A little South Korean Help

Hello all. I have a few questions for those of you well versed in the rawness. I am now in the position where I can start making my own dishes and start the transition of being mostly raw. I say this because for the past 4 years I have basically lived on a ship (not a pirate but rather a sailor).

So many of these recipes look amazing and for the past six months I have been making a list of this I wanted to make. However, I am so lost when it comes to alot of the ingredients and how tos of it all. Is there a book out there that will teach me the basics?

The other hard part is I am now living in Seoul, South Korea. Besides not being able to speak Korean or read Hangul, I don’t think many of the ingredients used are available here. Now if stinky fish and other weird sea creatures were called for I would be golden. It’s even hard to eat anything vegetarian. So many times I have ordered what I thought was going to be vegetarian to find some kind of shell or spam-like object (from what I have been told by locals only beef and pork are considered meat) floating around. So the whole raw thing def could not be translated.

Does anyone know if I can order what isn’t available here online and have it shipped to me? I can either us my Korean address or Military one.

Please help! I don’t want to be stuck eating wimpy salads for the rest of my time here.

An Nyung hee ga se yo.

I would check amazon for books about raw food and read the reviews. Just about all of them will teach you the basics, you just have to find the one that suits you best. There are lots of websites that sell raw food like www.sunfood.com, just not sure where they ship to. I would definitely scour this website for recipes because the members are from all over the world and there should be ideas for you here with what you have available. Do you have the ever-popular young coconuts there or wonderful fruits? You can eat just about any green raw. I’ve learned to make salads with greens I thought were just for cooking like swiss chard and bok choy.

It takes a while to learn the basics of raw, so no hurry. The fact that you have this site available is a huge benefit!

Have a look at The Complete Book of Raw Food. It’s a pretty good introduction, & seems to cover most of the basics, and has a great range of recipes to try (lots of them with pretty standard ingredients you should even be able to find there).

You might be best trying one of the Australian sites for supplies, like Raw Food Diet Australia. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice guys. I will let you know how it goes!
