Horrible allergic reaction

SystemSystem Raw Newbie

Hi guys -

I've recently (in the past week) started making about one litre of hazelnut mylk a day. I soak the hazelnuts overnight then blend and filter them with whole, organic vanilla bean and about 1 1/2 tbsp of agave syrup. Previous to this I had never consumed raw hazelnuts or hazelnut mylk and had never used or tried agave. Four days ago my entire stomach broke out in hives. Thinking it was a rash or a viral infection (which I have been cursed with over the course of my life - part of why I'm now 100% raw) it never even occurred to me that it could be my new mylk so I kept drinking it. The hives got progressively worse and have now spread to my chest, back, upper arms and neck. It's obvious I'm allergic to either agave or hazelnuts but there is no information about agave allergies on the net that I can find and I've read that every hazelnut allergy begins with with a swollen mouth or lips, which I have never had. Is it possible to even be allergic to agave since it's pure fructose? Or is this such a clear case of hazelnut allergy? I have no problems with other nuts such as almonds, cashews, macadamias and walnuts (although I've never eaten enough walnuts to know for sure) but am strangely severely allergic to sunflower sprouts (no hives, just constricted airway :S)

Help! I need insight!

I live in the middle of nowhere and don't have access to an allergist :S Any non-juice suggestions on how to clear my body of these allergens? (Where I live, I can't juice...long story...:)

I'm not a doctor of course, but that sounds more like nut allergy. I would cut hazlenuts out but continue to to use Agave - if the condition doesnt change or worsens (I'd give it maybe a week, less if it worsens) then I would stop using Agave.

I'm allergic to peanuts but for me I struggle to breath so the symptoms are different. I'm ok with all other nuts, it is possible to be allergic to just one kind.

I'd also watch out, skin rashes can often be a reaction from direct skin contact - maybe a change of washing powder, perfumes or non-organic cotton. Has anything like this changed recently.

If not, I would cut out hazlenuts first and then agave.

i would just cut out the mylk and see if you heal up, you want to make sure you figure out what it is youre allergic to. Plus a liter of mylk a day is a lot, you may have not have problems in small amounts.

Terilyn, I don't have a medical background, but checked with 2 friends who do. If you have access to Benedryl, my retired nurse friend suggests starting with 50 mg every 2 hours for 12 hours. If you're not better in 12 hours, she feels you should really seek medical attention. If you are seeing some relief after 12 hours, reduce the Benedryl to 25 mg every 2 hours for 3 or 4 doses, then continue reducing the amount and frequency. Another nurse friend (currently practicing) suggested you might also try an oatmeal bath for some relief.

I did find some web links that indicate a nut allergy can present as a rash / hives instead of the typical mouth, lips presentation. I've emailed one more friend who is a nurse practitioner to see if she has any additional suggestions, given your location. She's not yet responded.

I do hope you get some relief, and quickly. Are you in a situation where you can talk with some local people to see if they have any folk remedy suggestions?

  • Thanks for your comments and advice. I cut out the nuts and the agave entirely and started taking antihistamines, which helped for a bit and then the rash actually worsened :S I emailed my Canadian doctor and he seems to think it's more likely a skin contact problem (the water here is heavily treated for parasites and our clothes are unfortunately washed in industrial machines with god knows how many helpings of bleach) Thanks so much emtpdmom for asking your health practitioner friends - one irritating thing about living out here is lack of easy access to a qualified healthcare professional!

Locals here chalk all health problems here to malaria, not matter what your symptoms are! Silly and strange but true. I'm giving it another week to clear up and then it's off to Nairobi....erRrr... :)

  • the only thing you can do is cut one of them out for a few days & see what happens. if it gets worse or stays as bad but the other out and eat the first thing you cut out. see what happens

  • I have a friend who is allergic to hazelnuts, she breaks out in hives too. Get an allergy test done to confirm. Adult onset allergies are more common then ever. In just the last year I just found out that I have severe environmental allergies to all trees and grasses, lactose allergy, yeast allergy, and I was diagnosed with cat and dog allergies recently (I had cats and dogs as pets my entire 32 years of life). This is my 2 cents!

  • I'd like to add my 2 cents. My son has severe allergies including egg and nut. This is what I've been told or found out.

It definitely sounds like a nut allergy, but you can't be sure unless you are tested. BUT, as we've found out, most times people's allergies get worse the more they are exposed to them-so the more you have consumed the mylk, the worse you may be getting and developing an intolerance to it.

Usually the first line of defense the body offers is to vomit what you're allergic to to try and get it out of your system. Since you didn't do that, it accumulates, and can produce a reaction days later. We've been through both.

My son is deathly allergic to eggs. When they did the 'food challenge' on him, he began with hives on his forehead, then legs and torso-not around the mouth. He also had stridor (difficulty breathing bc his throat was swelling). Since he didn't vomit, it stayed in his system another 4 days (it was done on a Friday and he didn't clear til Tuesday!) Though he did have diarrhea all weekend.

Each time since he's come in contact he's immediately thrown whatever it was back up. Then had hives...etc...

Keep benadryl on hand and when you see your doctor ask for a skin test or RAST test (its a blood test), and an epi pen.

From all my reading, hives usually indicate an allergic reaction.

On a side note-we changed to oat milk. I haven't made it yet, but both of my boys drink it and love it.

  • Terilyn,

I hope your difficulties with Hazelnut milk have settled down. On Saturday afternoon, I had what I thought was food poisoning, but my lips swelled. I realized I also ate some sunflower seed sprouts/greens just before what I thought gave me the food poisoning. I was very ill, threw up and then about 1-2 hours later my upper lip swelled up which had a lot of contact with the sunflower seed sprouts/greens. I'm almost certain this is what I was allergic to, although I have never had a reaction like this before. What was strange was as I was figuring all this out today I was eating sunflower seeds - the swelling was going down on my lip, almost like eating the seeds was doing something to trigger a healing from the allergic reaction to the greens. Bizarre.

Do you know what it is that you reacted to in the sunflower seed sprouts? Do you still eat the seeds, or do you play it safe and avoid them alltogether now?

Thanks for any tips you might have!
