Thoughts on tattoos????

What are some opinions on tattoos? I have wanted a tattoo, but I’m not too sure how I feel about the ink. The idea of the ink seeping into my bloodstream kind of bothers me. I wonder if it will ware down on my body in later years. Are there health concerns involved with them. Are they unhealthy? Is it harmful, in a raw foodist’s eye? I know this may sound silly to most of you, but I just need some opinions. Thanks.

Yes, the ink will get into your system. You may want one today, but what if you change your mind tomorrow? Have you considered temporary tats?

  • Completely raw ink. :0)

ive noticed female pro beach volleyball players on tv have i guess temporary / painted tats and they look fine . plus with a temp you can just keep changing them like jewelry . without any worry about a tat one day maybe becoming diseased skin , i dont know if that happens – thats just what ive always feared possible .

yep. if you know that everything you put ON your skin goes into your system, then the logic follows that anything you put INTO your skin… well, you might as well eat your tattoo really. not terribly yummy sounding.

i wonder if tattoos are ever done with edible inks though…

I know its not raw, but always considered that indian tribes do alot of tattoo-ing and piercings as well..
so… for me, its not just for the punk rocker scene.
    lol

  • Well, I have 5 tattoos which I adore :D of course it gets into your system, it is injected in between deep layers of skin. It really depends on your view of your body!

If our skin is completely renewed every 3 months and we get a whole new body every 7 years, how come tattoos stay on?

  • omshantiomshanti Raw Newbie

zoe, thats a great question, i have two tatts ( i got them 8 years apart) and have not noticed them going away….not that id want them to. While not good for us physically ( i would imagine, i have no proof to share one way or another)mentally for me anyway they make me happy, i designed them myself and got them to commemorate some major events in my life…I love them… as for changeing ones mind after getting a tattoo, try to avoid this by really putting thought into why you want one and what image you would want….otherwise there is laser surgery that leaves a scar and is expensive and painful!

  • Like I said – they are injected deep under the skin between layers, so it takes a long time for your skin to wear down to where it is. I’m pretty sure that is how it works because tattoos DO fade after time.

  • I don’t have any tattoos, I have thought off and on about it for years, but I think about my father. He joined the Navy when he was 16 (during WW II) and got tattoos all over his arms and legs and two very special ones on his cheeks (boy was he embarrassed when me and my 3 sisters discovered those hehe, it was a bathing suit that became somewhat transparent when it got wet). I remember that he wore long sleeved shirts a lot because they embarrassed him in later years and was a source of regret to him. If you do decide to get one, think about what may be going on in your life 20 years from now and where you plan on putting the tat.

  • This is a great topic! I’ve been thinking about this every since going raw myself. I got my first tattoo 13 years ago after my divorce. Then 3 months into going raw I had one done to commemorate my new life as a raw foodist. About a month ago I got another to celebrate my finding my “spirit” again – which I’m positive is because of being raw. My tattoo artist says he uses vegan ink and that I’m not the only one who asks for it. And because, I too, feel that I’m adorning my body in a beautiful way it’s not a problem for me. I’m not ashamed of them, and because I thoughtfully designed, drew and choose the colors for all 3 of mine I don’t think I ever will. I believe it’s all a matter of personal choice and one not to be taken lightly.

  • My concerns aren’t with the fact that I may regret the design later in life. I drew the design many years ago, and find that I still draw it over and over again. I know I would love the design and location 50 years down the road. My concern is more so a health issue. As much as I love tattoos and appreciate everybody’s individual art, I fear the ink being poison to my body.

  • so,so many of my close friends have tattoos,I do not. appealing before as an artist and I guess now too but all in all I personally do not want any, yesagain due to the ink but also don’t want one as an 80 yearold woman,ha! silly!
Not sure what you will choose but after sometime I am very happy not have any due to the ink.

To answer your original question, I

  • I had RA and Fibro before becoming raw. Now I consider myself “healed” from those diseases. Yet any little thing can trigger pain. Like eating just one cooked vegan meal will make my joints hurt for a couple days until the raw food takes over again.

Yet neither of my two tattoos that I’ve gotten since going raw has brought symptoms back. But that’s just one person’s experience.

  • I too have tattoos. For me it is a connection and spiritual reason. I had not thought of the ink in a bad way before. As someone else said, there have been tribes and ancient cultures doing this in some form or another for centuries. It is a foreign matter going into the body, but I have never heard of any health issues from the ink, only from the healing process. Hmmmmm

  • I have a tattoo and plan on getting more in the future. I think they are great if you have reason behind it. The ony I have so far is for memory of a lost loved one, a music note with an angel wing so I know but other can think it’s just a design. I plan on getting a lotus flower and om sign next to symbolize the fact I’ve been taking yoga for 9 years. As I’ve stated I think tattoos are great with meaning.

Well it’s certainly up to yolu! I have one, which I got for my 35 birthday! Wanted it since I was 2o years old! I will be getting another one for my 40th next year!!I totally agree with the meaning thing. Getting one for the sake of it is kinda silly. Make sure it has deep meaning for you, and go for it.

As for it getting into you system, that’s obvious, but if you can live with that, do it!

Ps. They don’t exactly tickle BTW. The outline hurt me like a bugger! Also GO TO A REPUTABLE PLACE!! If you can walk in off the street and get a tat without having to book in advance, it’s probably not a good place. I had to book months in advance for mine. I will probably have to think about booking now for my next one. Thats about 10 months in advance! The guy is that good and professional!!

    I have loads of tattoos….

I like my tattoos. I have 3, planning on two more. The 3 I have now symbolize earth, air and water, and then I still need to find one I really like for fire, and I have a celtic zoomorphic griffin picked out, because my son’s name is Griffin. Then I think I’ll be done. Maybe. ;o)

Yes, they do fade. The dolphin I have started out as a very black tribal design, um, like 17 years ago. By the time I had it redone – about a month ago – it was fuzzy around the edges and GREY. Now it’s been re-outlined, highlighted with some blue and white, and I had some stylized ocean waves added around it and I think it’s just gorgeous.

I really don’t know about any health issues regarding the ink, but I do know that a reputable tattoo artist will ALWAYS wear gloves, sanitize everything and use new needles. So if you go in somewhere and don’t see that going on, run out the door. Really. Hepatitis and HIV aren’t funny.

  • I lived in London during the late 90’s and recall a friend getting several tattoo’s that were done with vegetable dyes, the thing is they were expected to last for a period up to 5 years. I don’t know if this helps.

  • i have two tattoos. .. a vegan tat and one i designed on my shoulder area to represent the crystalline structure of the universe around us. hehe. my next one is going to be japan-related, and i’ll be getting it soon. I recently took out some of my body piercings for good, and feel pretty good about it. [nape piercing, septum, a couple ears.. ]

tattoos done in good taste are always neat i think. my body is a canvas!
