rosacea and acne
i’ve had issues with rosacea and acne for years and i’ve been eating raw for just 3 weeks. anyone have any miraculous stories or advice to share? having beautiful, healthy skin would be so wonderful.
I don’t know anything about acne because it hasn’t been an issue for me and I haven’t checked into it. I have rosacea and there was a major breakthrough in that just last year. Doctors have always though it was an ongoing low-grade bacterial infection because there was some response to antibiotics. It turns out rosacea is caused by a combination of proteins/enzymes..
People with rosacea over produce two inflammatory proteins: stratum corneum tryptic enzymes (SCTE) and cathelicidin, which I think is a polypeptide. When the two are present, a third protein is formed that causes the symptoms.
Anti-biotics cut down on the production of the catalysts.
I never found anything on on a natural treatment, other than eating a anti-inflammatory diet., but heat, alcohol, and spicy foods (my favorite) exaggerate the symptoms
“Inflammation Nation” by Dr. Floyd Chilton is a really good book on how diet affects inflammation. For example, some wild keystone fish, like salmon, help lower inflammation but the farmed versions actually raise inflammation levels. Fish oil supplements are helpful. Dr. Chilton is an immunologist and goes into detail to help you understand how foods trigger inflammation.
Another source is Dr. Nicholas Perricone, who has written several books on anti-inflamation diets to control the appearance of aging. I think his later books are pretty good, I read one of them; however, if you want to understand how the food is affecting your body. I think Dr. Chilton’s book is better.
heartshapedsky – If rosacea is due to inflammation then a good anti-inflammatory to eat is kale. I have made a massaged kale salad a few times and thrown in a few toppings on it that I liked, like tomatoes and marinated mushrooms, and it was really yummy. It’s fun to “massage” it too. The recipe I have used says to massage it with your hands for 10 minutes and that breaks down the fibers and gets it nice and soft, if you cut the kale in little pieces first. I have kept it in the frig for a couple of days and it was still good! The nutrition info to support kale’s anti-inflammatory properties is below, as well as Kandace’s recipe (for me no cayenne). Also, throw some kale in your smoothies!

heartshapedsky – I had a facialist tell me I had rosacea once but I wasn’t convinced – I’m fair and I blush easily. I can’t say that I’ve had an acne problem, just occasional breakouts – but – when I gave up hardcore skincare products before I went raw my skin rebelled and became rough and blotchy. When I went raw I also started using coconut oil but my skin was still scaly so I knew I needed a better way to exfoliate. Now I dry brush with a natural facial brush and a Yerba Prima brush for my body and the combination of brushing and oil has changed my skin – it’s soft and clear. I doubt brushing is the best idea for acne since you need to be gentle, but that’s what worked for me. By the way, I so admire you for the marathon training even if you are having to take it easy right now!

i’ve tried anti inflammatory diets in the past and they’ve been difficult to stick to for me. but i love raw food so here’s hoping.
amysue—what kind of facial brush do you have? just to clarify- you use the coconut oil on your face? i’ve been dry brushing my body and putting coconut oil on after the shower. i smell so yummy!
The brush is Bass with natural bristles – found it at the health food store, it’s a facial cleansing brush, much softer than the big kind. And yes, I use the coconut oil on my face. I put it on in the morning after dry brushing and shower – it makes a great base for makeup – even under the eyes (skip the eyelids), and at night I smear it all over like cold cream including on my lashes to remove mascara and then I wipe most of it off with a damp washcloth. To me it’s much more appealing than a foaming cleanser – you can give your face a mini massage. You can shave with it too, don’t know if you’ve tried that!

heartshapedsky…. I don’t know if you are looking for this or not but it might help. I have been using a mixture on my skin at nite of
equal amounts of kayolin clay and zinc oxide for breakouts and it has really helped. I read somewhere about the actress Mae West that she had the most beautiful skin and her secret was using daily enemas.

Have to agree with amysue about the coconut oil,though I don’t use it under makeup(not that I use much at 58) ;)
It does not flair up my rosacea,which I have had for many years,the worst being my nose.
I don’t scub,just use water and a towelling face cloth.I found over the years,don’t be too rough!
so i started this thread to get some ideas/help and can i just share with you how great my skin looks?! it’s crazy, i’m just really excited, today is day 30 100% raw and my skin is smooth and almost all acne free! this is amazing. raw food rocks! i’ve been using that miraculous coconut oil too, every day- face and body- no razor burn, just lovely skin. seriously, makes me want to cry that i can type these words. thank you all! xoxo-ami
That’s brilliant news – how bad was your acne beforehand and can you attribute the improvements to anything in particular?
lollypolly- i wish i knew. i’ve been blogging everything i’ve been eating at http://heartshapedsky.vox.com/. my guess is that i’ve had no beans or grains- maybe gluten was the problem, i don’t know. my skin has been blotchy and reddish pink with acne- big and small and tiny bumpy texture all over for years.
what is your skin routine in the am and pm?

i recently switched from using dove for sensitive skin to cleanse am and pm to using only coconut oil to take off my makeup and to moisturize at night. i rinse it or wipe it off with a soft tissue.
i use ti-silc for a day moisturizer and sunblock, glominerals powder, maybelline mascara and mac eye makeup.
I used to use Dove ever since I was a little girl, then, at around age 29 I went to a new dermatologist that told me to avoid it, especially on my face! My acne definitely improved after I had stopped using it. Also, she said to always check ingredients, anything with mineral oil will clog your pours. Coconut oil will not :) And lastly, eating foods high in Vitamin A will help with acne. She wanted to put me on a super hight dose of vitamin A but I was pregnant, now I think, why not just make sure we eat a lot of vitamin A in our diet of foods instead? :)

Have you read about the dangers of sunblock? Just wondering, especially if you use it daily.
i’m using a body brush but not a face brush, still scared of my previously very sensitive face!

I worked with a guy who had horrible acne and his dermatologist told him to never use a washcloth, always use his hands. And his skin is smooth as can be now! :)
Sunblock: Here is a clip from a previous discussion, where sunblock is mentioned. I also listened to a talk with Mike Adams, the health ranger, where sunscreen can cause cancer. There was an article in our paper about it awhile ago, mentioning the chemicals being cancer-causing. There are natural sunblocks that you can use, and eating dark berries help the skin’s protection. It is something to research for sure, sunblock or suntan lotion. Remember, your skin absorbs everything, so not only are you “you are what you eat,” you are what you put on your skin too…
“Even meat-eaters get most of their vitamin-D from sunlight. Supplements are better than nothing, but you can overdose on them, or you can be deficient in one type and overloaded in another. so it’s best to just let your body make it, even if you have to resort to using a tanning booth or full-spectrum lamp during the winter. Vitamin D is stored in your fat cells too, so if you charge yourself up a lot during the spring/summer/fall, you should be fine.
SPF-8 sunblock or above, prevents ALL vitamin-D production in your skin. Also, whatever you put on your skin gets absorbed directly into your bloodstream. Read the ingredients on a bottle of sunscreen sometime and ask yourself if you want that crap in your body. Coconut oil supposedly blocks 20% of UVA rays and prevents your skin from drying out, so I’ve been using that.
So, yeah, it’s best just to wear a hat and leave your body exposed. Sun is good.”
I use a cleanser made with finely ground oat groats which i mix into a paste at the time of cleansing. Oats are very calming to the skin and help eliminate redness. If you want you can GENTLY cleanse and leave the oat mix on your skin for a few min. i have noticed an incredible transformation in my skin since I stopped using store bought stuff. If I don’t use the oat mixture, I use organic yogurt. This you apply like a mask, leave on for a few min. work your way up to 5 min., and then rinse off and then I moisturize with extra virgin coconut oil. I have never had nice skin untill now. It’s only been a couple months on this new routine too! :)
i just had a little of my son’s cooked lunch- potato fries and 1/4 of his vegan grilled cheese sandwich. my stomach feels way too full- but more importantly for this thread i feel the skin on my face, all bad tingling and irritated. my rosacea is flushing and flaring up. the irony is the woman ahead of us in line at the restaurant got a vegan grilled cheese to go and i noticed her red hair- like mine, and her pink pink face. and i thought, “oh no she shouldn’t eat that.”
haha for me right? such a know it all, when i’ve got so much to learn.
