Vit.D for dogs?

beanybeeganbeanybeegan Raw Newbie

I asked my vet. if dogs who eat raw should get vit.D. No comment, but that I should take my pet else where. I feed him chicken necks and some processed veggies and fruit. I would like to feed him some ofal, but not able to find. He is an indoor dog and it is getting onto winter here, so Vit.D?

Well, either no one knows, or this question didn’t stay on home page long enough. Am trying again as I couldnt find any answers on the net..

  • Beany- I’ve wondered the same thing myself and I feed my dog raw meat, bones, fruits, and veggeis, too. Right now he gets plenty of exercise outside most days so I haven’t taken the time to research it further yet. But I’ll do that soon and let you know what I find out. I’ll also make a point to ask my holistic and western trained, both, vet soon (who does advocate feeding animals a raw diet).

I find ofal (beef livers, chicken hearts, and chicken gizzards, too) at Whole Foods in small containers in the meat department near where they sell the ground up chicken necks for dogs and small raw dog bones.

I know with people, it generally only takes about 10 to maybe 15 minutes a day for adequate sun exposure (and this is typically just exposing the arms and face of us) for adequate Vitamin D production, so I am assuming it isn’t all that much needed for dogs either. (Assuming is the key word there!) Are you able to take you dog out for a walk of this length most days: even 3-4 times a week maybe?

Yes my dog gets his walk but the Oregon coast is pretty wet in the winter and spring. We are surprised it hasnt started already. So little sun. Glad to hear about Whole Foods having raw dog food. Will pick up the ofal there. I get the whole chicken necks from Azure Standard for 69 cents a pound if I buy 40 lbs. For that price I cleared space in the freezer! I will keep this thread checked. Waiting to hear from you. Thanks….

  • Wow, that’s a good price on the chicken necks! Whole foods sells them ground up for around $1.29 a lb if I remeber right, but then that is also their all natural (no antibiotics or hormones and fed all natural food) meat so I always take that into consideration on the higher price of their meats, too. :)

Well, I Googled Dogs getting vitamin D and what little I saw seemed to mention that dogs do not seem to be able to produce vitamin D cutaneously as well as we and some other mammals do, but that they would normally get most of it through their prey food if they were in the wild. So I’m thinking they are probably doing ok since we are feeding them raw meat. One place also mentioned feeding dairy, but I wonder if that is because the person believes the vitamin D added to pastuerized milk and cheese is allright. Just some thoughts. I’ll try to remember to give my vet a call tomorrow when I get a break at the station tomorrow. Thanks for bringing this up, reminding me to get off my butt and find out about it! ;)

The chicken necks are all the good, none of the bad.smile. So vit.D would be in the meat (?) or the stomach? Maybe the ofal. ?

Beany~ I’m in shock that your Vet said for you to take your pet elsewhere… OMG!!! There are NO words to describe who and what he is!!!

Well, that is Oregon for you. I just let it run off my back, just like the rain. Any way, I have decided not to take him for shots. He can stay home and be a good watch dog or for quick trips he can stay in the car.(when it isnt sunny). To be fair I understand there are a few good vets. in the Portland Metro..

  • Ok, I put a call in to my vet’s office and she’s supposed to email me back. Will let you know when she does and what she says.

Wow, I would have thought Oregon was much more progressive in that field, being as how so many more people seem to be involved in being more green up there. Weird. Good riddance of that vet though. He or she’d probably just try to force pharmaceutical drugs, yearly vaccines, and chemical-laden food on your dog anyway to get their kickbacks. :(

  • Vet just emailed and said as long as we are giving our dogs raw bones and/or bone meal then they should be fine in their Vitamin D levels.

... so evidently the Vitamin D is in the bones. (Bright, aren’t I?!) ;)

*She also said: 750 mg of bone meal for every 50 lb. of body weight (if dog is not getting raw bones with his meat)

Oh Thanks for all your help, and give a big thanks to your vet..

Oregon is not like Washinton. We are a duck of a different color. What ever that may mean. Just like we only have one raw vegan cafe in Portland. OR. Which only has a few common raw foods and the rest cooked vegan. Really Oregon isnt as progressive as the rest of the country thinks.
