Prepared raw food?

I would love to go all raw eventually. But I need a good quality place to purchase labor intensive meals and items from, via fedex maybe or in the Washington, D.C. area where I live. I’m talking about a raw restaurant (don’t think there are any in northern Virginia where I live), a raw chef for meals to go, etc. Even a personal recommend for shipped items would be okay.

I can of course do my own salads, shakes, etc. But I’d like to buy raw crackers, snacks, “soups,” mock SAD dishes, desserts like raw ice cream—things that take a significant output in equipment and time. I will eventually have the time to do these things myself, just not yet. And the D.C. area, especially northern Virginia, is very behind in this movement. I do know there is a meetup group here.

Several years ago there was a raw cafe on K Street in D.C., but I’d never heard of eating this way. It didn’t seem very appetizing, frankly, I think I’d read a review in the Washingtonian magazine. But I dropped by anyway because I was intrigued. The staffer was very somber, seemed unhappy to be there, and not really inclined to explain, offer samples, etc. So I didn’t pursue or buy anything.

Now the lifestyle is well-known and I’ve been reading books, websites and blogs and adding more raw to my diet. But it is very labor intensive and this area is behind the times with places to buy. I can’t help but thing there is a big marketplace just waiting to be tapped. And I just need some help with it! Bests, Ceci

  • Hey Ceci, I agree that those are both good places to start. One word of caution about Rawvolution: many of their items are so salty as to be inedible—and this is coming from a salt-lover. They have a good product and offer a wonderful service in an area that is sorely lacking for raw-foodists. But! I have always had at least two items that were beyond my tolerance. Just a note.

  • Hey Ceci, I’m in the DC area too. I plugged a semi-raw place in the product/event section called Everlasting Life. There may also be a place or 2 on http://vegdc.com. And, RawVee alerted me to a place called www.NaturalZing.com. Hope that helps.
