The Quinoa Question

Most RAW restaurants have dishes that include steamed quinoa. I assume this is still considered RAW because it isn’t steamed over 118 degrees. How do you ensure this when preparing Quinoa at home?

Comments

  • Im probably wrong but I was thinking steam was over 118 since water boils at like 212 or something like that

  • So is Quinoa not RAW?

  • Ive had sprouted quinoa ive never had steamed quinoa from a raw restaurant but i guess it might be raw since they serve it there i just didnt think that steaming was still raw

  • I recently had STEAMED quinoa at a Raw restaurant in L.A. It was the only non-raw item on their menu, and they identified it as such. (I added it to my kale salad.) They sell it because it’s “a high protein grain.” But it’s definitely NOT Raw once it’s steamed. As smoothielove said, you can sprout it though. Anything steamed aint Raw.

  • You can sprout Quinoa and then dehydrate it. It makes a raw great granola ingredient mixed with sprouted buckwheat, almonds, sunflower seeds and such. You can get Quinoa in different colors. In Canada we have red, brown and beige available.

agreed it is not raw when steamed. but quionoa does handle heat very well just like coconut oil.

steam is too hot not to destroy the enzymess in the poor little quinoas! I usually sprout it and use it as a substitue for cous cous in tabouleh.

Rawnutrition.ca, that sounds great, I never thought of doing that. I’ll give it a try!! No buckwheat though, I really don’t like the taste!!

Am I odd here? I have found that I love quinoa sprouted and raw over cooked ANY DAY! I also think Kale tastes better raw over cooked as well. I used to hate kale before I had it raw.

  • saraw no you are not alone. Kale in the cooked days you couldn’t get me to touch the stuff, may have something to do with being more alkaline these days, dark greens tend to taste better.

Spouted quinoa I have not tried yet, but really wondering why would a RAW restaurant be selling quinoa steamed. I understand appealing to the masses but if it ain’t raw why do they sale it. It would be nice to go to a RAW restaurant and not have to do research on everything while you are there.

oooh.. I wish I liked sprouted quinoa but everytime I’ve made it it’s been so bitter. I know it’s got good protein in it and would love to have it but I just can’t take the bitter

  • ardesmond2 .. . I’ve been to a couple of Raw restaurants in L.A.that don’t sell cooked dishes, but use cooked ingredients like Nama Shoyu, maple syrup and other stuff. If you want to stay 100% Raw, you really do have to ask. Bummer, huh? And I agree, raw kale tastes way better than cooked kale-mush!

  • Could someone please tell me how to sprout this super grain? Would it be ok to eat uncooked w/o sprouting too?

    Thanks for all the responses!

  • Earth Hugger it is so easy to sprout, you just soak it for 4-6 hours, rinse and drain and let to sprout for 1-2 days. I do not recommend to eat it uncooked and without sprouting, they need to be sprouted to remove the saponins and other susbstances that make it undigestable.

Thanks flybaby – that was going to be my next question also. Is all of the quinoa raw? Is it like a seed? I guess it must be if you can sprout it. I have a package of white and red combined but it doesn’t specifically say raw on the package. They don’t process it, do they?

  • You are welcome SarahJ, I’m quite proactive :). I think that all quinoa are raw, however I have never seen red ones. Well, it is a grain, and the most nutritious of all.
