High Cholesterol

Hello,

I am going to try Raw at least one day a week to start to assist with my high cholesterol. I am trying to work up to at least 3-4 days a week. I am truly doing this for my health and not for any other reason. I love meat and other things that are non-raw, but I also love veggies and fruit and pretty much everything. I am excited to lose some weight and feel better and have more energy. I am not comitting to this diet 100% of the time, but I am committing to eating better all the time and Raw part of the time. Is there anyone else out there who has brought their cholesterol down by Raw? Lost weight? I need to bring my cholesterol down about 40 points and I should lose about 20lbs.

Thanks for the support!

    Hi Brooks,

So happy you are trying raw! I have a history of heart disease in my family- even my very skinny, veggie loving dad has high cholesterol. I'm 27, and at a healthy weight and have always eaten tons of fruits & veggies (and almost no meat), so I was shocked to find out last year that I had high cholesterol!

I started the raw diet and my cholesterol did drop. Not drastically- my overall number only dropped a few points, actually, but it was enough to not be in danger. (The not-so-large drop may be because I ate so little animal fat before). However, my ratio between HDL and LDL improved, and my trigylceride levels dropped a LOT after going raw. I also lost 12 lbs in a little over a month, although I gain it back as soon as I start being a little more lenient and eating some cooked food. I have to be at least 90% raw to keep those lbs off.

If I didn't have family history of heart problems and high cholesterol (the doctors said that my body just naturally produces it, even when I eat absolutely no animal fat) I believe that my numbers would have dropped way more. That's why I really don't think you can go wrong with raw. If you look at the American Heart Association's recommended foods for a healthy heart, most of them are what raw foodists eat.

    Best of luck to you!

  • Thank you. My levels are not alarming and they do go down significantly with weight loss and diet, but I just need to feel better and I am scared to take this on, but I think it will be good. Thank you again for you story and support.
