) (I don’t think Firefox could handle all the bookmarks my bf and I have in IE already – I would not want the little fox to have to deal with all my bfs bookmarks!:))

Hmm, if they could further design Firefox with more cute foxes on it I might be more likely to use even more often. I have ideas for them already. :) (fox popups, foxes who fetch your searches… hmmm)

( grin I am being goofy)

  • emtpdmomemtpdmom Raw Newbie

Kandace was aware on Sept 21st that there was an IE problem with the Forums page. There are several posts back and forth between Ray, Kandace and members on this subject. I was not aware of Ray’s preference for Firefox and Safari until someone pointed out one of his posts from the March update. So far I am OK with Firefox, but the I haven’t personalized Internet Explorer beyond my favorites, so it’s not a big deal with me.

Queenfluff, you didn’t say whether or not you were able to locate the “monitored” link on your Profile. I’m just curious. We do know that last weekend there were some individual accounts with glitches, and I hope they still plan on tweaking a little more. I still miss the Watch Topic check box. (Uh Oh. Did I really just say that again? I’m really becoming quite repetitive here.) Well, I’m off to watch a rerun of the debate online. Didn’t get to see it last night.
