Raw Mommies/Daddies w/ Raw Kiddies?

I have a 2 1/2 year old. She is allergic to dairy, nuts, seafood, shellfish, wheat and soy to the point where she will have an analypatic reaction if she eats them. She has severe eczema which is being “controlled” (I put it in parenthesies because it’s so NOT in control) through steriods which are constantly increasing in strength. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to wean her from the steriods and, of course, her eczema comes right back and with a vengence. Oatmeal does not work for the itching, nor does olive oil, or jojoba, shea butter, etc. In addition, she suffers from Reactive Airway Disease which is probably a result of her food issues rather than having Asthma. They have been trying to pursuade me to put her on an inhaled steriod to prevent Asthmatic episodes, but I’ve said NO FREAKING WAY. :)

That said, I really want to heal her and feel like raw food might be the way to go. We still do not know all of her food allergies (and also allergies are ever changing and someone can develop allergies at any time) as she was only tested for certain ones. I am wondering if there are any moms with small children who are on a raw food diet and, if so, how you manage. Do you give your child a mix of raw and cooked foods? I doubt that I will be able to feed her completely raw because my DH is not raw, but I feel like if I can do more she will still reape the benefits. She does eat veggies now and she loved the raw lasanga I made with the sunflower seed pate and the cap’n crunch berry “cereal” with the agave.

For those who have kids who are raw, how did you transition them to raw? Any words of wisdom or advice? (BTW, My DD2 is not vegetarian but she typically does not eat meat because she doesn’t like it, which leads me to believe her body is telling her not to eat it. She would never eat/drink soy and low and behold her body could not take it, so I think she’s still pretty intune with it, or as in tune as a 2 yr. old can be.)

Sorry for the long winded post.

Did you try giving her some flax oil for omega 3’s? I have a friend who has asthma, eczema, along with allergies, and she eats almost nothing containing omega 3’s. Since your daughter doesn’t eat nuts or any seafood I would imagine she’d be deficient. Lack of it can cause all the problems you’ve listed – including the allergies. Dr. Mercola has a good article on it here. And, on one of his radio shows Bryan Farnum said that flax oil is better absorbed when taken with something fermented. You might want to try kefir or rejuelac.

As for transitioning children, I would probably just suggest that you find raw versions to replace the things she likes to eat the most, and keep exposing her to new foods and see what she gravitates towards. You’ll probably find that the allergies will disapear once her body starts to detox. I would probably recomend to ease her onto raw foods gradually, then again I’m not an expert by any means. Good luck though! It’s all worth the effort because if she starts on raw now she should grow up to be a very healthy person.

  • My daughter had eczema as a toddler. Before we went raw in April 2007, she would tend to have dry, itchy skin. When she was a toddler, I would make beeswax bars to rub on her body, before I dried her off from the bathtub. We do not use store bought soap, we purchase naturally, handmade soaps. The beeswax bar really helped her eczema.

But not too long ago I found a post on www.earthclinic.com about a mother who cured her son’s eczema by using Apple Cider Vinegar in the bathtub. She used 1 cup of ACV in his bath water every night until it was gone. (She soaked her son in this for 30 minutes.) So for our daughter’s dry, itchy skin we put 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar into her bath water. I let her soak in this. It is amazing how soft her skin is when she gets out of the bathtub. We also keep a bottle of ACV in the bathroom for easy access. This bottle is used for other ailments we have learned ACV is great for such as mosquito bites, acne, etc…the list is endless. I now do most my cleaning with ACV and keep a small bowl of it around our fruit when we have gnats. It is also a great body pain reliever to soak in. If we tend to feel a cold or sore throat coming on we drink an 8 oz. glass of water with 2 tablespoons of ACV and a dash of cayenne. We are find in 15 to 30 minutes. No more drugs. Yeah!!!

We were able to switch our daughter kind of naturally to raw by just trying the green smoothies from Victoria Boutenko’s book “Green for Life”. After about one and half weeks we were all craving more raw then cooked foods. And it just grew from there. Our daughter is 9 yrs. old and we share with her everything that we are learning about eating right. Why certain foods are great for your body, what their benefits are, and why certain foods are not good for your body. It is nice to hear her teaching her friends, why certain things our not good for you to put in your body. I defiantly recommend getting Victoria Boutenko’s book Green for Life to start out with when switching to raw. Going raw we have become vegan and we do not eat a lot of nuts. We are spending our time now learning about the proper food combinations by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton. There are great recipes out there for switching to raw from sad, but we found the more you travel the RAW journey your body’s desire for food changes, too. It becomes more simplistic.

I do not know what to say about your daughter’s allergies. But I think you are headed in the right direction. Victoria Boutenko cured her daughter of asthma, her son of type 2 diabetes, her husband from hyperthyroidism, and more. Here is their website www.rawfamily.com

I hope some of this helps.

  • Hello, My son has been raw since birth, he is now 15 months old. His typical diet consists of green smoothie for breakfast, various fruit through the day and something heavier for dinner like avocado with hemp dressing or a seed pate. He loves to snack on flax crackers and goes crazy for durian. The great thing about kids is that they seem to be naturally drawn to juicy fruit. So maybe start by offering your daughter lots of fruit and green smoothies and make sure she is getting the good fats like avocado, hempseeds, and maybe some young coconut. I know without a doubt that all the problems you mentioned will be cured with raw food. Another thought is that kids want to eat what their parents are eating so the more she sees you chowing down on yummy raw food the more she’ll be into it. Good luck, I’d love to hear how it goes.

  • I got some flax oil over the weekend to include in her foods. I do give her hempmilk (we are transitioning to raw) and she does drink that, although I haven’t noticed an improvment in her skin or other ailments, but that’s probably because she needs even more Omega 3s. She can’t have kefir because she can’t have anything with dairy in it. I looked for non-dairy keifer yesterday and didn’t find any.

I am going to try to ACV baths for her skin. I have taken ACV internally to reduce swelling post surgery and have also used it on my hair. I love the stuff. I’m hoping that the smell on her skin won’t be too strong. I’m assuming I should rinse her after she’s soaked, no?

I am going to check out all of the websites that you lovely people posted for more information. Thank you so much! You guys are a wonderful resource!

  • Curlysparkle,

I have not noticed the ACV leaving to much of an odor on my daughter. She washes her body off in the acv water, like she would if she were taking a regular bath. It has been a while since she has used ACV in her water. But if I remember correctly, it is just a small odor. Nothing too strong. We do not rinse her off. She takes her bath in the ACV, dries off, and gets out.

I have started reading Ann Wigmore’s book called “The Wheatgrass Book”. We started drinking green smoothies before we went raw. I have read in a couple of books if you start out on green smoothies the taste of wheatgrass does not bother you. We had been drinking green smoothies for about 1 1/2 months before we got a chance to try wheatgrass. We were really nervous because we were told by several people it was disgusting. We were shocked to find out that it was just the opposite for us. It was so delicious. It had a sweet taste to it. I thought it tasted like a really good pineapple. Anyway, I am telling you this because wheatgrass helps heal a number of things. So, thinking of your daughter, I thought you should check out the book “The Wheatgrass Book” by Ann Wigmore.

  • Aw… thank you so much for sharing that with me! I will have to look the book up! Thank you!

Where did you find a raw recipe for: cap

  • I think I saw the recipie here, maybe. We can’t use coconut oil on her skin. I don’t know if technically it’s a nut, but it makes her itch. Same for Shea butter. We also have to stay away from Honey.

When I got home from work yesterday, my DH had already given the baby a bath, so I could’t try to ACV because her skin is already so dry. I will try to ACV tonight and see how that works.

I tried to give her some zucchini spagetti with raw sauce and she was not having any part of it, but she loved the lasagna so I don’t get it! lol…

I let you all know how the ACV works for her.
