Super tasty breakfast find!

I just found this stuff at the store and was highly skeptical. soaked it in some almond milk and added some buckwheat groats, and it is amazing! it turned into a thick , sweet porridge type cereal. i tried the apple cinnamon one. just passing it on!

  • Thanks I have been missing cereal on the go.

  • i put it in a leaktight container with the milk when i left the house and when i was ready to eat it an hour or so later it was soaked in and thick. i wish i had brought more!

  • Does it cost much. We have it at my local Whole FOODS :( I am boycotting them but I have to try this.

  • it was $6 for the bag and the serving is 2 Tbsp, so i would assume it would last a while. i’d probably have 2 servings as a meal though.

I’ve heard great things about chia seeds too and the nutritional value.

  • I’ve been adding it to my toddler’s raw breakfast and he loves it!

  • Cool so its a multi-serving bag. Thanks again for the info. I have chia seeds at home but I want to try these and then see if I can make my own who knows…

  • Ardesomond, why are you boycotting Wholefoods? Because it is annoying and expensive? I know this sounds mean, but my husband and I call it “Whole Sheep” because people kind of stand around milling and starting at the food. It’s kind of weird!

  • Mon46 – They stare because the produce looks so beautiful, but they can’t afford the stuff :).

I want to change my kids cereal. Right now they eat Chex, or Special K (one step at a time). They like crunchy stuff and anything that they have to add sugar to (I finally got them switched to stevia – still gotta work on the hubby). Any suggestions on the first cereal I should try? and is the Chia crunchy? You said it had the consistancy of pudding.

  • EnjoyRaw, I love it!!! Thanks for solving the mystery.

  • lol MON46 me and my wife call it “WHOLE PAY CHECK” and yeah I hate there Whole concept. I always feel like secretly they are owned by the same people who run the other grocery stores. They are ultra trendy, and I even read a report that wherever they are located they make housing cost go up

  • I’m with you, ardesmond. The place has a really bad vibe no matter how hard they try to literally sell the whole whole concept.

  • coconuttycoconutty Raw Newbie

Wow, they make housing prices rise??? Well I suppose that would be a good thing if you are already living there, I wouldn’t mind the added equity lol. But that does suck though. I have yet to visit this place. We have a few around here and it’s more of a I just want to go and see this place for myself sort of thing. No doubt in my mind I would start calling it WHOLE PAY CHECK!!!

I don’t see any problem with whole foods, I have a very similar big chain organic store near me, and I think these kinds of corporations should be supported, not boycotted. I believe it is a step in the right direction for our corporate world!

I’d have to agree with Elizabeth. If not for whole food, I would never have stuck to this way of eating for this long. Yes, they are expensive, and some of the people who shop there are way snobby (and lack any kind of common sense) but on the WHOLE, it’s a great place to shop, especially in winter where fresh produce is limited.

  • Well that’s the problem Sue you said fresh. Most of the produce at WHole Foods is not fresh, it has been trucked in on its last limb and then they do that whole STacking thing trying to make things appear fresh and pretty. I don’t’ buy it “literally”. Not to mention they used to have a picture of a local farmer hear, I mean a huge one, and they didn’t even carry his produce. I ask the manager about this because I know that farmer personally and within in a month the picture was replace with a blurp explaining conventional vs organic

  • SueSue Raw Newbie

Well ok, not always fresh, and I think they got a little too big and are turning into a greedy corporate enterprise, but I would still rather shop there than the A&P. When Whole Foods first came to White Plains (NY) which is where I shop, it was like a dream come true. So I woke up and it’s not such a dream anymore, but I still shop there at least once a week.

  • Did you say A&P.. LOL do they still exist.

Yes very true Sue I was one of those Whole Foodies to when they arrive and then things went down hill.

I just bought a book called Mcgee & Stuckeys The Bountiful Container. Its an excellent book on how to grow your own produce step by step. Really helpful for those that want to supplement with home grown veggies. It’s all about container gardens not your conventional row gardening.

Whole foods is not perfect, just as planet organic is not perfect, but they are still definitely a step up from your regular grocery store. Although farmers markets are still my preference, more “green-minded” big chain stores, even if the only reason they take a little more responsibility for the food they sell is for profit and trendiness, are still a good and convenient option. That’s just my opinion.

  • Sue, I have been to the WF in White Plains. It is infinitely better than the one I shop in Union Square where the aisles are narrow and just reaching for produce becomes a chore. I’m still with ardesmond on the phoniness factor, however sue and elizabethh also bring up valid points. My preference is Trader Joe’s, but they don’t always have the produce WF does. When I can, I try getting dry goods at the smaller health food stores around the city.

  • enjoyraw: the cereal definitely wasn’t crunchy. it turned into a kind of porridge in liquid, which is what the package says to do.

oddly enough, about an hour after posting this, i had to go home with terrible stomach problems. i was feeling off this morning though, so i don’t think it has anything to do with the chia, and it passed fairly quickly, but odd nonetheless. unfortunately, once i throw something up i often am not able to stomach it again for quite some time.

i didn’t know this would start something on whole foods! we just got a planet organic around here and i loved going in to it. whole foods makes me feel overwhelmed and trendy, but the planet organic actually felt useful. however, my local loblaws (large chain grocer in Canada) has organic produce for less than half the price, so i support their organic efforts and my wallet by shopping there. they have been trying really hard with organic, creating a store brand of organic specialty items like gluten free pastas and lowering the price of organic baby food to match the regular baby food.

did i read right on the news lately about wallyworld(walmart) being the biggest organic food/produce carrier? uh yikes, we have several organic food stores here in socal and i love all of them, i feel for you all who have piggly wiggly and AnP to deal with..whole paycheck is pretty funny! i assume you have heard of “tenbucks” coffee(starbucks) teehee

  • I just ordered it online. I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for the info.

  • greeniegreenie Raw Newbie

Me, too. I ordered it online and can’t wait for it to come. It looks like a super nutritious protein meal. Thank you for posting this.

  • Yeah please do order it online because if you believe that it is sold at the stores that the site says it is, you are sadly mistaken. I went to WHOLE pay cHek to get some and they looked everywhere. Called some other stores, Ruth was no where to be found. So make sure you call a store and see if they have it. Kinda over it now :(

  • SueSue Raw Newbie

ardesmond, yes, A&P is still around (all over the place, unfortunately) And mon46, I went to the whole food in union square a month ago and it was insane. Maybe because it was Sunday, but the line was literally out the door. I try to go to WF in White Plains only before noon or very late, otherwise the parking is crazy.

Whole Pay Check – So funny and sooo true. I’ve seen two videos on what Walmart does to communities. Both mentioned that when a Walmart moves in property values go down. I can see why Whole Pay Check makes prices rise.

I went to the one in Buckhead and it was incredible and as big as a department store. I shop at a family owned health-oriented fresh food market and wished they had a bigger selection, We do have an EarthFare, but I won’t buy anything in that store. I wish we had a Whole Pay Check in Columbia.

  • Hey Sue, yes Sunday is the biggest Whole sheep day of all. Sorry you had to experience it!

Atlantans—Some of Ruth’s products are available reasonably at the Natural Food Warehouse in Alpharetta, but not this one. They are small and i bet I can get them to stock it. Thanks for the product update—they do have her sprouted hemp and flax protein “powder”.

  • i tried to eat the cereal again and did have some digestive upset. anyone else who gets it, please let me know if you have any issues with it. it tastes so good, i want to keep eating it! i’d like to believe it could be something else i’m eating or stress.

  • snoopy99snoopy99 Raw Newbie

I went to whole foods yesterday and found that Ekzeil (spelling??) has a cereal out too..i looked at the ingredients and they used all sprouted stuff…they looked good not sure if it is completely raw though
