travel smoothie cups

jellibijellibi Raw Newbie

Has anybody found a good travel smoothie cup that they enjoy? I usually use a glass mason jar, but that won’t work for my daughter when she’s at school. She needs something that she can shove in her backpack and not worry about it breaking. I would prefer stainless steel, and I would prefer for it to have a straw. Any ideas?

  • hmmm, for kids perhaps a small wide mouth thermos and then bring a separate straw?

I use my old coffee travel mug.

  • I usually use my Sigg water bottle and put a straw in it. But you have to make sure to rinse it out right after you’re done, or get one of those brushes that you can scrub it with, because my green smoothies leftovers get caked on after a few hours.

I have noticed I need a “real tall” stainless or glass cup, that will fit into the car cup holders. Any ideas?

So far littlegems sounds the best, but do they make a stainless wide mouth thermos? I have been out of the kid thing for a time but I would like to know for my own travels.

beany, Klean Kanteen makes a real tall stainless cup. We also have a small wide mouth thermos and that works well.

Guess I was wondering if any companies have made a smoothie-specific travel cup. I saw one in the move “What Happened in Vegas” and that got me thinking that I wanted one- just not a plastic one.

    hmmmmmmm…

Great Q Jellibi I’ve been using plastic water bottles which I rinse out and re-use. I think I read somewhere about the plastic leeching out though. Does anyone know about this?

I take them with me on the train so like you, glass is not really an option, not ideal with all the pushing and shoving on the tube..

    Are thermo’s leakproof?

    Thanks!

  • Most water bottles leach. In the bottom of the bottle is a triangle and a number inside it. The number indicates if its for continual use.

A 1 is single use only and if there isnt a number then its also single use.

I read somewhere that the only bottles one should use, was bottles with a 4 in it, because they dont leach bisphenol

I use the klean kanteen 40 oz stainless containers, as well as the polycarbonate nalgenes. I am reasonably convinced that the nalgenes don’t leach plastic if you keep them away from high temps and out of the dishwasher. the nalgenes are easier to clean, and effect the taste of the smoothies less, the stainless actually seems to spoil the smoothie much quicker. It is ok for 4-5 hours, but not overnight.

  • I have both a Sigg and a Klean Kanteen. I much prefer the KK, as it has a wider mouth on it, and it's easier to clean out.

I did find a less expensive one (not a KK but similar) for $8.00 + shipping, here: http://www.cgkidz.com/

There is a lot of "action" on this website - they really should tone it down a bit.

  • I'd watch it on the plastic and nalgene. just google nalgene and bisphenol A. Better safe than sorry

I have googled nalgene and bisphenol A. I have also delved a lot deeper than the web sites posting scare propaganda and no real science. I have found some pretty credible evidence that has convinced me this is not a real threat if you are keeping these things away from high temperatures and strong solvents.

Anyway, nalgene makes a non-lexan water bottle as well that does not contain bisphenol A in the same form factor as most of their pretty lexan bottles.

Personally, I prefer glass. An Arizona green tea bottle works quite well. They come in two sizes (16 and 20 ounce). The glass is fairly thick and wrapped in a plastic sleeve. (I don't drink the tea, but have a neighbor who does, so I recycle her bottles for her.) Sometimes I freeze fruit smoothies to take to work. They're just right by lunch. Be sure to leave a little head room for expansion. They also fit in the cup holder in my car.

You would need to rinse, or at least fill the bottle with water, fairly soon after you've finished the smoothie. Otherwise, they can get pretty cruddy. I did manage to clean one by putting some of those decorative glass "beads" like you might put in a fish bowl in the bottle, adding soap and warm water and shaking it. The bottle came absolutely clean.

Typing in "sigg" in the search box at the top of the page yields several other threads on this subject as well. You might also find some helpful ideas there.
