oriental market minibrag

in ani phyos cook book she talks alot about oriental markets being a good cheap source for some items(like coconuts) so today i visited the biggest one in the area. still 45 minutes form the house so not going to be a regular occurance. While i didnt find the coconuts to be any better priced or any different, still the plastic wrapped white variety- no green fresh ones( and this close to mexico too..hurumph) I did come out of there with some terrific asian greens like pea leaves and oriental broccoli. I also bought a nice lemony herb, that no one could tell me the english name of! then the biggest find, fresh lychee!!!what a treat, i ate five all over the car and the front of my shirt( they are messy!) the hubby tried one and hated it said it resembled a male pelicans nether regions cant say i have ever veiwed this( he was more direct in terminology! i guess it did look like a rocky mountain oyster when peeled! teehee) any how if i could read thai/filipino, japanese…im sure id have found a bit more loot, but maybe another trip in a month or so armed with pics from the internet! I did find some food from my youth, not raw so no longer on the menu, but those dried anchovys where always good with a cold coke in manilla, not to mention chompoy, a dried plum in some hideious orange chemical powder that was sickly sweet then salty then sour!

Haa! Your husband’s description of the lychees is hilarious. I actually tried one for the first time today. My son and I were at the co-op and he asked me what they were, and the produce lady said we could try one if we wanted to so we did. Er… bleh. I could take it or leave it, kind of like a slimy grape. My son made a horrible face and said, “Mom it looks like an eyeball!” (He’s 9.) But he tried it, gotta give him credit for that. He HATED it, but at least he tried it. Hehe… I’m always encouraging him to try new foods, especially fruits and vegs.

  • where do you live? I am from Minnesota, and have transplanted to San Diego, I immediately noticed 2 things the asian markets here in SD don’t have the great deals as the markets there, Young coconuts and mangos 2 for $1. Plus I noticed the farmers markets were not qiute the bargain I was used to. There you can usually buy 3 large veg/fruit items for $5. However there is no Henry’s market and I find I save alot on Produce there especially if I buy what’s in season. I love lychee, do you have to try them at a young age, my mom fed us them all the time, but my husband also only tried them recently and I think you husbands discription was what he thought too. So odd I just love them maybe it is acquired taste, like olives, I didn’t try one until well into my teens, and I think the are horrible.

  • Could the lemony herb you bought be lemon grass??

jenergy, why yes an eyeball! have to remember that for halloween! although at 5 bucks a bag im not sure ide like them just being a prop! cheaper to peel grapes! I ate these all the time in manilla as a kid, with guava and mango and papaya.( foreign service brat here) so my taste buds have had the full exposure to weird foods! like poy! yuck. ;)

smidbrod, wow, im a maryland transplant myself here in san diego i live in north county. so the closest good oriental market was in mira mesa-”lucky seafood” used to be abc seafood. my farmers coop in maryland way cheaper than the farmers markets out here but then i grew alot of my own stuff back east too, here im to busy to try plus its so bloody hot that it seems to labor intensive and water wasteful to do much. I have fresh herbs on my porch but thats it. I go to henrys, orchards, sprouts and frasier farms in a pinch between saturday farmers markets. there are some during the week to but since i work they are harder to get to for me. where did you eat lychee? here in the states or did you live overseas too? maybe they are an aquired taste, i love them!!! i remember trying them canned once at a chinese potluck dinner …..eeeeewww! now i know how people who try canned pears feel, ugh! ;) how long have you been here in San diego?

hungry girl, nope i know what that looks like this looks more like basil but its not the standard type of lemon basil im used to, the leaves are more tough and kinda furry. any ideas? its tastey!

  • I have been here for alittle over a year now. Tough my husband and I are moving back to the midwest. We miss our families, and on our salaries, we can’t wotk enough to be able to buy a home here, so we will head back in August. You no whatelse is a bummer, I wasn’t very impressed with the raw foods resturaunt here in SD, I think they have 3 locations, 1 in north county too. There was only 1 place in Minneapolis, it was fantastic, the service a little off and on but the food was very good and inventive. I did only give the SD place 1 chance, but I found it was to expensive to not like anything I had. Maybe you’ve gone to 1 of the locations and could suggest a dish. I unfortunately have not gone up to LA to try any places, have you?

I hear you smidbrod! ive been living on a shoe string since moving here 8 years ago! Im not that impressed with cilatros, the food is ok but for heavens sake, 24 bucks for a smoothie and burrito! why? there is a place in LA : au lac or something like that, said to be good, its over an hour from me though and the local SD group of raw foodies are planning a field trip there end of july. I was hoping to find something really good in downtown SD for my birthday no luck so far, and my sweet hubby is trying so hard to take me somewhere raw! ah well, good luck on your move home, im always on the verge of moving on. the pacific north west for me after this if i can budge my native ca hubby. so far i have him convinced to try a move and rent our homes so we can return if he really hates the weather farther north. i for one wil love the rain, i dream about it!!!! plus i miss my traditional forest garden with ferns and hollyhocks, larkspur and foxgloves!!! sigh i even miss moss! one can only grow so much lavender, and star jasmine! teehee

  • I love the ocean and the palm trees here, but I don’t feel as in touch or shall I say in Awe of nature as I did when I lived in the Midwest. The smell of pine trees, and crisp days, heck I even miss the cold days, because when the spring comes it’s so amazing. To really see the cycle of life, the power of mother nature as well with thunderstorms and snow storms. It’s very easy here. We visited a month ago, and I was like everything is so green, it’s cool to see everything green and colorful, then browns, gold, and orange, in fall, then all white, then green again. I remember always being excited when I saw the buds on the trees and the color come back. Maybe he will like it as well as you do. I have a friend here who talked her 55year old San Diego native to move to Kentucky her home town, so anything is possible. I posted a Question what resturaunt do people like so maybe one you can go to will come up.

ok, this is what my local raw foodies suggested: the greenery, in encinitas behind the cozy cafe. looks like this a a good birthday outing. where do you do yoga?;) i just started at the yoga room two months or so ago! I LOVE IT!

  • I teach yoga full time here in San Diego. My husband and I are working on opening our own studio when we move back to the midwest. I am gald you love it, I do too, it has changed our lives!

  • omshantiomshanti Raw Newbie

thats great! If i where a woman of leasure i would do yoga everyday and meditate by the beach, prepare living foods and ride my horses….sigh , but alas there is that pesky living to make, so i can afford three classes of yoga a week if i dont get my hair cut or highlighted! teehee guess im gonna look like a real bohemian! good luck on your own yoga studio, sounds like heaven!

I always think people look prettier with their natural hair colour!

  • omshantiomshanti Raw Newbie

zoe! me too really but some how in the growing my hair out stage i got into color, which i think is a hoot but it get kinda crazy when you think about it and expensive. I used to say it was my one vanity and so justified my spending on it but now, hmmmm things are changeing! could it be< gasp> im growing up? aaaaaargh! teehee;)
