New to Going Raw - Have some questions about Nuts and Dried Fruit

Hi All,

I was recently admitted to hospital with appendicitis, since having my appendix removed I am trying to make healthier food choices and have decided to try ‘going raw’. Ideally I would like to detoxify my system and I am also hoping to shed a few extra pounds. This website is a great resource for a beginner so thought I would join as I have a few questions, I would really appreciate any comments, or help with the following.

Nuts, Seeds and Dried Fruit Whilst I am using these as good source of Fibre and Protein I am worried about the extremely high calorie count. The saturated fat is also quite high. Part of my reasons for going raw include shedding a couple of extra pounds, I was wondering about the impact these foods have when trying to loose weight whilst going raw.

I have concocted a mix that consists of Rasins, Oats, Wheat Flakes, Brazils, Cashews, Roasted Hazelnuts, Toasted coconut chips, Malted Wheat Flakes, Crispy Barley Flakes, Barley Flakes, Sultanas, Sunflower Seeds, Crispy Rice, chopped dates, Gojiberries, Dried Cranberries and Dried Blueberries – I then mix this with a spoonful of Honey. Will eating these foods make me put on weight?

Caffeine I still drink 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day, I know that for a proper detox you need to cut out all toxins but was wondering how much the caffeine will effect cleansing my system.

Also, how long does it take to notice the side effects of going raw, its been about a week, 2 weeks if you count not eating much due to appendectomy – I am expecting a change too soon?

Ekk, that’s lots of questions, thanks in advance for any comments and thanks again for a great site.

Hi Donna, Welcome to goneraw! Have you tried any of the lovely recipes on this site? I love veggie based recipes. It’s fun to create huge salads with any base – think outside the lettuce! Try salads with cucumbers and dill, or tomatoes and basil, or cabbage and cilantro. Enjoy fresh fruit smoothies.

The mix that you mentioned is not raw. See this list http://purelyraw.com/deadfoodlist.htm You can purchase cashews that are actually raw at http://livingnutritionals.com/

Dried fruits from the store are dried at high temperatures. In your list, only the sunflower seeds and dates and gojiberries are actually raw. You can purchase special raw honey by asking a local grower or ordering it online.

Don’t be discouraged! Take it slow during the transition. Focus on fresh fruits, veggies, and lots of greens. You asked about the ‘side effects’... do you mean good or bad effects of going raw? I encourage you to slowly add more raw food into your diet over the next several months, and keep trying to eat LOTS of salad and fruit. Everyone’s body is different – but in my case, I felt tired sometimes, and more energized at other times. Now that i’ve been eating 99% raw for 5 months, I have more energy than ever! It took me 1 year eating 50 to 80% raw food till I was ready to eat all raw. Go slow, if that suits you. ENJOY the delicious produce!

Hi! I’m new to this too, but I just wanted to share that for me starting off eating very simply has worked best because I didn’t have to think (well, worry) too much about what I was eating. The first week I went raw I ate almost nothing more than green smoothies. I know this approach isn’t for everyone, but I loved the simplicity of not having to plan any meals. Plus- I felt great. Now I am learning to make some more involved recipes and it’s fun… but it does take a lot of planning. I agree with the post above me—start with fruit and salads, (and smoothies if you have a blender)—get some books and start reading about living foods. Happy healing! Hope you are feeling better soon!

try a big green smoothie every day before you drink your coffee. Green smoothies are usually 60% greens (spinach is good) and 40% fruit (all juice in bottles is not raw, use fresh whole fruit or home juiced fruit) . They are great because they balance you out and they help to stop cooked cravings and will help you lose your caffeine addiction. It will be easier for you to quit coffee the more raw you eat and drink.

Like everyone else has said, take it slow, go as fast as the slowest part of yourself and make it pleasurable you really should never feel deprived on raw.
