Need some help getting started

So, I am new to raw foods, but I am highly motivated and interested.

I need some help getting started as far as knowing what I should get. I’m sure a lot of you are on budgets and I wanted some advice on how to get started while keeping it simple (I’m super strapped for cash for the time being). Any advice would be helpful.

Do any of you have any ideals about what a good raw grocery list looks like? I also have a hard time finding anything remotely specialty (flax seed oil, pretty much anything that isn’t really basic) due to my current location, smack dab in the middle of Texas in a small town. So I have to keep it ultra-simple for now.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there Pet, There have been quite a few threads on how to do raw on a budget. If you go to the forums page you can do a search words like “expensive” should come up with some good threads for you.

My husband and I went raw and have stayed raw for over 3 years and we are not wealthy people at all. We do spend a lot on food, but it evens out because we don’t buy coffees, drinks, medication, or go out to eat…etc How much we spent did used to freak me out, but over time my priorities have really changed and I don’t worry or even bat an eyelid at spending £1.09 on one avocado like I did today!!

I also go to wholesale fruit and veg markets, Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern Food stores where everything is cheap and really great quality. And I go to supermarkets at about 6 pm when they reduce all the organic fruit and veg.

A dehydrator helps because it is cheap to make raw bread and it is really filling. Once you have made a batch it will last for the week and you only have to make some pate or cheese or something to go with it every day.

We quit nuts and only use sprouted sunflower seeds, which are easier on the body, taste either no different or better in recipes and are extremely cheap.

You don’t need all the supplements and super foods to make this work. But dabbling with them can help to get you through a difficult spell. You’ll find that the longer you go on the less food you need, and the more satisfying simple food will be to you. It really does just get better and better. And much easier too.

A simple staple for you could be a sunflower seed pate rolled up with other veggies in a lettuce wrap. Remember to get in your greens ;) And just use what you can get, experiment and play with what you have. If a recipe calls for something you don’t have just substitute.

Here is my grocery list, it is pretty much the same every time!

Spinach, Kale, Spring Onions /Green Onions, Carotts, Celery, Red, Yellow and Orange Bell Peppers, Avocado, Cucumbers

    Buckwheat, Sunflower seeds, Flax seeds

Hemp oil, sometimes Coconut Butter, Unfiltered Olive Oil

Fresh dates, apples, lemons, tomatoes and whatever fruit is in season

    drinking/uncooking water

    salt

    cayenne powder curry powder
