I have some questions

I’ve been hearing that on a raw vegan diet that I need to take b12 supplements but every time I try to take them I pee neon(which tells me my body didn’t need it) and feel ill. Someone also said that in order to get long chain omega 3’s you need krill oil(I personally have ethical as well as health reasons for this diet). And my last question is, next year I want to have a baby and someone said that the raw vegan diet isn’t exactly the best for pregnant women or nursing babies. So can someone with more time raw then me (three months) tell me what’s the truth? Thank you.

I think the truth is very fluid. I take a b12 supplement and my pee isn’t neon and I get my omega 3’s from chia and hemp seeds. Krill oil may be the most bio-available, I don’t know, I have taken it, don’t anymore because the oceans are so messed up as it is, seems less harmful to take some seeds.

Hopefully someone else can help with the baby question since that is a very challenging question. All I know is you don’t want to be detoxing (which is what happens when you transition to raw) while you’re pregnant or nursing because part of your toxic load passes on to your baby. I’m all for raw and breastfeeding, just not sure how it all works together depending on what stage you’re at. Great questions, hope others can help!

  • Thank you for your comment. I love chia and hemp seeds and I know there’s omega 3’s in pumpkin seeds, walnuts as well. How long does detoxing last? I’ve been raw for three months and I think the worst of it is behind me (although I know my body is still trying to find balance).

  • Hey! About the pregnancy, Kristin over at Kristin’s Raw (http://kristensraw.blogspot.com/) is blogging about her pregnancy preparation and doing it all raw vegan. I bet you can find some great info there!

mysticbutterfly, some folks don’t absorb B12 very good through their gut. you can take a sub-lingual type which may absorb better for you.

You don’t have to take krill oil. You can get it from blue green algae which has DHA not just EFA.

I’m still tried to figure out the detoxing myself, a year into it. I had some episodes many months into it and now I’ve been reading a lot of Matt Monarch’s blogs and his book about the need for colon hydrotherapy if you’re raw since you’re always detoxing living such a pure lifestyle in a toxic world. Haven’t tried it yet myself but it definitely has me thinking. You could also read some of Gabriel Cousens books, and he has info online about B12. He’s a raw M.D. and goes into great detail about the science of raw food in his books.

  • Thank you all for the replies. To bitt, what’s sub-lingual?

Mysticbutterfly21~ sublingual is under the tongue…

I am past the baby making stage but if I weren’t, I would not hesistate to be 100% raw and maintain this dietary intake through my pregancy and nursing of my infant as well as start my young one on a raw diet… I believe raw vegan is the healthiest way to eat!!!

B12 is available from some interesting sources, you may be OK depending on the state of your Love Life!! I have been reading about this here: http://goneraw.com/forums/3/topics/6391

  • Hi, I just thought I would mention a site that you might find helpful: http://www.RawMom.com has a lot of information. I’ve been looking up similar information lately, and ran across it.

Also, the book The Raw Detox Diet has some information about pregnancy. It’s been awhile since I have read the book, but I remember there being a chapter or two about it.

I think as long as you are getting the nutrients you need and not giving into wild cravings that you should have a wonderful healthy pregnancy. The logic is simple. You’re healthy, your baby will be healthy. It’s just like if you smoke or drink alcohol during pregnancy. That goes straight to the baby as well. I think it would be amazing to do a raw pregnancy. I definitely plan on doing it when the time is right.

  • Shitake Mushrooms contain vitamin B12… (according to naturalnews.com’s healing food reference page)

Also, I’m not a mother yet, but I’ll definitely be 100% raw vegan throughout my pregnancy… I can’t imagine anything healthier for myself and the baby… broccoli sprouts will be a staple food of mine :)

  • Thanks everyone for all the good info.
