Lara Bars!

I have just discovered them and I’m so excited. I don’t own a dehydrator to make delicious concoctions like these, so it’s awesome for me to find a raw snack like this. Are they actually raw? They all taste soooo good. I mean the package does say uncooked, unprocessed. The only ingredients are fruit, nuts and seeds. They’re going to be so great for an occasional treat. Also-I hate dates! But for some reason I love these bars.

  • As far as I’ve ever been able to determine, LaraBars are really raw except for the almonds. And MAYBE the cacao, and MAYBE the seasonings, and MAYBE the coconut, and MAYBE the cashews, etc.

    Also, they are not organic.

That said, I think they’re AWESOME and portable and wonderful and convenient. They’re great for traveling and I always try to have one around in case I’m away from home without proper provisions. They’ve saved me from caving in to french fries about 100 times now!!!

Most of the flavors are not organic, but they do have an organic line as well. And they do use cooked chocolate. I believe I called them a while back to ask. But yes, they are yummy!

Here are a couple links on this website for larabar recipes:

    LOL! :)

they are yummy, but give me an msg type reaction for some reason, which is really really weird

LARABARS have UNSOAKED nuts and seeds and many of them are not RAW. Why are we eating unsoaked nuts now?

  • Jenoz-I don’t eat the ones that contain cocoa, because it’s roasted cocoa, not cacao. I only eat the ones that contain fruit and nuts. Also, there are no seasonings in the ones I have been eating? I know they’re not organic but that’s fine with me, I don’t need to eat organic all the time. I agree, they are so portable and amazing, I just love how they remind me of fruit leather-which I can’t make.

Achin-I didn’t know they had an organic line, I’ll look into that. Thanks for the recipes, they look great!

Chicory-I wonder why you get a strange reaction from them, do you not normally eat nuts? That may be why.

RawKidChef-Not everyone enjoys using soaked nuts and seeds for all recipes. I personally don’t soak all nuts/seeds prior to use, only for certain recipes. Maybe that makes me less raw but that is my personal preference.

Here’s another Larabar topic on GR…

There’s a new peanut one—I’d stay far away from that one.

Well, have you read the Colon Handbook? It states that all unsoaked nuts/seeds are just as toxic as meat.

  • Thanks greenghost! Was it really taken over my general mills? I don’t seem to see anything on the package. Izhpt-The only one I have tried and will stick to is the “Apple Pie”.. it is apples, dates and almonds. RawKidChef-No, I have not read the Colon Handbook. Not soaking every nut and seed is a personal preference. I don’t indulge in nuts that often anyway and I do soak for certain recipes.

  • If you LOVE Lara bars, you can make them for a fraction of the cost. See the above recipes from achin (and there are many more out there). There is absolutely no need to dehydrate these guys. I believe lara bars are not dehydrated?

And you can make them raw :)

  • I used to enjoy lara bars every now and again, but I would always feel weird whenever I’d indulge. So I tried raw revolution’s cashew agave bars (one of the only 100% raw bars they carry) and I get no weird reaction from them, and they taste the best!!! I highly recommend those!

nope…nuts don’t bother me. makes me suspicious

  • Branwyn32Branwyn32 Raw Newbie

I got a coconut larabar the other day, tho I haven’t tried it yet. I’m wary because I really don’t care for dates (see my “dates taste like butt” thread). I tried the cashew spirulina raw revolution bar and ended up throwing 3/4 of it out…I just couldn’t stomach the dateyness.

RawKidChef…why would unsoaked nuts and seeds be toxic? Soaking softens them and frees up some enzymes…but apart from that I don’t see how soaking is chemically altering the nut/seed in any way to change toxins in them. Does that particular book explain?

Personally, I take EVERYTHING I read with varying grains of salt. I very much adhere to “just because it’s in a book doesn’t mean it’s true,” and that goes with raw, vegan, vegetarian, alternative, Eastern medicine and naturopathic experts as well as SAD, Western medicine ones. Maybe it sounds cynical, but I think it’s realistic…most people, in some way or another, are selling something, and I keep that in mind when choosing what advice to follow. If I didn’t eat every single thing anyone ever said not to eat, I’d probably be living off organic local fair trade celery and distilled water. I think we just have to draw some lines in the sand somewhere, but that’s just me.

Either way it’s better than downing a Snickers, and probably Luna or Cliff bars too.

  • chicorychicory Raw Newbie

bleh.. cliff bars are a $1.00 heartburn ticket. Had one once and it was so sickeningly sweet.

  • I’ve know about Larabars since she first came out with them. I thought they were great! And now and again I do have one but they are very very sweet and as they say not much organic or soaked. But sometimes I just have to have one of the cherry pie ones, they are tasty. Ohh and I’ve copied her ingredients before and made my own with soaked notes etc. They were ok.

And ya know what? Sometimes I don’t soak my nuts, sometimes I just eat them, and you know what else, human beings have been eat’n them this way for ever. In fact we started out eating fruit, nuts and seeds before we jumped to meat.

  • I make my own! Check out my recipe!

  • Please forgive me for my ignorance but….when we soak the nuts or seeds for how long do we have to do it? Overnight, 3 hours, 1 day….

    Many thanks in advance.
