Trouble after eating salads. What's wrong?

RawaholicRawaholic Raw Newbie

Hey everybody!

Lately I have really been craving greens, so everyday for the past three days I have been having a huge salad for lunch. But every time after I finish off my salad I get this acid like burning in my throat that doesn't go away until about 2-3 hours after I have eaten. Any idea what this is?

Sounds like acid reflux. I'd google acid reflux disease and check your salad ingredients against the list. Also, sufferers of acid reflux can reduce the episodes perhaps by eating SMALLER quantities. Good luck!

Thank you. I'll be sure to research that before lunch today.

how do green smoothies affect you? They may be a good way to get your greens and are already pre-digested for you.

  • Good point Wichten----I'm curious to now how smoothies would effect her as well.

Well I was gonna suggest using raw ACV on your salads to combat that acid reflux type of feeling as well. And do you drink during eating?? Maybe drink before or after?? IDK I'm not an expert so cannot actually give you a defintie answer. You're not having pain towards the right are you?? that can be sign of galll bladdder and lettuce has been known to aggravate it.

Hope our comments help you out. Let us all know how its going and what you did to remedy the situation.

    Peace

    Lo~

    wichten,

I've had a few green smoothies before (they are SO good) and haven't had any acid like burning after. If I can't fix this problem your right, that would be a great way to consume greens without the discomfort.

    Glamazon,

WHat is raw ACV? And I never drink anything with my meals. I usually have some water 20 minuted before I eat and maybe a glass of water an hour after I eat. The "burning" occurs in the front side of my throat going all the way down almost to my chest.

I'm think i'm going to try eating a very simple salad for lunch with maybe only a couple types of greens, no nuts or seeds, a simple dressing of some oil maybe or lemon juice, and have only two mild veggie toppings (no strong onions or peppers) instead of my usual 4 or 5 and see if maybe I'm combining to many things at once.

Thanks again everyone for your advice!

  • ACV=apple cider vinegar...will sooth the acid thing. IF you have acid reflux it's from a lacking of acid...I know sounds crazy but if you have enough stomach acid you wont feel it at all.

Well GL maybe you do need some added help with the digesting so smoothie def the way to go and oh so tasty!! and the number of things being combined should not be an issue. How many items did you use in your smoothies?? see IDK but ya picking up what im putting down?!! LOL

    Peace

rawaholic about what percent raw are you? This has a lot to do with your whole digestive system. My digestive problems didn't leave until I got up to 98-100% raw. I use lemon juice instead of vinegar. Vinegar causes me digestive problems.

Yep, the number of items combined *can* be an issue, depending on what's being combined.

Pineapple & papaya are both good for digestion. I love pineapple on salad greens! (And smoothies.) ACV is also good for acid reflux, if you are using raw ACV (with the mother). I've seen Eden brand (raw, with the mother) in Whole Foods, but I get mine from Tropical Traditions. (Whole Foods is an hour and a half away for me.)

    http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/organic_apple_cider_vinegar.htm

I make my own "gator aid" with Eden ACV and RealSalt ancient sea salt ( http://www.realsalt.com/ ), in my water. Just a touch of each. Makes it better for the body, easier for it to use the fluids; Alkaline producing Ph, electrolites, and all that yadda yadda...

Tropical Traditions has got great coconut oil, too, by the way. And some really YUMMY coconut water vinegar!!

    :~)

    * Yes, ACV is acidic, but is alkaline producing in the body. As is lemons, limes, and the like.

This morning I drank a quart of water with lemon and sea salt in it and I put everything I usually put in a salad with the exception of mushrooms, onion, nuts/seeds, and I had acid burning but it wasn't as severe and only lasted about 45 minutes or so.

Thanks for the idea pixx. I think tomorrow I'm going to add a little ACV to to my new morning water concoction and have another salad, but with everything I usually put in it. If I don't get the burning then i'll know to consume more alkaline producing items, if I still get burning it might be the onion or maybe ACV and I just aren't meant to be compatible? (grasping at straws here) This is going to take some trial and error.

beeny beegan (love the name by the way), I am about 95%-98% (planning to transition to %100 raw when I graduate from high school in the end of May). I have had some digestion issues in the past due to my ED (which I have just recently overcome three months ago by my almost totally raw vegan transition). I have a gluten intolerance as well as minor IBS (which flaxseed, juices, and green smoothies have been healing). Would that have anything to do with acid burning? This phenomenon is very recent.

Ya know, *supposedly* lemon (which you are already using!) does the same thing in the water as the ACV, but I'll tell you, I don't tolerate it (lemon) well.

Myself, I would be inclined to leave the onion out of the salad. For my body that would be the guess, if I had acid reflux after a salad. The next thing I would try would be eliminating, or at least cutting down, on the amount of fat -- nuts seeds, and possibly dressing, especially if there is sweet in the dressing.

I do use a *small* amount of seeds or nuts in my salad, but do not use fat/oil in dressing. Typically I use orange juice, or mango & tomato blended, or pineapple & strawberry blended, or some such; simple dressings.

Could be your body is transitioning away from some foods you have been used to enjoying (like the onions, maybe?). I got that way with garlic and also spicy foods, back last year. Seems the cleaner my body gets, the cleaner it wants to be. ;)

Ah young one. I am glad you are following the path to wellness. Just had to put that here.

You said something interesting, gluten intolerance. Which means it may be easier for you to get allergic reaction to foods. Especially if you eat then every day. Like spinach every day in a smoothie, etc. Personally I would completely change my morning drink for about a week then try what you are doing now. See what happens.

Thanks concerning the name.. I saw one tonight Obe Raw Kenobi. Way Cool!

I second beany beegan--it sounds like an allergy to me. Reducing the number of ingredients is a great way to help identify the problem. I'm gluten intolerant, and I have found that I can become sensitive to certain foods if I overdo them--though this has gotten better since I've been raw (3+ years now).
