Needing Help With Green Smoothie!!

So many people SWEAR by green smothies, and I'd LOVE to try one. But many recipes that I've looked up for green smothies all have fruit that I'm just not crazy about. I'm not fond of mangos, peaches, plumbs, pineapple.... and I'm very hesitant to try the mixing veggies with fruit that I DO like. Does anyone have a recipe that would help me overcome this?

I'm also very crazy about this Kale Apple Soup from a book that I have, but I'm also hesistant in making this as a lighter fluid--and also because I want to branch out on new things.

  • hi to begin with green smoothies do 2 portions fruit (blueberry, strawberry or rasberries) and 1 portion green (kale, spinach).

This is how i started and now i add broccoli, spinach, kale, parsley and cilantro with blueberry and honey...

give this a try but start with low portion of greens and gradually increase the green ingredients

On the home page I posted a recipe called Vanilla Malt. I add a handful of spinach to it most of the time. You absolutely can't taste the spinach. Try that, if you don't like it, you've only lost a small amount of staples. My advice is to start with a smoothie that you like now and add a little spinach and taste it. You'll be so surprised, no taste of spinach at all, then all you have to do it get around the green color. I am now hooked on green smoothies, I feel so good after having one.

  • strawberries, bananas, kale, and some raw honey. simple, and just enough sweetness.

It is my understanding that you would like a green smoothie without fruit... Generally this is what I make for lunch, give it a try and see what you think...

Kale, spinach, broccoli, parsley, tomato, carrot, ginger, purple cabbage, yellow pepper, ACV, Aloe Vera juice, cholrella, spirulina, chia seed, pumpkin seed, stevia, water and because I like things spicy, some cayenne pepper...

cayenne sprinkle then taste, about 1/8 tsp

    water 2 cups

    stevia 1 TB

    Pumpkin seed 1/4 Cup

    Chia seed 2 TB

    spirulina 1 tsp

    cholrella 1 tsp

    Aloe Vera 1/4 Cup

ACV big glug, I like a lot

    Yellow pepper, 1/2

cabbage same amt as yellow pepper

    ginger 1 inch chunk

    carrot 1 whole, cut up

First 5 ingredients as much as the blender will hold to the top, it will all blend down to the fill line

Makes enough for 2 meals... smile

  • When I make my kids green smoothies I use 60% fruit and 40% greens I let them choose the type of fruits to use then I add any greens I have in the fridge. I know your hesitant to try using the type of fruit you DO like but you will only know if you like it if you try it first add a SMALL amount greens to it. Then you can add more as you will crave more, Victoria Boutenko who brought "green smoothie" to the "main stream" has said in her book Green For Life.

Look her up on www.youtube.com the Boutenko family has vidoes up on how to make green smoothies and other raw food information.

I hope you begin to enjoy green smoothies they are so wonderful and full of green goodness.

  • hey chattanoog,

Green smoothies can sound intimidating but they're really quite simple. Just make a smoothie out of the fruit you would like to drink and add a handful of greens to it. There's no need for a recipe. My green smoothies tend to be far more simple than many "recipes" on here, due to the fact that I cannot afford berries, mangoes, papayas, etc. to put in a smoothie! I have two basic smoothies that I rotate, depending on my mood:

1 or 2 oranges, apples whatever green I have on hand

    OR

1 banana, 1 apple, whatever green I have on hand

I also like my smoothies thick so I can eat them like soup out of a bowl. This helps me eat slower and enjoy my green soup to the fullest!

Banana and cherries, with any greens, and a bit of nutmylk. You can add in carob or cacao if you like. It's the only one I have gotten my BF to try! The color of the cherries, combined with carob, make the whole thing brown, so it not only masks the taste of the greens, but the color as well!

I like green smoothies myself, but this one tastes less green than any others I make. I do use a lot of greens, though. You can start off using very little, and build up, as suggested already. Great idea!

I have heard folks mention that spinach is a good green to start with, because it is sweeter than most. I find that parsley is a good mild one too. I can't tolerate mustard greens, though! Ok taste in the smoothies, but not so ok on my tummy later! Way too much to consume at one time. Burns. Just a tip. You may feel differently, though.

Yeah, spinich is a good green to start with as you honestly can't taste it. My daily smoothie is:

    Kiwi

    banana

    fresh apple juice

    pear

frozen berries (or banana or just ice cubes)

    spinich

Such a great way to start the day. I hate it when I can't have one.

I got up too early this morning, started reading this thread again, and now can't wait until it gets light enough outside so I can go pick some spinach! You do start to crave it. It used to be cacao that I wanted first thing, but now it's the green smoothie!

mmmmmm, green smoothies. I love them. I started out just using spinach and strawberries and bananas with honey. Now I don't use honey and I add all kinds of fruits with it. The only ingredient I make sure to have is the bananas because they make it creamy!

Today my smoothie will consist of,

    1 apple

    handful of blackberries

    handful of raspberries

    a few cherries and blueberries

spinach(because I just ran out of turnip greens and collard greens)

    3 bananas

    water

    It's soooo yummy

  • Yeah waterbaby was right, I'm really more into vegetables than I am fruits. I've read that it's bad to mix fruit and veggies together, but so many people love green smothies! I'm just hesitant that mixing them will taste bad. I LOVE spinach and crave it quite frequently, actually. I'll definitely try waterbaby's version, and I'll also stop being such a baby and add fruit to the greens at one point. Thanks a lot you guys, I appreciate you very much!

You can mix leafy greens with fruit w/o any negative effects, from what I read.

I would do water or FRESH apple juice, pears or apples, and a green that you like (spinach, kale, whatever). Blend. If you want more sweetness, add dates or a banana or another pear. Keep it simple. I wouldn't add agave or honey if you use it, just because I prefer to keep my food as whole as possible, and I think it's best to use real/whole fruit as opposed to sweeteners, and then sweeteners ON OCCASION only, not regularly. For a clean body, combine as little fruit as possible while still making the smoothie taste good to YOU. Don't forget that everyone is different, and this is okay. It is nothing to feel bad about if you don't like one person's smoothie recipe; we all have different tastes. :)

  • i was very hesitant to try green smoothies at first. a friend had been telling em about them and wuite frankly, sounded gross. but when you get it right-ah, sublime. and don't worry about mixing fruit and veg, they combine perfectly and blended up you can't even taste the beg.

    here is a favorite:

    1 bag frozen spinach

1/2 bag frozen mango or cherries

    1/2 bag frozen raspberries

so, if you don't like mango, how about papaya? a banana and a bag of blueberries or cherries is delightful as well. and, you can always add a date or 2 for extra sweetness. talk about fiber!!

spinach blends the best, if you have a vitamiz you can adda few leaves of chard or lacinto kale as well. but i find that too much of these can give an off-taste. green or red kale is very bitter and terrible in smoothies. better to dehydrate with braggs and olive oil for chips...

my friend told me about banana, date, celery, almond butter, amazing! like a very sweet pudding. i feel like its cheating.

    good luck!!

noelleloveshoney~ I believe purchased frozen spinach has been cooked, before freezing. You my want to consider getting spinach fresh, rather than frozen.

  • I'm new to raw and still tentative on green smoothies, but I've been starting my mornings off with this green smoothie every day and it seems to work well for me:

    1/2 cup spinach leaves

    1 celery stalk

1 cup fresh or frozen berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries - sometimes I add cherries in as well)

    Water

Ice, if I'm adding fresh fruit

The smoothie has the color and taste of the berries so you don't really notice the greens but they're there :D.

    Tam

  • The no mixing fruit and veggies rule does not apply to leafy greens. Here are blended salad recipes you may enjoy:

    handful spinach

    bit of parsley

    2 med. tomatoes

    1 celery

    1/2 red pepper

    teaspoon dulse

    1/3 cuke

    peas or brocolli (1/4 cup)

    Fred Patenaude's Blended Salad

    1-2 tomatoes or half cuke

    splash of ACV or lemon

    1/2 red pepper

    several leaves non-bitter greens

    (green onion)

    celery stalks

    1/2 to 1 avocado

    dulse

  • Start with one leaf and work your way up :)

You won't even really taste it!

I know you said you don't personally like pineapple, but I happen to love pineapple and a kale leaf in my smoothies (with some cashews and another fruit like peach).

I was reading a blog recently in which the blog author made his green smoothies just with bananas, water, and a green like spinach. You could try that....
