Jicama

I’ve a hankering for Jicama. What are the different things I can do with it? This would be my first time going out to get some…. What is Jicama anyway? Is it a vegetable or a fruit? From what nation does it origin in?

  • We sell jicama at my store. It looks like a potato. I think it’s a vegetable. I made some hummus out of it one day that was really good. I still want to try the recipe for jicama fries. Maybe I will go get a jicama today!

Jicama is a legume that looks like a turnip. It grows like a root vegetable. It has a lot of starch. It’s called a yam bean in Mexico, but it also grows in the lower US.

i like to peel mine, cut it in approx. 1 inch slices and then cut it into sticks from there. eat it like you would a carrot stick. it’s sweet and refreshing cuz it has a lot of water in it. make sure it isn’t moldy and it’s very hard.

    enjoy!

  • I like making Jicama fries:
Cut the Jicama (peeled) into sticks
Marinate/toss in good olive oil, salt, and I like cajun seasonings.
I like to make a quick raw ketchup to dip:
Tomato, Apple cider vinegar, and Raisons..blend
Then dip away like fries…goes great with a Sunberger too!!

  • You can chop it up finely in a food processor and mix it with a dash of vinegar and agave to make rice or sushi rice!

  • Shady lady- the funniest thing… i was thinking the exact same thing. how funny…

  • Mmmm, I love Jicama! I peel and slice it into ‘fries’ and eat it with hummus. I also have a wrap recipe that I use it in, which I will be posting soon. We tried making the perogie recipe from RAWvolution cookbook by Matt Amsden, didn’t turn out at all. If anyone can get jicama as thin as he did…please share!
