sprouting "oat groats"

DreaDrea Raw Master

Hello, on another post I had someone direct me to a web site that was very helpful, but I’m a little confused. Forgive me for being new to this sprouting thing.

Some sites say that they are Buckweat oats, some say there groats, then I read there are different types. Hulled or not hulled?

I just basically want to know SPECIFICALLY what I need to go in my oatmeal cookies and how to sprout them without any extra equipment(something i might have around the house already)

I really would appreciate some help, Im goin crazy for some oatmeal cookies!

  • Yes I would love to know the differnece aswell. I keep hearing about Buckwheaties but I thought those were from wheatberries??...I have oat groats and wanted to make some pecan bars…

Will those work in my cookies? How did you sprout your oat groats(the cheap, no equipment version)?

  • The recipe I am talking about is pecan bars and it just calls for them soaked, overnight. I would imagine sprouting groats is similar if not the same to sprouting seeds/beans/nuts

Oat groats aren’t normally found raw, they are steamed so bugs don’t eat them, so they won’t sprout unless they are really raw. You can buy really raw ones from raw food websites.

Buckwheat is sold in most health food stores, I always buy mine and sprout them with no problems at all. I don’t know about the hulled and unhulled I just buy what is for sale, it is always the same and I just soak and sprout it. I’ve never seen it labelled hulled or unhulled, just raw buckwheat, it is sometimes called Kasha, and sometimes sold roasted.

Buckwheaties are made from sprouted buckwheat groats (groats are the raw buckwheat, & there is roasted buckwheat available, too, but it is usually labeled as kasha). To get raw whole oats, you have to order sprouting oats. They are available from www.sunorganic.com – Oat groats are not raw, but they are often labeled “raw oat groats”. Definitely confusing! :)

You can go to a feed store and buy a 50 lbs bag of premium grade horse oats. They will run you between 11-15 dollars. Make sure to ask if anyone there knows if they will sprout. And make sure they are plain (nothing added). I buy ‘440 Xtra’, Red River brand. They sprout just fine.
