I've Gone Raw!

The million dollar question for me was, “why didn’t I do this sooner”. Better late then never right? I’ve not only welcomed my 21st year but a new start with this lifestyle.

Anyone on here in Melbourne, Australia? I’m moving from San Francisco to Melbourne in August to live abroad for a while with my best friend and was wondering if there were any fellow raw foodies there? Where do you get your produce, supplements and the like?

Welcome & congratulations! I know what you mean about wondering why I didn’t do this sooner…I sometimes just feel very grateful for the health & financial “problems” (that’s what I thought they were, but it turned out otherwise) that pushed me to this way of life, because I feel better than before the serious health problems started, even though some of them are still on their way out, and the food TASTES amazing, too :) What a blessing!

  • Hi Penelope,

At the moment I live in Germany but I have lived in Melbourne all my life. Melbourne is a fantastic city. It is full of diversity so you wont need to worry about food. I would recommend living on the north side of the city. It would suit this lifestyle more than the south. Google Northcote, Brunswick, fitzroy, carlton. These suburbs line the outer city on the north side. There are heaps of organic grocers to choose from. There are also heaps of farmers markets popping up on the Northside. Queen Vic Market in the city is a must. The produce section is amazing. You will notice when you get there, that there are 2 fresh produce sections. The bigger section is cheaper but in my opinion, the smaller section lining the deli and meat section is fresher and better quality, though a little more expensive. They have 2 or 3 big organic stalls in the smaller produce section. Google Queen Vic to find out about it. Other things to google are ‘ceres’, readings (bookshop), nova cinemas in carlton, Acme, federation square. For cool bars that don’t support the raw lifestyle but are really cool, look up cookie, st jeromes, joes shoes ( hight st northcote), northcote social club, wesley ann, atticus finch, rooftop bar on swanston st. Also, check out threethousand.com.au. This site will give you all the cool nooks and crannies to hang out in. I am so excited that you are moving there. Having lived in Germany for 1 year has made me really appreciate how lucky I was living in such an amazing city. For supplements etc check out Vitaminme. They have 1 or 2 shops in the city and are the cheapest around. For a good natropath check out herbario. they are expensive but amazing…and i’ve tried many. Check out chapel street on the south side. As for raw foodies in Melbourne, check out this site http://rawfood.meetup.com/cities/au/melbourne/?...

I only know of one guy in Melbourne that is raw. I wasn’t raw when I lived there so I am out of the loop there.

please feel free to ask me any other questions regarding Melbourne. oh…for accomodation check out the side window of readings bookshop in Carlton. The entire window is full of ads advertising rooms for rent in sharehouses. It’s updated every week.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

My email is shnicky1@yahoo.com if you would like more help.

  • Me again… Hope you don’t mind but I had a peep at your blog spot. Your pictures are fantastic. The Northside is definitely for you. It’s full of musicians, artists and just crazy fun people. For inspiring artists that are Melbourne based check out www.jackywinter.com. Shops to have a look in are Alice Euphemia, Fat, Order and Caos, PAM, Brunswick street/gertrude street/smith street in general.

    Ahggh..I’m getting homesick.

Good Bookshops are Readings Metropolis Polyester Borders – I don’t normally support big chains but it’s big and is generally cheaper than most. The state library is great. It’s in the city. There are heaps more, I just can’t remember them at the moment.

  • Hi Penelope! I’m an American expat living in Australia too! I’ve been in Adelaide for the past 2 1/2 years, but I’m moving to Melbourne at the end of August. We definitely have to find each other. When will you arrive in Melbourne? I’ll be looking for a place to live and a job as well. And I cannot wait to make some friends who share a similar lifestyle and values. Would be fun to have someone to explore with. I’ll send you a PM with my phone number. Yay raw Australia!
