rawbie

I’ve already made up my mind that i want to go raw, but the thing is i don’t think i’d have enough time to put thought into what i eat ahead of time. I was wondering if you guys know if it’s healthy to be 100% raw eating pretty much salads, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds but just grabbing them on the go instead of making something with them. Right now all i have is a food processor, a small citrus juice, and a messed up blender and it’s a busy summer for me.

I pretty much wanna do this cause i’m now convinced that raw and not veganism is the ultimate way of eating and i want to have that energy and liveliness you all speak of. I’m already vegan so i’m just giving up cooked food, so is this the right way to start?

  • There’s never any need for fancy recipes – fancy recipes are composed of fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts – so there’s no difference in just eating them as is.

That said, if you were to get any contraption or do anything to your food, you might want to get a blender—don’t need anything expensive, just that it can be easier to get in your two bunches of greens a day by having smoothies.

Above all, listen to your body—what out of the raw vegan palette you crave and are interested in each day. You’ll figure it all out!

I agree. If there was ever a time to try easy raw it’s summer! There are so many fresh options available and a food processor can do lots for you – pates, pestos, puddings, dips for a little variety. I love blending up fruits, nuts and dates into a pudding. Chia seeds offer endless possibilities to make a complete meal – you can search the site for ideas. Eventually you may want to get a high speed blender, love my Vitamix, but you’ll be fine for now. I’m away from home right now and most of my meals are consisting of a salad of whatever greens are freshest – beet greens, swiss chard, herbs, lettuce, or arugula + a fruit – peaches, plums, berries, or nectarines + some seeds or nuts – hemp seeds, hazelnuts, almonds, etc. Drizzle on some olive oil, lemon and salt. For a family picnic today I had lettuce leaves filled with avocado slices, cilantro leaves, lime and salt. My daughter had lettuce leaves smeared with almond butter and grated carrots rolled up and a side of blueberries. Tonight I’ll be slicing some corn off the cob and making it into some sort of salad with tomato. None of these take more than 10 minutes.

bbcc33-All my meals are fairly simple. I do make raw bread though and that does take a dehydrator so eventually you may want to get one.

amysue! I read your profile and I have to say I’m impressed by you! I was homeschooled (family of seven kids though) and my parents made sure that we traveled and saw the world and tried everything. I’m so incredibly grateful for everything they did for me (both very into healthy living). I know your daughter is going to be blessed by how you raise her.

bbcc33! My goodness! NEVER think that you need to prepare foods forever in order to live a raw lifestyle. I am a poor college student who works 18-20 hour days! My secret is eating raw food on the run AKA 2 pears instead of a cup of coffee like the rest of my classmates ;) I very rarely have time to make things in advance. For salads, I even often run into the store, grab a bag of various greens and romaine and sprouts, and roll the small stuff up into the romaine and dip it into some oil or vinegarette! Psh, who needs utensils when you have 10 fingers?! However, if I have the time, I really enjoy smoothies because they are divine and easy to have on the run—just make a few at a time so they’re ready to go when you are. Beware: it can appear fallic to others when you are eating a cucumber whole, I have found this out the awkward and sad way… :( But, I’m convinced that whole foods and “monomeals” are the way to go if you’re in a time crunch.

Have fun and good luck with this transition! It will be similar to when you went vegan, I’m sure: it will be wierd, frustrating, you might have some cravings along the way that you’ll give in to. You’ll be challenged by people asking “WHY?” and you’ll have fun sharing your new recipes with others. Let us know how it goes!

Also, I highly reccommend David Wolfe’s Sunfood Diet Success System. It changed my life! I read one chapter a day outside WHILE I ate my raw lunch last summer, and dude, it answered all of my questions and more. You can get it on amazon.com for pretty cheap used.

oh!!! And dont think you have to buy things like $30 raw cacao beans and $3 organic cucumbers and a $500 blender. Being raw does not mean you have to be a millionaire. I make $9/hour and do just fine! :)

  • Okay i feel better now. And i just read a recipe book called RAWvolution and if ever i get some of those fancy ingredients i want to make some of them. I was also worried cause in a year I’m going off to college and was worried that living away from home was going to be even worse. i just used my food processor to make a smoothie so i think i can survive for now.

bbcc33 – feeling nostalgic, RAWvolution was my first raw book one year ago today, this being my anniversary. It was like reading another language – dehydrating, soaking, sprouting, so foreign, I couldn’t even begin to make most of the recipes, and all the coconut water, where would one find coconut water??? Now I’ve done all of those things but my favorite recipe of his is still the tabouli which requires no special equipment at all, you can even leave out the hemp seeds if you can’t find or afford them and it still tastes amazing.

troublesjustabubble – so kind of you to say! It’s nice to get a boost like that. I always find it amusing the misconceptions people have – that I must be super intelligent to be able to teach EVERYTHING and it must be SO MUCH WORK, when in reality we sleep late, hang out in our pj’s and play Boggle. I’m not qualified to teach anything, I just love watching her learn and I love relearning everything with her. And traveling is something we all love, so glad you look back on it with gratitude!

My Mom didn’t know everything either but she allowed us to pursue things that we loved and kept us focused. I always enjoyed learning because of the connotation I have from my childhood. My sister is currently pursuing her masters so no one can say homeschooling doesn’t work!

bbcc33, food processor is great! I think it’s my most used equipment. actually, the main reason i do plan ahead is sometimes I want to make something and I am out of just one ingredient. I just can’t keep everything stocked all the time, like jalenpinos, etc. but you will find a way to make it work for you. since you asked is it healthy i would say yes but make sure you have some EFAs such as in flax, chia, hemp, etc. you can even buy pre-ground flax these days. just throw it on top of a salad.

    good luck!
