Interested in RAW FOOD DIET

Hi guys,

I saw a wonderful documentary called Food Matters yesterday, and it has really got me interested in the raw food diet. Currently, i am already eating the paleo diet(give and take a few exceptions) in zone diet proportion.

I would love to go even further and perhaps try out the raw food diet, but i am a male, and have always been a hard gainer in terms of gaining weight and lifting. I was wondering if there are any other guys out there eating the raw diet and still able to gain size while working out and not end up real skinny due to the lack of calories in veggies/fruits in comparison to meat, sweet potatoes, etc?

In addition, i was wondering if anyone could direct me to a few good sources, either books or online web pages where i could learn even more about the diet?

Lastly, I'm a young professional so i dont really have THAT much time to go grocery shopping all that much, right now i pretty much shop for food once every 2 weeks, since i am eating paleo right now and besides vegetables and fruits, the meat usually lasts a while since i could put them in the freezer.. however, I was wondering if anyone is able to grow a lot of food in their apartment? either sprouts or something else?

And how about the dehydrator? The dehydrator is supposed to be able to extract out the moisture and keep all of the nutrients of the food in tact so that they dont lose their potency over time... but how do you actually eat these dehydrated food? I mean i know you can put them in the pot and make soup with them or simply eat them like snacks, but that's pretty much it right? or maybe put them in a blender?

Anyway, I would love to hear about your personal experiences! :D

Hey nyquil! I'm not a guy but I've heard of many guys who maintain weight while on intense fitness regimes.

I only go grocery shopping every two weeks and the fresh foods keep mostly, anything that doesn't keep I eat first. For example, bananas keep for a really long time as well as greens like turnip and collard. Citrus fruits last and so do apples. I eat mangoes, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes a such first as well.

Okay, there are great ways to eat enough calories including keeping high calorie foods like avocados, mangoes, bananas and berries. I buy bags of frozen berries so they last for however long I need them too.

Dehydrating is a way to preserve food and I use it to make things like trail mixes. I slice and dehydrate apples, grapes, cranberries and other berries and put them together with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds with coconut! It helps me get enough calories.

Alrighty now, as far as growing plants, that's fairly easy if you have sun in your apartment. You can grow greens, herbs, and tomatoes and even peppers. I think you could be very successful in that.

Anyway, I hope this all helps! Good luck!

Check out Phillip McCluskey on twitter, he has changed his life tremendously and someone wrote him about a raw athlete to check into, might be of interest to you... Can't remember who he is, sorry... Also check out Chris Carlton on "raw fu", here at goneraw and his site www.purelyraw.com... smile

Google "Richard Blackman" for info from a raw vegan bodybuilder - he's primarily a fruitarian. There are others mentioned here and there on this site. Try searching for "raw athlete" or something along those lines.

On dehydrators...we use ours a lot; breads, crackers, pizza crusts, to name a few. I make flour out of leftover carrot pulp and almond pulp, jalapeno poppers, crepes, coconut meat jerky, eggplant bacon, etc. etc. When you're starting out you don't need to invest in one unless you have an urge to try some of the more "gourmet" recipes. You may be like many others who are satisfied with simpler foods.
