Storing Dates

I recently purchased a 5# box of Medjool Dates and wondering how to properly store them

without going bad or drying out.

Thanks so much!

  • I keep mine in the fridge. they seem just fine... though its rare they last long enough to go bad. ^_^

  • I just put my 5# jumbo medjool (bought on ebay, excellent product) in 2 liter plastic jars and they should be fine. I buy dates all the time and I know they last a month in the cabinet but I don't usually have them that long. They're find in the fridge but I don't like how tough they get so I don't usually put them in the frig.

You can always dry them in the dehydrator

Basically, you want to maintain 1) enzymes, and 2) moisture

    1) maintain enzymes by keeping cool, i.e. refrigerator

    2) maintain moisture by keeping in airtight container. I keep mine in ziplock bags with the air squeezed out. Probably any such container will work fine.

  • I did keep mine in the fridge last time and they dried out. I was afraid if I left them out they would spoil somehow.

I use them mostly in my smoothie and only 1 or 2 and not every day - I"m afraid I'll gain weight.

ItVeganAt Genesis which brand are you purchasing off Ebay? I'm currently paying $25-28 for a 5# box.

Thank you so much to all of you for responding. This site has been a blessing to me.

The company is called Fernandez Dates. This was my first time puchasing from them.I usually by deglet dates by Woodstock Farms (Mmmmm) but medjool are my favorites. I didn't mean to purchase the jumbo (too big and buttery tasting), I just wanted regular size dates but that's still an awesome deal.

The date guy at my farmers market says about six months in the fridge.
