Hosting my 1st Raw Lunch

germin8germin8 Raw Master

Hello everyone,

I have friends that are curious and want to try some raw foods. So, I thought I’d introduce them and make some raw food for them. I will probably serve between 6 and 8 people – this includes the 2 of us. Should I serve several choices or just have a salad, one entree, and dessert? I do not want to make many complicated dishes (because of time). But, I think these are the dishes that I like the most… especially for people who are trying raw foods for the first time. And, I think the more variety there is, the better. I am not trying to have a theme. Any advice?

Here’s what I have in mind: Salad with Cucumber-Sunflower dressing or Avocado dressing. Entrees 1. Onion bread sandwiches with tomato and guacamole. 2. Pad Thai from Raw Food Real World. 3. Zoodles with maranara sauce. 4. Collard green wraps, tomato stuffed with chickenless salad, OR samosas with chutney. Dessert – Blueberry Pie or Coconut Macaroons.

For those who have hosted a dozen people or less… what was your menu like? Any advice for me?

  • Hey germin8, I’ve never hosted a lunch/dinner party, BUT I have a big family, and my mom has always done buffets because they are so easy. They give options to those who are picky eats (like those who don’t eat zuchinni, or are allergic to nuts, etc etc0 and will give these raw curious folks lots of yummy things to try!

There’s no need to get fancy with it, I’d have 2 salads, maybe two simple entrees, fruit, and a dessert or two that’s easy to whip up. If you want to go with the sandwich idea, you can make the bread and have a few options so they can build their own.

The advantage of a buffet style lunch is you won’t have to assemble EVERYTHING, just set out the ingredients, and your guest will take it from there.

    How about some donut holes?

    or this banana pudding?

Good luck with your raw lunch! I’m sure it will go AMAZING! You have some great ideas already (bueberry pie, so yummy!)

Ok, I’m officially hungry now :o)

And let us know how it goes!

For the entrees I would any of those choices except tne onion bread sandwiches – not really an entree. Are you doing all of them or are those choices?

I would pick the pasta or the wraps – but I have never had raw Pad Thai or samosas – could be interesting. Definately the Blueberry Pie for dessert!

One more suggestion, if you do the pasta, is to have two different sauces to choose from. Maybe make an alfredo too.

I would just try to do something that people aren’t so used it being piping hot and they will be weirded out by it. Maybe warm up the items in your dehydrator or warm up the sauces in your blender.

    Wow, thanks for the advice.

The onion bread would be topped with guacamole and tomato slices.

I think I WILL have two salads with two dressings. And, zoodles with a choice of marinara and alfredo. Good idea. I don’t have a blender, just a magic bullet… so it would take time to make a good-size batch. I may skip my number 4 above, with all these sauces.

I like the idea of buffet style. I guess that’s kinda what I was going for with a variety of options.

It’s very likely this will be a picnic raw lunch… so I’ll have to serve everything cool, or hope the hot sun could warm up the food. :o)

I’m experimenting with the blueberry pie right now. It’s a bit “watery” just before I put it in the fridge. Maybe it needed more banana… if it doesn’t work, those donut holes look so EASY!!!! Actually, I may just make the donut holes… you stick everything together and you’re done! It’s fast. The options I had require refrigeration (pie) and dehydration (macaroons).

I am feeling better about doing this…

I’ve never made an alfredo sauce, so I better try one out before serving it. Looking at the donut hole recipe: What exactly is scraped vanilla bean. Can I use vanilla extract?

  • This is so interesting to me! I would love to hear from other people who have tried this. I would recommend a fruit salad. WHo can resist that!? I would recommend the taco meat and taco shells instead of the onion bread. Because it is kind of strong for someone who isn’t used to it. The other thing would be slicing cucumbers and putting little dollops on them as an hordeurve. It could be mock tuna, black olives, or nut cheese and garlic and chives. It sounds like a lot of fun!

I just made some pudding that was awesome. I put a couple of tablespoons of cacao, a banana, and a cup of strawberries. Then pour this over fresh strawberries for dessert. Add a little agave. It tastes soo rich but strawberries only have 50 calories a cup!

W.E. you read my mind! i made a frozen chocolate pie tonight for dinner guests it was two avos, three bananas, agave to taste, two big, heaping tablespoons coca( raw) one whole vanilla bean, two tblsp of coco oil and blended and frozen in a almond, fresh fig, walnut crust…..there is maybe one crumb left floating in the empty dish in the sink!!! no one could beleive it was avo based!!! i put a sliced strawberry on for garnish….mmmm mmmm good! maybe this germin8 for your party! mock tuna is always a fresh, cool fav that can top bread, go on salad or be in a wrap…. easy too!

Chris and I have done a lot of raw food dinners/entertaining. The favourite one for me is our Italian ones. We like to provide a lot of variety and made tons of food.

The last one we did I made:

    Cream of Tomato soup

Pesto pizza with marinated mushrooms – mmmmmmm from Renee Underkoffler “Living Cuisine”

    Onion pate with onion bread

    No bean Hummus

    Rosemary crisps

Blissimo – an Italian stew recipe Chris created.

    Kale salad

    Broccoli salad

    Dehydrated then marinated mushrooms

    Walnut and blackberry cheezecake

Sweet Permission – a heavenly persimmon, banana and strawberry fruit dessert.

It looks like a lot, but the fresh stuff only took a couple of hours to make. It cost

I did it! Plus, I have 2 more raw food lunches lined-up!

I served beanless enchiladas, onion bread with guacamole, pad thai, olive spread with cucumber dressing, blueberry pie, and orange creme pie. The beanless enchiladas and orange creme pie were a hit. I was impressed that my guests and friends knew about raw foods… one was even raw herself! I am surprised how many people I am meeting now that are raw… trying raw… or have tried raw.

I had to wake up at 3:30 AM to get the tortillas out of the dehydrator for the enchiladas… other than that, things went smoothly… and I’m even more prepared for my next ones!
